Year 4 - Month 12 - Day 3 - 0600

[Status: Kael - The Trash God]

[Location: The Trash God Academy - Signal Tower Prime]

[Academy Population: 100,005 (5 former Hollow warriors integrated)]

[Satellite Academies: 20]

[Interdimensional Contact: Confirmed - 3 Species (2 Peaceful, 1 Rehabilitated)]

[Signal Strength: 100% - CARRYING MERCY]

[Era: THE NEW WORLD - PHASE 5]

[Weather: Clear, cold front finally lifted]

[Global Status: SIX SIGNATURES APPROACHING]

[ALERT: MULTIPLE RIFT FORMATIONS DETECTED]

[Count: 6 — Simultaneous]

[Locations: Scattered across 5 continents]

[Behavior: Coordinated, not random]

[Recommendation: This is not six separate visitors. This is one arrival, split six ways.]

The first rift opened above the Academy at exactly 0600. The second opened four seconds later above the Manaus satellite in Brazil. The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth followed within the same eleven-second window, scattered from Mongolia to Nigeria to a fishing village in Iceland that had, until that morning, never expected to matter to anything larger than its own tide charts.

Scrap’s chest display lit up with six simultaneous alerts, and for the first time since the Academy had built its global signal network, every tower on Earth pulsed in unison.

[Scrap: Master. This has never happened before.]

[Scrap: Six rifts. Same moment. Same size. Same signature.]

[Scrap: Whatever is coming, it wanted to arrive everywhere at once.]

Kael stood in the tower’s control room, watching six identical readouts blink in perfect synchrony, and felt the old, familiar tightening in his chest that had nothing to do with the healed Soul Bind scar and everything to do with simple human instinct.

"Coordinated isn’t automatically hostile," Lira said, already pulling on her coat, already thinking three steps ahead the way she always had. "Ilo came alone. Kai-Reth came lost. Keeper came desperate. This is different. This is deliberate."

"Deliberate can still mean careful," Kael said. "Get the six response teams moving. Full protocol. I want witnesses and translators at every site before anything steps through."

[Contact Response Teams: DEPLOYING]

[Team Assignments: Academy Prime (Kael), Manaus (Beatriz), Mongolia (Local Captain), Nigeria (Local Captain), Iceland (Local Captain), Southern Satellite (Mira)]

Six teams. Six rifts. One question hanging over all of them: was this six separate hellos, or one voice speaking through six mouths at once?

Part 1: What Arrived

0615 - Central Plaza

The rift above the Academy widened slowly, almost gently, nothing like the violent tear that had brought Keeper and the corrupted warriors weeks before. What stepped through wasn’t a warrior, or a lost traveler, or a fugitive from a broken war. It was small — smaller even than Ilo — a slight, robed figure with skin like polished driftwood and eyes that seemed to hold entire galleries of slow-moving light.

It did not speak immediately. It simply looked around the plaza, at the students standing in their now-practiced formation, tools raised instead of weapons, and its expression — as much as Scrap’s translation matrix could parse an expression from a face built so differently from a human one — settled into something like recognition.

[TRANSLATION PROTOCOL: ACTIVE]

[TRANSLATION: WE HAVE HEARD YOUR NAME IN SIX LANGUAGES NOW.]

[TRANSLATION: THE CRYSTAL ONES SPEAK OF PATIENCE. THE STARLIGHT ONES SPEAK OF MEMORY. THE BROKEN SOLDIERS SPEAK OF MERCY.]

[TRANSLATION: WE CAME TO SEE WHICH STORY WAS TRUE.]

Kael stepped forward, careful, empty-handed as always.

"They’re all true," he said. "Depends on the day, and who’s asking."

The small figure tilted its head, and across the world in that same instant, five identical figures did the same thing in five different rifts — a single consciousness, Kael realized with a slow chill, distributed and simultaneous, watching through six sets of eyes at once.

[TRANSLATION: WE ARE NOT SIX. WE ARE ONE, SPEAKING FROM SIX PLACES.]

[TRANSLATION: WE WANTED TO SEE IF THE STORY CHANGED DEPENDING ON WHERE WE LOOKED.]

"And did it?" Kael asked.

The figure was quiet for a long moment — six long moments, simultaneously, across six continents, six separate response teams holding their breath in perfect unintended synchrony.

[TRANSLATION: NO. THAT IS WHY WE ARE HERE.]

Part 2: The Test Nobody Announced

0630 - Six Locations Simultaneously

What followed wasn’t a battle, or a negotiation, or even really a conversation in the way the Academy had grown used to. It was, Kael would later describe it to Lira, more like being examined — gently, thoroughly, by something that had learned to be very careful about what it revealed of itself.

At the Manaus satellite, Beatriz’s figure knelt in the dirt of the training yard and began, without prompting, to sketch a simple diagram — the same first lesson every Workshop 0 student learned, the shape of potential hidden inside raw material.

[TRANSLATION (Manaus): SHOW ME WHAT YOU SEE, WHEN YOU LOOK AT SOMETHING BROKEN.]

Beatriz, sixteen and steady in the way four years of the Academy’s ethos had made an entire generation steady, picked up a bent piece of scrap and turned it over in her hands.

"I see what it used to be," she said. "And then I see about six things it could still become, if somebody’s patient enough to try."

In Mongolia, the local captain — a boy named Ganzorig who had been one of the original satellite recruits caught in the leadership dispute Kael had refused to fly out and fix — answered a similar question with his hands instead of words, welding two mismatched pieces of pipe into a working water pump in under four minutes while the small figure watched in silence.

In Nigeria, in Iceland, in every location at once, the same quiet test played out: not a question of strength, or cunning, or power, but a simple, patient inquiry into what each person actually believed about the wreckage in front of them.

[Scrap: Master. I am compiling responses from all six sites.]

[Scrap: The pattern is consistent. Every team answered the same question, in different words, with the same underlying truth.]

[Scrap: They believe broken things can become something more, if given the chance.]

At the Academy itself, Kael’s own figure asked him something slightly different, and it took him a moment to understand why.

[TRANSLATION: THE OTHERS ANSWERED WITH THEIR HANDS. YOU BUILT WITH YOUR HANDS FOR FOUR YEARS. WHAT DO YOU SEE NOW, WHEN YOU LOOK AT SOMETHING BROKEN, THAT YOU DID NOT SEE THEN?]

Kael thought of the scared twelve-year-old who’d handed him a canteen of water on a job site somewhere the story hadn’t bothered to name. He thought of Keeper of the Last Fire, kneeling in the plaza, corrupted and exhausted and asking for nothing but a chance. He thought of the fisherman in Vietnam, welding through grief that never left his eyes.

"When I was seventeen," Kael said slowly, "I saw broken metal and thought about what I could build from it. Now I see broken people — people who’ve been told they’re worthless, or people who did something terrible because something worse happened to them first — and I think the same thing. Not what they are. What they could still become, if somebody stays long enough to help."

The small figure was silent for a long moment. Then, in six places at once, it did something none of the previous visitors had done. It smiled — small, genuine, unmistakably warm despite the alien architecture of its face.

[TRANSLATION: THAT IS THE STORY THAT WAS TRUE.]

Part 3: What the Visitor Revealed

0700 - Central Plaza

[TRANSLATION: WE ARE CALLED, IN THE CLOSEST SOUND YOUR SYSTEM CAN CARRY, THE CHOIR.]

[TRANSLATION: WE DO NOT BUILD WORLDS. WE DO NOT FIGHT FOR THEM. WE WATCH THEM, AND WHEN WE FIND ONE THAT HAS LEARNED SOMETHING WORTH CARRYING FURTHER, WE HELP THAT LESSON TRAVEL.]

Kael frowned slightly, still processing the scale of what stood — sat, existed, distributed six ways across the globe — in front of him.

"Travel where?"

[TRANSLATION: TO THE OTHERS WATCHING. THE SIGNATURES YOUR SCRAP MACHINE HAS COUNTED. THERE ARE MORE THAN TWENTY-TWO NOW. THERE WILL BE MORE STILL.]

[TRANSLATION: MOST WORLDS THAT LEARN TO BUILD, LEARN ALSO TO HOARD WHAT THEY BUILD. THEY CLOSE THEIR DOORS ONCE THEY HAVE ENOUGH. YOU HAVE NOT.]

[TRANSLATION: YOU OPENED TWENTY SCHOOLS INSTEAD OF TWENTY VAULTS. YOU HEALED SOLDIERS INSTEAD OF DESTROYING THEM. THIS IS RARE. THE CHOIR EXISTS TO MAKE SURE RARE THINGS ARE NOT FORGOTTEN.]

Lira, standing at Kael’s side, finally spoke, the question that had been forming behind her careful expression since the moment six rifts opened in perfect unison.

"So what happens now? You’ve seen what you came to see. Do you leave?"

[TRANSLATION: WE HAVE ALREADY BEGUN TO LEAVE.]

As the words translated, the small figures at all six locations began, simultaneously and without fanfare, to dissolve — not violently, not even dramatically, simply fading the way morning fog fades once the sun has finished doing whatever quiet work it came to do.

[TRANSLATION: WE DO NOT CARRY MESSAGES THE WAY ILO DOES, OR MEMORIES THE WAY KAI-RETH’S PEOPLE GROW THEM. WE CARRY THE SHAPE OF WHAT WE FIND. THE SHAPE OF THIS PLACE WILL TRAVEL NOW, TO WORLDS THAT NEED TO SEE IT IS POSSIBLE.]

At the Academy, the last of the six figures turned toward Kael one final time before the dissolution reached its face.

[TRANSLATION: KEEP TEACHING THEM THAT TRASH DOESN’T BREAK. IT WILL MATTER MORE THAN YOU KNOW, TO WORLDS YOU WILL NEVER SEE.]

And then it was gone — all six locations at once, six rifts closing in the same perfect synchrony they’d opened with, leaving behind nothing but six patches of unusually still, golden-tinted air that took the better part of an hour to fade entirely.

Part 4: Day 4-10 — The Ripple

[Signal Signatures: 22 -> 41]

[New Passive Observers: 19]

[Behavior: All new signatures classified as CURIOUS, not threatening]

The number nearly doubled within a week. Scrap tracked each new signature carefully, cross-referencing energy patterns against the twenty-two previous observers, and found something the AI core described, in the closest approximation of wonder its careful logic allowed, as unprecedented.

[Scrap: Master. Several of the new signatures share partial energy signatures with Ilo’s species, and with Kai-Reth’s.]

[Scrap: I believe the Choir was telling the truth. Word of what happened here has already begun crossing between worlds we have never directly touched.]

[Scrap: We may be watched by dozens of civilizations who have only heard of us secondhand, through beings who were themselves only here for days.]

Kael absorbed this slowly, sitting in the war room with Lira, Ren, and Mira, the four of them staring at a map that had, in the space of a single strange morning, quietly become a map of considerably more than one world.

"That’s a lot of pressure," Ren said, breaking the silence in his usual blunt way. "Whole other galaxies deciding whether or not to trust anybody based on whether we keep being... us."

"We were always going to keep being us," Mira said. "That’s not pressure. That’s just Tuesday."

Kael found himself smiling despite the weight of it, the particular, familiar comfort of a team that had learned, across four impossible years, not to flinch from scale.

"So what do we do differently?" Lira asked, ever practical, already anticipating whatever answer he’d give.

"Nothing," Kael said, and meant it. "We keep opening doors, not vaults. We keep healing soldiers instead of collecting enemies. We keep teaching Workshop 0 to twelve-year-olds and Hollow warriors and whoever else shows up needing to learn the first lesson."

He looked around the table at the three people who had built all of this alongside him, from a scared handshake in a burned-out workshop to a global network of schools that had, apparently, become a kind of quiet legend among the stars.

"The Choir didn’t come here to test whether we’d get bigger," he said. "They came to see if we’d stay the same size on the inside, no matter how big we got on the outside. That’s the only thing worth protecting now."

Part 5: Night 10 — What Stayed the Same

[Location: Workshop 0 — Original Site]

[Time: 2200]

That night, Kael found himself back in the old, unchanged workshop — cracked anvil, taped hammer, scorched walls — sitting across from Keeper of the Last Fire, who had taken to spending evenings there, methodically improving on the drone that had crashed nine seconds into its first flight weeks before.

"How’s it flying these days?" Kael asked, settling onto the same overturned crate he’d sat on for four years running.

[TRANSLATION: TWELVE SECONDS NOW. AN IMPROVEMENT.]

[TRANSLATION: THE HUMAN CHILDREN LAUGH LESS AT TWELVE SECONDS.]

"They laughed kindly," Kael said. "There’s a difference. You’ll learn to hear it eventually."

[TRANSLATION: I AM LEARNING MANY THINGS EVENTUALLY.]

They worked in comfortable silence for a while, Kael tightening a loose fitting on Keeper’s drone while the former warrior watched and, occasionally, offered a four-armed hand that made certain tasks considerably easier than they’d ever been for a human alone.

"Do you regret it?" Kael asked eventually. "Staying. Learning to build instead of fight."

Keeper’s masked head tilted, considering the question with the same careful seriousness it brought to every unfamiliar concept.

[TRANSLATION: I REGRET THE YEARS I SPENT HUNGRY AND BROKEN, WAITING FOR SOMETHING THAT NEVER CAME.]

[TRANSLATION: I DO NOT REGRET THIS.]

[TRANSLATION: THIS IS THE FIRST THING I HAVE MADE THAT WAS NOT DESIGNED TO END SOMETHING.]

Kael handed the drone back, its small frame gleaming faintly under the workshop’s single working bulb. "Then that’s the whole point," he said. "Not what you were built for. What you build next."

Outside, the plaza hummed with its usual late-night activity — sparks rising from a hundred forges, human hands and crystalline limbs and bone-plated fingers all learning the same first lesson, all under a sky that now, quietly, held forty-one watching signatures and counting, each one waiting to see whether the story the Choir had carried outward would hold true the next time someone actually knocked.
