Lesson 32: The Merchant Corps

The next morning, Ray and Ashley went to the Mercenary and Adventurer guilds and were looking for a request to return to Morton from Rezam.

But neither the Mercenary Guild nor the Adventurer's Guild met the criteria, and the two of them were consulting to escort Orville, who had escorted them to, or to go straight back to Morton without a request.

Ray said, "You're not surprised. What do we do?" Asked Ashley, as she also had trouble deciding what to do.

"Right. If we don't have to hurry, I think we should escort Lord Orville home..."

Ray can afford it financially,

(Now I have roughly 13,000 C (krona), about 13 million yen, and about twenty of those gold coins I've had since the beginning. It's closer to a big five hundred C gold coin than a hundred C gold coin, so this alone could be about 10,000 C. Then maybe you can relax and go home... but you said you don't even know this gold coin, Ash, so I guess you can only use it in an emergency...)

"Mr. Orville won't be camping on his way home, either. Then you might want to go home in a relaxing travel mood."

Ashley also rode Ray's suggestion because she could afford it financially. Speaking to the Roches, he left the city of Rezam after 9 a.m.

It was a slightly late hour to leave, but the destination breemer is about thirty km. It's a long way for the two riders to travel in a faraway mood.

The weather is good, and the forest that was so bothered yesterday, as usual, is quiet and the two of them are so relaxed that they seem to have a nose song, they go down the street.

Between Rezam and Breemer, both sides of the road are pasture, followed by loose hills where sheep and cattle are herded. It was less dangerous than in the woods to go down the streets surrounded by its pastoral hills.

Taking a meal in a small settlement along the way, he goes ahead with his horse relaxing.

Nothing happened, we arrived at Breemer village at about 4 p.m.

However, the village had a murderous atmosphere compared to yesterday's passing.

I wonder what Ray and Ashley are about, but I don't see anyone who might be able to ask what's going on.

When he entered the inn and dining room, there were many merchants and their escorts.

Ashley finds a mercenary she knows and asks what happened.

The mercenary's story was that the merchants here were to form a merchant corps tomorrow morning because there would be more demons than usual in the woods between Breemer and Baluster.

There were only three lodgings, and I went around all three, but everything was full.

Ray told veteran Ashley, "What do you do when you're like this?" I ask.

"Do you want me to give you a room, let you stay in a private house somewhere, or rent a cabin like a barn... if it's this weather season, it sucks, there's a hand called Nojuku"

"It's best if you give up your room. Who is the least escorted merchant in all this?

Ray seems to have come up with something, looking around the cafeteria with Kyoro Kyoro.

Ashley didn't know what he was thinking and said, "What are you going to do?" I hear.

"Oh, I was hoping to get us added to tomorrow's merchant convoy escort. The reward is accommodation for two people. Anyway, I was going to head to Baluster tomorrow, so while I was escorting him, I didn't have a problem with it, and on the contrary, I thought it would be safer to have a larger number of people... weird?

"No, it's no problem. Then I'll negotiate. I'm a better mercenary than you, and the name goes by somewhat."

Ashley said so and walked towards the merchants.

Talking to a few merchants, I found a merchant who was alone but gave up one room and would also cover the cost of food.

The two undertook escorts on that condition.

By dinner time, there were even more people.

Apparently, early in the day, the group that left Rezam yesterday and headed from Breemer to Balaster today, and the group that was about to go from Rezam to Balaster all at once, turned back along the way.

That was more than double the usual number of people because of the addition of merchants who had left Rezam today.

For this reason, the capacity of the village inn was far exceeded, even the meal lacked enough chairs in the dining room, and some stood at the counter.

The two were relieved that they were able to secure the room early.

"If it was a little late, we might not have been able to negotiate. I was lucky."

They were supposed to sleep, hugging each other to a narrow bed with only one.

"If you sleep like this even if you have two sleeping quarters, maybe a silver bell pavilion would be a good room for one. Don't you think so, Ray?

He couldn't tell if Ashley was joking or serious, laughing vaguely, but he immediately asked for her, and that didn't even stay in the corner of his consciousness.

The next morning, with the sound of the merchants preparing to leave, the two woke up before dawn.

Ashley was rubbing her sleepy eyes and figuring out why she would be ready to leave so early. Though the mountain path along the way is steep to Baluster, it is only 25 km away.

In order to be alert to demonic raids, if you want to form a merchant squad, you don't need to start preparing early in the morning.

"Why are you getting ready so fast? No, you should hurry up and get ready anyway."

Ashley starts getting ready early, saying she should get ready soon, too, to check the situation. Ray, who was still falling asleep, also rushes into preparation for the word.

Gearing up, he headed to the dining room, where a large number of merchants, escorts, were eating.

They both eat meals and start gathering information about this rushed situation.

to a merchant in his thirties sitting at the same table,

"We were suddenly set to escort, but I haven't heard that we're leaving this early. If you know what's going on, why don't you tell me?

"I got a message from a commercial guild late last night. As soon as Rezam's defense team arrives, the streets between this village of Breemer and Baluster will be sealed off. They say Rezam and Morton's defense teams hunt mountains jointly because anything is a bandit group or something roaming around here. So we're going to head for the roster before the defense arrives."

"Are you okay? There are enough bandits for the defense to hunt out jointly!

Ray is surprised, he hears that,

"They're a group of about fifty people for everything, but there are more than thirty escorts over here, too. Few bandits should come to this many escorts. Normally, I'd go for a less escorted merchant."

Ray decided to ask Ashley's opinion, though not to be blatant.

"What do you think of Ash?

"Right. I feel dangerous, but with all the merchants' generosity, I'd have to go. I signed up to get a room here yesterday."

After they were ready, they pulled their horses and headed towards the village square, which is the meeting point.

In the dim square were mercenaries of more than twenty carriages and more than thirty escorts.

The mercenaries had gathered in one place to discuss how to escort them.

A man with a veteran-like long sword hanging from his waist was partitioning the field.

"Guys, listen up! I'm Gad of Rezam, Gad Fink of the fourth level! You've heard of the Clients forcing them to travel to Baluster. I only know the number of escorts, thirty-six. If someone has to hit the head, don't know! I'll divide it up for now, but whoever has a complaint, just say it here!

A man named Gad looks around, but he didn't speak up from anyone.

"Okay! Well, I'm sorry, but I'm the captain until Baluster! The total number of carriages is twenty-five. If we line it all up, we'll be in a big queue of about 200 meters. So team up every five cars. You must have already decided on a team on the merchant side. Basically, it's going to be on my client's wagon, but I need you to decide on a leader for each team! It's gonna take a while, so I need someone with a high” grade ”and” level ”on their head! You got it! Then come to me when you've decided on a leader."

Ray and Ashley head to the merchant they escort. They joined the two groups, and Ashley became a leader in the fifth level, meaning Swordsman Level 42.

Ashley went to Gadd's and Ray was looking around at the two sets of escorts.

(Including me and Ash, eight or... it hurts that the swordsman has three out of five and no archers... two of the swordsmen are about the same age as me. I don't know how much you can use it, but you'll have some experience in action...)

When I go to greet the six of them, I find that they are all mercenaries belonging to the guild of Rezam, a fairly young composition of personnel who said they were in their late teens and mid twenties.

(No veterans. Ash is the best veteran... but why are you so young? It's weird what I say...)

Ashley came back about enough.

"Guys, listen up! Tell them what you've decided for now. Fit the speed to the slowest legged carriage after departure. With that guy at the beginning, he doesn't need to worry about it, but he doesn't want it cleared up, so he wants his escort to be a preacher and adjust his speed. Then there's the response when bandits and demons come out."

I hear bandits, demons, and everyone's gaze gets tough.

"Look at the number of enemies and get reinforcements out of the front and rear squads. Basically, it's a policy to respond with three squad escorts. When I give the signal, I want you to turn to backup. But deep pursuit is strictly prohibited."

Everyone nods and makes a final check, "Anything you don't have a horse".

Two beasts raised their hands.

The two are tiger or bobcat beasts, and they look just like each other, are they twins?

"You two get in the carriage. Ask for reinforcements, but the carriage keeps going. Once you're done, you have to run to catch up. Problem?"

The two beasts never even look at each other and nod silently.

"Then me and Ray will take the lead, the two beasts get in the fourth and fifth carriage. The others will have two in level six at the end, and two in level seven between the third and fourth."

At Ashley's behest, the six mercenaries head to their respective quarters.

(I knew you were used to it, Ash. Nevertheless, don't change your impression of mercenaries. I thought at the training ground, even when I say mercenary, I'm really a soldier. I'll do proper training, and I'll stick to orders. Thanks. I think the mercenary image of the story is too strong...)

With that in mind, Ashley yells at me.

"Ray, don't guzzle me. It's just you, you're not riding!

Ray apologizes, "I'm sorry," across the horse with a glimpse, and lines up next to Ashley.

(In the bed of the Rezam Inn, there's no shadow at all. You really are a soldier)

All ready, in the dawn, twenty-five merchants left the village of Breemer.

The streets from Breemer to Baluster are on the way and will continue into the deep woods.

As soon as you leave the village, you go uphill and into the deep woods, the morning sun plugs through the trees and the fresh green leaves gleam.

The temperature was still low and the horses' exhaling breath was blowing up like white smoke.

Ray said, "Ash, can I ask you something?," he said, approaching her horse.

Ashley said, "What?" and look at him wonderfully.

"Do you think the Bandits are coming out? Besides, yesterday, you said there were a lot of demons, but what does that have to do with that bandit group?

"I don't know. If as many as fifty armed groups go into the woods, demons and beasts often go into unusual behavior. As the Knights and Defenders enter the woods in training, the demons similarly shrug. It's a similar story this time."

"Maybe it was the impact of our attack on the forest wolf yesterday?

I thought about it a little bit, Ashley.

"That's a possible story. I need to talk about something more disturbing... a bandit group or why that armed group is here. This street is the main street from Rauls, king capital of Sartooth, to Fonce, king capital of Lax. But this neighborhood is a rugged forest, and the village is just along the street. I mean, it's unsuitable land for lurking. A large band of bandits should make it easier to operate on land closer to Fonce..."

As a soldier, she had doubts about the actions of armed groups. Ray, an amateur, doesn't really know what she's talking about.

"You came over here or something because you're on strict alert when you're close to Fonce?

"That's not true. Sure, vigilance gets tough, but you can't be vigilant about everything on the street. Though the forest isn't deeper than here either, it's a dangerous enough forest. Besides, there are small villages dotted in the woods, with many side streets. If there's a lot of people, it should be easier to work with more than just one street like here, and the rest is a beast road."

"When you do, you mean you're unlikely to attack this merchant squad?

"I don't know. It changes depending on how distressed they are. Normally, I don't suppose there will be any attacks..."

Ray lurked his voice slightly here,

"By the way, you think you can count on the same squad escort?

Ashley, after a little thought,

"Honestly, me and Ray, the last two can guess. I don't think the other four should count on much. Well, the battles are numbered. If there were soldiers with weapons, that would be the only deterrent. I can only hope for that..."

After Ray thought, "I knew I was thinking that.”

"Okay. Ash, I'm counting on you. 'Cause I'll definitely protect you and show you."

Ashley opens her eyes to the words and her face turns bright red.

"Wow, okay. Let me guess, let me guess. I'll do everything I can to protect you, too."

The forest gradually deepened and they both became more vigilant.
