Chapter 5: The Silver Shadow
The library was dead silent. The faint scent of old parchment and beeswax hung heavy in the air, broken only by the cold, oppressive pressure bleeding from Julian’s aura.
An A-Rank Arcane Templar didn’t just have high stats; their mana leaked into the surrounding air like lead weight. A normal F-Rank student would already be sweating, knees trembling under the sheer pressure.
Kael didn’t flinch. He slowly leaned back in his chair, capping his charcoal pencil with a quiet click.
"Causing trouble, Senior Julian?" Kael asked softly, keeping his voice strictly professional. "I sold four legal items to a registered merchant and paid my tuition. If Marcus considers adhering to academy regulations ’causing trouble,’ then perhaps he should re-read the student handbook."
Julian’s gray eyes narrowed, a razor-sharp spark of mana flickering in his irises. "My brother is loud, hot-headed, and arrogant. But he is a noble, and he represents the honor of our house. When an F-Rank scrap picker publicly embarrasses him in front of the Municipal Watch, it reflects poorly on me."
"I didn’t seek Marcus out," Kael said evenly. "He blocked my path with city guards under false accusations of theft. Master Theron cleared the matter. If Marcus feels embarrassed, it’s because his own lie collapsed."
Julian stepped closer, placing two fingers on the edge of Kael’s desk. The wooden surface hissed softly, faint frost forming under Julian’s touch.
"Listen to me carefully, Vance," Julian whispered, his tone dropping into something far colder than anger. "I don’t care about your little ’scrap crafting’ trick. I don’t care how you made a few gold coins in the gutter. But the Green Mist Dungeon trial next week is where real recruits are separated from dead weight."
Julian leaned down until he was at eye level with Kael. "Marcus will lead his own party in that dungeon. If you attempt to sabotage him, or if you bring shame to our house again during the trial... I won’t send guards. I will personally handle your expulsion. Do you understand?"
Kael looked directly into the Arcane Templar’s cold gray eyes. He felt the terrifying difference in raw power—Julian could snap his neck before Kael could even draw a breath.
Power is temporary, Kael thought, his mind crystal clear. Structure is absolute.
"I am going into the dungeon to pass my trial, Senior Julian," Kael said, his voice flat and unyielding. "I have no interest in your brother. As long as he stays out of my way, I won’t have any reason to interact with him."
Julian stared at Kael for a long, heavy moment, searching the boy’s face for any sign of fear or hesitation. Finding none, Julian straightened his silver coat and smoothed his lapel.
"Keep it that way," Julian said softly.
He turned on his heel and walked away, his heavy silver boots making no sound against the carpeted floor.
Kael took a slow, deep breath, feeling the oppressive mana pressure drain from the room. He looked down at his hands—they weren’t shaking.
"Arcane Templar..." Kael muttered, looking at the faint frost on his wooden desk. "A class that relies on pure mana compression. Impressive... but rigid."
He picked his charcoal pencil back up and returned to his schematic. He had four days before the Green Mist Dungeon trial, and he wasn’t going to spend them waiting around.
For the next three days, Kael transformed his tiny shed behind his mother’s house into a high-efficiency scrap lab.
With thirty gold credits remaining after paying his tuition and buying his mother’s medicine, Kael bought raw scrap components that no other crafter wanted: bent copper tubing, burned-out mana regulators, shattered glass lenses, and heavy lead weights from broken fishing nets.
He worked through the nights, sleeping only two hours at a time.
Ding!
[Trash Crafting (Level 1) -> Level 2!]
Mana consumption reduced by 15%. Material compatibility threshold expanded.
By Thursday night, the eve of the dungeon trial, Kael stood in the middle of his dimly lit shed, surrounded by his complete rig.
Mounted on his back was a custom-built frame made from lightweight aluminum scrap and reinforced with woven leather straps. Attached to the frame was a compact, cylinder-shaped furnace powered by a low-grade core fragment. It didn’t melt metal using fire; it used high-frequency mana vibrations to break down structural bonds instantly.
[Item Created: Portable Scrap Processor - Mark I (Uncommon)]
Type: Crafting Rig / Gear Weight: 8 kg Effect: Allows instant field-dismantling of metallic and monster-based waste within a 3-meter radius. Converts raw scrap into purified material blocks at 60% efficiency. Mana Cost: 2 Mana per second of operation.
Next to the processor lay his personal armor: a lightweight coat lined with overlapping, micro-forged Scraptooth Rat scales, giving him defensive stats equivalent to a C-Rank chainmail vest without any of the heavy weight.
And in his hand was his new primary weapon.
[Item: Hybrid Kinetic Cannon-Spear (Uncommon)]
Durability: 60/60 Attack Power: 35 - 45 Effect [Shockwave Thrust]: Channels stored kinetic energy into the spear tip. On hit, unleashes a point-blank kinetic blast dealing 50 Stun Damage and pushing targets back 3 meters.
Kael strapped the processor to his back and hoisted the heavy spear onto his shoulder. The weight was perfectly balanced, distributed evenly across his center of gravity.
He was no longer the weak, defenseless F-Rank who had stepped onto the Awakening Stone a week ago.
The next morning, the grand plaza outside the entrance to the Green Mist Dungeon was packed with hundreds of academy recruits.
Banners waved in the cool morning wind. Party leaders shouted orders, checking their gear, potion belts, and weapons. High-ranking instructors stood on a raised stone platform, holding parchment clipboards to record scores.
"Listen up, recruits!" the Head Instructor’s voice boomed across the plaza, amplified by a wind-rune artifact. "The Green Mist Dungeon is a Tier-1 zone! Your objective is simple: survive for six hours, clear monsters, and bring back monster cores! Points will be awarded based on core grade and quantity!"
In the crowd, Marcus stood at the head of a fully geared four-man party. He wore shining steel armor, flanked by a C-Rank Elementalist and two heavy shield-bearers. He looked around arrogantly, soaking in the admiration of nearby recruits.
"Look at that loser," one of Marcus’s party members snickered, pointing toward the edge of the clearing.
Marcus turned and saw Kael walking toward the queue.
Kael looked bizarre compared to everyone else. He wore a patched coat over a dark scale vest, carrying a strange, heavy mechanical rig on his back and a massive, blunt-looking spear that looked more like an engine pipe than a weapon.
Laughter rippled through the surrounding recruits.
"Is he wearing an engine on his back?"
"What is that weapon? Did he steal a lamppost?"
"An F-Rank actually showed up alone? He’s going to die in the first ten minutes!"
Lyra, who was standing with her alchemy party nearby, looked at Kael with deep concern. She stepped forward. "Kael! Are you really going in alone? The Green Mist is dangerous—the Venom Spiders hunt in packs!"
"I’ll be fine, Lyra," Kael said with a calm, warm smile. "Focus on your team. I have a plan."
Before Lyra could say anything more, a loud horn blasted across the plaza.
BLAAAAAART!
"The barrier is opening! All parties, enter the dungeon!" the instructor shouted.
The massive, swirling green portal at the base of the mountain flashed brightly. Dozens of recruit parties charged forward, weapons drawn, rushing through the portal to claim the best hunting zones.
Marcus passed Kael, casting a sneering glance over his shoulder. "Try not to scream too loudly when the spiders find you, Vance!"
Kael didn’t answer. He waited until the chaotic rush cleared out, then calmly adjusted the straps of his Portable Scrap Processor.
He stepped up to the swirling green mist of the portal, feeling the familiar, cold hum of dungeon mana against his skin.
He stepped inside.
The world shifted. The bright sunlight vanished, replaced by a dim, eerie green gloom. Ancient moss-covered stone walls stretched into the darkness, and the humid air smelled heavily of wet earth and copper.
Ding!
[You have entered: Tier-1 Dungeon - Green Mist Catacombs]
[Warning: Dungeon difficulty scales with party size. Solo status detected. Beast aggression increased by 20%.]
Kael landed lightly on his boots, his hands instantly gripping his spear.
The silence of the catacombs didn’t last long. From the dark tunnels ahead, a metallic screech echoed off the damp walls, followed by the heavy, rhythmic clanking of iron against stone.
Clank. Clank. Clank.
Out of the fog emerged three towering figures. Their flesh had long rotted away, leaving behind glowing green spectral skulls suspended inside ribcages of heavily oxidized, broken plate mail. In their hands, they held rusted longswords.
[Rusty Skeleton Sentinel (Tier-1 Elite)]
Level: 4 Note: Heavy physical armor. Resistant to slashing attacks.
The three skeletons locked their glowing green eyes onto Kael, raising their rusted swords in unison.
Kael didn’t back up. He didn’t draw a spell circle.
Instead, a sharp, cold smile spread across his face as he reached back and flipped the ignition switch on his Portable Scrap Processor.
The cylinder on his back roared to life with a low, hungry hum.
"Come to me," Kael whispered, raising his spear. "Let’s see who dismantles who."
