"You’re worse than an animal! I... I’ll kill you!"

Verna Golding was startled for a moment, then she exploded with fury. Like a lioness, she pounced on Storm Xavier, pummeling the beast with both fists. ’How dare he try to harm my son? I’m going to kill this animal!’

"Even a vicious tiger won’t eat its own cubs, but you want to harm your own son! You’re more vicious than any tiger! I’ll kill you first, and if I have to, I’ll pay for it with my own life!"

Verna Golding’s plain face turned ruthless as her hands tightened around Storm Xavier’s neck. She squeezed harder and harder. Storm Xavier’s eyes rolled back in his head, his breathing growing faint. He was filled with regret.

’If I’d known this ugly hag was a psycho, I wouldn’t have said all that to provoke her.’

His vision blackened. At that moment, Storm Xavier desperately hoped the Old Madam and Clayton Xavier would return quickly, but he saw no sign of a savior before he passed out.

Storm Xavier slowly regained consciousness. His vision was blurry and doubled; he thought he had arrived in the underworld. Sorrow welled up inside him. ’I haven’t even seen my son grow up yet!’

Of course, he was referring to Ulysses Spann.

In this scoundrel’s heart, only Ulysses Spann was his true son—the fruit of his love with Phoenix Golding. Clayton Xavier was merely the product of a scheme, and he could not bring himself to like the boy at all.

"Clayton, make him drink some water!"

The Old Madam’s hoarse voice rang out. Storm Xavier shuddered, only then realizing that he wasn’t dead—he was still very much alive. In his joyful surprise, he failed to notice that he was tied securely to the bed, unable to move a muscle.

Clayton Xavier poured a cup of water for him. It was like a welcome rain, soothing Storm Xavier’s parched throat. He looked at his son with a complicated expression, wanting to say something but unable to find the words.

"Did you give the money to Phoenix Golding?" the Old Madam demanded.

A chill crept into Storm Xavier’s heart. He didn’t dare lie to the Old Madam and honestly nodded. Verna Golding was so angry she looked ready to strike him again, but the Old Madam stopped her. The matriarch’s gaze, however, grew colder and colder as she came to a decision.

"Mother, Ulysses is your grandson, too. He carries on the Xavier family line. He’s about to starve to death! Doesn’t your heart ache for him?"

Storm Xavier’s shameless words made Clayton Xavier’s blood boil. He desperately wanted to smash the cup over this man’s head. Forcing down his fury, he grabbed Verna Golding’s hand. ’Mom is the one hurting most right now,’ he thought. ’I have to be her rock, her strongest support.’

Verna Golding gently patted her son’s hand. In truth, she wasn’t hurting at all. She had completely given up on Storm Xavier. Nothing this man did could wound her anymore. She lived only for her son.

"If you were man enough to father him, then be man enough to raise him yourself. That little bastard is your son, not my grandson. My only grandson is Clayton, and he is the only grandson listed in the Xavier family registry."

The Old Madam spoke slowly, word by word. Her voice wasn’t loud, but it filled Storm Xavier with a growing sense of dread. He suddenly recalled a night many years ago when she had dragged him home from a casino. She had spoken to him in the exact same way back then.

She hadn’t seemed angry at all, speaking as if she were just making small talk. But right after, the Old Madam had personally broken his leg. Storm Xavier shuddered and instinctively glanced down at his legs, horrified to realize he was bound tightly. No wonder he ached all over.

"Let me go... Mother... I’ll never do it again! Please, let me go! I’ll go get the money back right now!"

Storm Xavier struggled nonstop, the fear in his heart deepening. He was terrified the Old Madam would break his leg again. He never wanted to experience that pain—a pain worse than death—ever again.

"Don’t trouble yourself!"

The Old Madam sneered, then stuffed a rag into Storm Xavier’s mouth. His shouting was getting on her nerves.
