Lesson 29: Escort

The day after the confrontation with Bishop Azaro.

Ray and Ashley got up pretty early than usual and headed to a merchant's store called Orville because of a escort request they had accepted yesterday.

In front of Orville's shop were mercenaries who had already been requested.

Four men and women, two human men with two beasts - a wolf or a dog system - sit and wait for the carriage to be ready. A man in his mid-twenties rose up, seen in it as a leader.

The man - Roche - was an archer dressed in leather armor and equipped with a long bow, and he came out with his right hand laughing when he saw Ashley.

"Will Ashley come in this time too? Nice to meet you. What about you?

"Nice to meet you. This guy is Ray, mine... with him. I'm sure of my arms, but I don't have any experience with escorts. I may annoy you, but thank you."

She looks slightly hazy and bows her head as she introduces Ray.

Roche remembered who Ray was to that attitude of Ashley.

"This is the guy, that (...) Ray. I've heard of Takeshi."

He smiles a little mean and offers Ray his right hand.

"Nice to meet you," Ray said, bowing his head and shaking his hand, thinking about his words.

(Takeo tell me, are you talking about Theron? No, I guess it's about Ash. That face...)

The other three, Hugo, a human man about the same age as Roche - equipped with a long sword and shield in metal armor - are introduced to two beastly women, Vieri and Cardina.

Oogo was a six-grade mercenary, often combined with Roche, a silent man.

Vieri is a dog beast who looks about the same age as Ashley in her mid-twenties, with a dagger and a throwing sword on her hips in leather armor. The dripping ears of the retriever system peek out of his hair and his thick tail is shaking. She is also a Class VI mercenary, working primarily as a scout.

Cardina, like Vieri, is a dog beast man, equipped with short spears and daggers in leather armor. She is about the same age as Vieri and looks very similar. Ray found out later that they were sisters.

The escorts also met each other face-to-face, and the two went to see their client, the merchant Orville.

Orville has an impressive burnt face on a mid-thirties day, a human man who feels more like a warm looking farmer than a merchant.

After a brief greeting, the escorts cross the horse prepared by Orville. Orville, who confirms that everyone has ridden, gives a signal to leave.

Around 6: 30 a.m., they left the city of Morton.

Two people, Vieri and Cardina, took the lead. Two people, Roche and Ugo, followed the palace, and Ray and Ashley were handed out between the first and second carriages.

The best of the six is Ashley, but she seems to have been handed out to the most responsive central area to combine with Ray, who has no experience of escorts.

Head east on the street and arrive at the village of Rattley, where he made his first request, the Lizardman Crusade, in about two hours.

Take a short pause here and continue down the street again, the road slowly changes direction to the south.

After about three hours we arrived at the village of Linney, a small village on the hill.

"We'll have lunch here. The escort will take turns and follow the wagon. Take care of the horses before you go to dinner."

Orville's instructions fly.

Roche split the break into two squads, with Ray and Ashley in the same squad as Roche.

The three decided to eat first and went into the village inn and dining room.

"This place has good pork dishes. It's a little expensive, but since we're camping tonight, you'd better keep some good food here."

Listen to Roche's advice and Ray asks for pork dishes like pork sautéed.

The dish that comes out is a thickly chopped pork rose meat hung with a slightly sweeter, habitual sauce, eaten with bread - a bread that smells like black bread.

The freshwater fish dish is the specialty lax, but the taste of the meat dish was satisfactory enough.

After eating the food, Ray speaks to Roche.

"Mr. Roche, it was really good"

Roche stretched his chest as he was praised and said, "I guess so. When you get here, you're bound to eat," he said, then put what he cared about straight in his mouth.

"Can't you handle that way of talking? Don't be tough."

Ray, after apologizing, "Excuse me,"

"I'm going to be talking normally..."

"Fair enough. I just thought if we were going to be mercenaries, we might as well have a little more smashed tone. That's what Ashley would think, right?

Roche didn't seem to care so much either, it just seemed like Ray wouldn't float on this member or was just worried.

Ashley nodded, "Oh, yeah."

"It's like Ray grew up in a normal place talking like this. I don't remember, so I don't know."

Roche said he heard something, but because not prying into the past is a mercenary of manners, he said, "Well. Well, never mind," I just said, not asking any more, especially.

Ashley laughed as if she remembered something,

"But you better watch out for Ray. He suddenly has a tongue."

Ray blushed in embarrassment and Roche, who knew he had accused Bishop Azaro of Light Divinity, was laughing out of the gap between the story and the current modus operandi.

Get out of the dining room and take turns with the Oogos.

The weather is beautiful and we will take care of the horses with a soft breeze in late April.

After an hour or so of rest, he left the village of Linney.

We will also make a small pause in the village of Baluster around 3 p.m., further south down the street.

The streets gradually enter the deep woods, and the light of the leaning day gradually ceases to reach the surface.

Around 6 p.m., we arrived at the desired camp.

The sun was about to fall, dim in the woods, but the meadows, about fifty meters in diameter, were not yet completely engulfed in darkness.

The merchants get out of the carriage and start preparing for the camp.

One of your men removes his horse and takes him to a creek, which is a water field. Others will be handy in preparing for the fire, etc.

The mercenaries are also sisters of Vieri and Cardina out to scourge, Roche escorts the merchants, and Ugo takes care of the horses with his lord.

Even if Ray doesn't have any clear instructions in particular, he falls in love with the way he handily goes about his work, but doesn't know what he can do and sees Ashley better.

"What should we do?

"Right. You picked up firewood and pumped water. If you say a word to Roche, we're going into the woods."

Tell Roche about it and go into the dimmed woods.

The woods were mixed with birchy trees and woodlike trees, and many branches of firewood trees had fallen.

But I'm not sure which branches Ray would like.

"What should I pick up?

"Don't you know? Well... you said you lived an easy life where fire could easily be used with something like" gas "... sorry, forgot... something that looks dry and hard and heavy burns for a long time. Light ones can be used for the first incineration, so it doesn't matter if there is some. Anyway, pick something that's not as wet as possible."

"No, it's good. But I also want you to tell me what you think anyone knows. Of course, if you don't know, I'll listen to it from here."

They picked up firewood for about twenty minutes, secured a sufficient amount and returned to the camp.

The area was completely dark and the magic props of the lights were mounted on carriages and so on to ensure brightness.

"Is it okay to turn on the lights? Can't you get a demon or something?

"I'm fine. Or even in the dark, nosy demons come by. Whatever subhuman can fight in the dark, we humans can't fight in the dark. Then it's safer to keep the blind spots as bright as possible."

"I see," he nodded, convinced. And I left the firewood I had by the burning fire.

And he held a bucket like a bucket and went to the dark creek to draw water.

When the camp was ready, Roche gave me an explanation for the night security.

"I'll wake up tomorrow at 5: 00 a.m. and leave at 6: 00. In sleepless order, but first Ashley and Ray, then me and Ugo, and finally Vieri and Cardina. Any questions?

No one asked me any questions.

The merchants finish preparing their supper, and soup with meat and hard bread are handed out.

Though the meat soup is slightly salty as it is, if you tear the bread and eat it, it will taste just right for your tired body on the move.

By the time I had finished eating and cleaning up, the evening had changed considerably.

The merchants dive into the wagon stand and the wagon, and soon they hear snoring.

The Roches also lay in capes, slightly away from the burning fire.

Ray questioned the behavior and whispered not to be annoyed,

"Why aren't you sleeping near the bonfire? Even though it's warmer here."

"With the magic props of the lights we can see round. What happens if a bandit hits you who can attack you with a bow or magic? If it was solidified in one place, it could be wiped out at once. It's the same thing that the merchants do to the wagons. Whatever the magic is, the arrows can prevent it."

"Well... you have a lot going on. By the way, why would you leave the bonfire on? I have the lights, and I think I should put them on again tomorrow morning."

"One is because there are beasts who fear fire. The other is for the sleepless turn to take the warmth. The real reason is to make sure the sleepless number isn't asleep."

"Yeah? What do you mean?

"Fire goes out if you don't get firewood regularly. If the fire was out, it would be proof that the sleepless number had fallen asleep. That's what I mean."

Ray listens to Ashley with admiration.

She also enjoys explaining to him that she asks as intriguing as a child, and it quickly became time for a change. Time does not have the tools to measure - demonic items similar to clocks exist, but they are expensive and tense - so they measure time with the movement of the stars.

By the way, the moon also exists in this Trinitus. As full as the moon of the earth, it becomes full again from the full moon in a thirty day cycle, that is, in a month.

The two woke up Roche and Ugo, took turns sleeping and wrapped themselves in a cape.

Ray was excited about his first wild boarding house, and he didn't sleep very well. I was looking up at that clear starry sky.

(Beautiful starry sky. Sounds like the starry sky I saw in Planetarium when I was in elementary school... the constellations I know... there are no North Fighter Seven or Orion... you really are a different world...)

Blurry I was thinking about that, but the tiredness of being rocked by a horse for nearly ten hours lured him to sleep.

The next morning, I'm woken up by Vieri, who was on a sleepless turn.

The area was like a little before dawn, and it was brighter, but because of its proximity to the woods, the mornings were standing in.

Ray went to the creek rubbing his sleepy eyes, washing his face, and then went to the woods to add something for him.

In the woods, too, there is a sight of only about twenty meters.

Clear, cold air is pleasant.

Back at the camp, breakfast preparations had already begun.

The breakfast was the same as yesterday's soup and seemed to use dried meat for the soup.

As I was eating breakfast, suddenly, from afar, I heard the roar of the beast, the howling of a wolf called "Warn, Warn".

The mercenaries of the escort hear the wolf howl and stand in unison.

And then he looks around with his weapon in his hand so that he's alert to his surroundings.

"Wolf, a forest wolf around here... that's awkward. No, you didn't get attacked at night... but I've never heard of a forest wolf leaving here at this time of year..."

Ashley is whining to herself.

"Mori Wolf? How dangerous is that?

"Depending on the number, they usually strike at about fifteen to twenty heads. It's just a beast, but a smart, nasty enemy."

The forest wolf is about 1 and 5 m long and is one turn smaller than the gray wolf classified as a demon.

Sharp fangs are the biggest weapon, and if it's about human arms, it's easy to eat a thousand slices. He also attacks the escort, waits for the main unit to escape, and then shows what he doesn't think of as a beast, such as aiming horses and making fallen people.

Roche gives Orville instructions as he sets up his long bow.

"Get a horse in the carriage right away. It is troublesome when attacked in the streets, so intercept on this occasion. Be careful not to let the horses break out!

And I'll give instructions to the escorts, too.

"Cardina and Ray will escort Mr. Orville and the others. Vieri, check on the wolves. Hugo and Ashley need to intercept between the carriage and the wolf."

Vieri runs toward the wolf's squeal, but soon the wolves emerge from the woods, and she returns to the carriage.

There are about twenty wolves who show up, roaring with glue, slowly approaching as they lower their gray-hung brown bodies.

The distance from the wolves is about thirty meters.

Hugo and Ashley leave the carriage about ten meters ago and are in a position to intercept.

The horses panicked at the appearance of the wolves and began to rumble, but they were holding back the merchants from running out desperately.
