Chapter 42: Backfire
Lin Su’s ears twitched, and he thought he had heard it wrong. The foolish girl from the Ye family actually spoke such a sentence to him, and the look in her eyes was definitely clear.
After Ye Lingyue delivered the food to Commander Leng and Captain Lin, she went back, reporting to Ye Lingrui smugly.
"Third Brother, I already told Captain Lin about it," she muttered.
The characteristic was just as Ye Lingrui had said. A sickeningly sweet smell which was slightly intoxicating.
For normal people, the faint scent might hold a hint of attraction that made them want to instantly take a bite, but for people with a more enhanced sense of smell like Ye Lingrui and her, it was so sickening that it made them dizzy.
"Alright," Ye Lingrui nodded and handed over the warm roasted quail to her.
She took it and ate with relish.
Ye Lingrui had confiscated their steamed buns and secretly gave them to Yan Luo’s lackeys while Ye Lingyue went to distract him with her presence.
As expected, his resentment and annoyance for not getting a bite of the delicious roasted quail was so high that he didn’t notice Ye Lingrui’s presence among his subordinates.
Since Yan Luo dared to put poison in their food, they should get the taste of it himself. As for Captain Lin, Ye Lingyue had reminded him out of pity and gratitude.
The two captains had some sort of rivalry, and it was also because of them that Yan Luo’s hatred toward Lin Su deepened. He even started to target Lin Su.
Ye Lingyue naturally didn’t want him to suffer from the poisoned food. As for whether he would take advice from a fool like her, it depended on himself.
As the night became deeper, the interrogation on Qiuju was finally concluded.
It was Lin Su who had come to inform them.
"Captain Lin." They all greeted.
Lin Su nodded in acknowledgement and he turned to Ye Chengde. "Mr. Ye, Qiuju has confessed. The reason she kidnapped Ye Shaoqin is because of money."
"The man saw Ye Shaoqin and took a liking to him, even going as far as to risk approaching Qiuju and paying her if she could lead the boy to him."
"Qiuju agreed, and when the other servant, Xiumei wasn’t looking, she brought Ya Shaoqin to the designated place and conducted the transaction there."
As proof, Lin Su held up one tael of silver in his hand and continued. "She wanted to use this money to escape from us."
Ye Chengde’s expression only twitched a little as he listened to Lin Su’s words. The motive was just as he had expected. Otherwise, Qiuju wouldn’t have taken such a great risk.
Meanwhile, Lin Su secretly glanced at Ye Lingyue, who was hugging her knees as she basked in the fireplace’s warmth.
Unexpectedly, the man went to her.
She blinked at him.
Lin Su cleared his throat. "Miss Ye, thank you for the warning."
He did have some doubts when he heard the words from Ye Lingyue’s mouth. Since he didn’t think that it was much of a loss anyway, he tried a small piece for the ants and insects in the ground.
The effect took quite a long time. However, he could see that it was because of that piece of steamed bun he had given that the insects died.
His feelings were really indescribable at that time.
He directly threw the steamed bun away. Seeing Yan Luo occasionally sending gloating smirks to him, he could already guess who the culprit was.
For now, he was investigating whether the imperial guards under him had eaten the same poisoned steamed bun. So far, he hadn’t seen any notable signs from them.
Humans had stronger resistance to poisoned things, so he didn’t know how long until the effect would show up, so he still kept on watching over them.
"You are welcome." Ye Lingyue grinned foolishly.
Lin Su went back to his tent.
Early in the morning, he was surprised to find that some people really had signs of poisoning, but luckily they weren’t his people.

At this moment, Yan Luo’s face was so dark that ink could drip from it. His own people were vomiting and having diarrhea. Undoubtedly, he knew the cause of it.
He took a deep breath as he bristled at them. "Idiot! They would never be as kind as to give you extra food after you have done them! Are you all stupid?!"
Alas, no matter how much he raged at them, it already happened. He ran his fingers through his hair. Alas, he didn’t have any antidote; he wanted the Ye family members and Lin Su to suffer, so why would he keep the antidote?
Now, the decision came back biting him.
"Captain Yan, Commander Leng is calling for you." An imperial guard suddenly went to him and reported.
Yan Luo really wanted to hit the imperial guard right now. He stopped pacing back and forth and glared at him.
Before he could do anything, the imperial guard already sensed something wrong from him and ran away first. "That’s all, excuse me, Captain Yan."
He resisted the urge to punch someone and went to Commander Leng.
"Captain Yan. When we pass by the yamen later, you and your people will deliver that servant there." Commander Leng ordered him.
Yan Luo’s fists clenched by his side, resisting the urge to snap and demanded to Commander Leng not to order him and order Lin Su instead.
In the end, he just took a deep breath and received the order.
Ye Lingyue was watching from a tree branch, giggling happily as she munched on her roasted quail.
She gloated. Serves him right for plotting against her family! She wanted to see how Yan Luo would report his people’s current condition.
It was impossible for him not to report it after all.
