Chapter 2: The Logic of Entropy
The air whined as the Scraptooth Rat leaped, its heavy iron-clad body cutting through the gloom of the scrapyard.
Kael didn’t think. Instinct took over. He threw himself to the side, rolling over sharp iron shavings and unexploded mana canisters.
The beast slammed into the pile of scrap where he had been standing a second before, sending a shower of sparks and rusted metal flying into the night air. The impact shook the ground beneath Kael’s boots.
I can’t outrun it, Kael realized instantly, his breath coming in ragged gasps. The exit gate is locked. The walls are twenty feet of smooth reinforced concrete. It’s just me and this thing.
The giant rat spun around, its iron-sharded tail whipping through the air and slicing cleanly through a wooden support beam nearby. It let out a high-pitched screech, its red eyes glowing with feral hunger.
Kael backed up slowly, his mind racing. His hand tightened around his newly created tool—the Scrap Kinetic Striker.
One attack. The durability is only 15. If I miss, or if it doesn’t break through its armor, I’m dead.
The beast crouched, its powerful hind legs flexing as it prepared for a second pounce.
Kael forced his heart rate down. He had spent five years studying monster anatomy at the academy, even when he couldn’t afford the tuition for combat modules. Scraptooth Rats weren’t born with iron spines; they ingested scrap metal to form an external armor plating over their hides.
Which meant their armor was held together by the same chaotic, unrefined mana that Kael had just learned to manipulate.
It’s not just armor, Kael realized, a cold spark of clarity washing over him. It’s a pile of moving trash.
The rat sprang forward, faster this time, aiming straight for Kael’s chest with its razor-sharp claws extended.
Instead of dodging, Kael stepped into the attack.
He waited until the last possible fraction of a second, feeling the wind from the beast’s leap brush against his face. He extended his hand, pointing the rusty nozzle of the Scrap Kinetic Striker directly at the creature’s chest plate—the central node where its ingested metal fused together.
"Transfer," Kael gritted through his teeth, dumping his remaining 25 points of Mana straight into the weapon’s core.
BANG!
A violent wave of compressed air and kinetic force exploded from the crude device. The recoil smashed Kael backward, knocking him onto his spine and sending his weapon shattering into a dozen useless fragments.
The Kinetic Striker was destroyed.
But the shockwave didn’t just hit the rat; it resonated with the unstable mana inside the monster’s rusted armor.
A chain reaction of micro-explosions detonated across the beast’s chest. The plates of iron plating buckled and cracked inward, driving its own rusted armor deep into its ribs. The monster let out an agonizing shriek and crashed heavily onto the dirt, skidding to a halt mere inches from Kael’s boots.
It twitched once, twice, and then lay still. A thick pool of dark black blood expanded beneath its chest.

Kael lay on the ground, staring at the translucent blue panels floating in the air. His lungs burned, his shoulder throbbed from the recoil, but he was alive.
He slowly pushed himself up, resting his back against a mound of scrap metal. A breathless laugh escaped his lips.
"Two levels," he whispered. "In one night."
Most students in his class spent weeks in organized dungeon parties just to reach Level 3. He had done it alone, in a junkyard, with three pieces of garbage.
He immediately opened his stat interface. Without hesitation, he allocated 6 points into Intelligence and 4 points into Willpower. As an Artisan, his power wasn’t in raw physical strength; it was in his mana pool and his ability to process complex structural logic.
[Stats Updated]
Intelligence: 12 -> 18 Willpower: 14 -> 18 Max Mana: 30 -> 75
The moment the points were assigned, a wave of cool clarity swept through Kael’s mind. The mental fatigue from draining his mana vanished, replaced by a sharp, crystal-clear focus.
He looked down at the dead Scraptooth Rat and activated his new skill.

Targeting object: Tier-1 Scraptooth Rat (Deceased). Extracting viable components...
A faint grey haze swept over the monster’s corpse. The rusted iron scales covering its hide detached smoothly, falling into a neat pile at Kael’s feet. The serrated fangs slipped free from its jaws, along with a tiny, glowing sliver of a monster core located in its skull.
[Materials Extracted:]
High-Density Rusted Iron Scales x 12 (Quality: Unrefined) Serrated Iron Fangs x 2 (Quality: Sharp) Low-Grade Beast Core Fragment x 1 (Quality: Fragmented)
Kael picked up the Beast Core Fragment. It was small, no bigger than a pea, flickering with a faint red light. Normally, a fragment like this was sold to alchemists for a paltry two credits because it was too unstable for standard enchanting.
"Unstable," Kael murmured, a sharp smile touching his lips. "Perfect."
He looked around Sector 4. The yard was quiet now. The moon was high in the night sky, casting cold silver light over acres of discarded history.
He had forty-eight hours until the academy tuition deadline. He needed fifty gold credits—an impossible sum for a commoner student, let alone an F-Rank scrap collector.
He grabbed the iron scales, the fangs, and the shattered pieces of copper wire lying nearby.
"If one trash item can defeat a Tier-1 monster," Kael said to the empty yard, his voice filled with a quiet, dangerous resolve, "let’s see what I can build to buy my freedom."
He sat down in the dirt, pooled his newly expanded mana into his hands, and began to craft.
To Be Continued...
