Lesson 26: The Watchman

December 1st.

Raspade and Ginny set out for Periclitle.

Even if things go well, they only come back as early as ten days later because it takes about four days each way.

After discussing the future with Ashley and Stella last night, we were to wait in this city until the Raspades returned.

In that discussion, Ashley said, "You really don't have to go to Periclitle. Me and Stella are most afraid you'll regret it," he cares.

Ray smiled slightly stifled,

"To be honest, I'm not sure. I'm sure we should go, but I also feel like something is going to happen with me going... and I may regret it, but I think this is the best I can do right now."

Ashley and Stella gave a slight relief look.

Afterwards, I stopped running errands to go to the School of Magic, so I discussed with Ashley and the others what to do with the last ten days, waiting for the Raspades.

"I don't have a Dr. Raspade, and the research in the library isn't going to be very fruitful, and my body is going to be dull just for morning and evening workouts, so I'm thinking I'll take it for a request to crusade demons around here too... what do you think?

Ashley said, "Right. My body does blunt. I agree," he nodded loudly, and Stella smiled and nodded, "I agree, too.

After dropping off Raspade and Ginny, he headed to the new town to visit the Adventurers Guild.

Every day, when I return to the old town, I collect the Entrance Tax II C (Krona), so I also decide to change my accommodation, pack my bags and enter the new town.

Ray crouched through the gates of the Old Town as he spoke to his horse, who was in a bad mood for lack of exercise.

The Adventurer Guild is on the western side of the new town, in a wooden three-story building around nine in the morning, but people came and went relatively often.

Once inside, it was slightly bigger than the Morton branch I used to go before, and all the reception counters in about ten locations were filled with adventurers.

(Morton said there were fewer people at 8: 00 a.m., but is activity starting late here? Or are there a lot of them? Is there not enough counters then? Can you get out slowly with lots of nearby fields, or is it too far away to always be camping...)

The three will go to the reception counter and complete their registration with the branch.

Ashley speaks to the young lady at the reception.

"This is the first time I've been asked to do this here, but I need you to let me know what's going on around here"

"Okay. Requests here in Doctus will be mostly crusaded and collected in the Saeum Mountains in the north. The Saeum Mountains are uninhabited with most villages burned in past wars. As a result, many demons appear…"

According to the receptionist, the pioneering village that was within the Saeum Mountains was devastated because of the war between the Caerm Empire and the Kingdom of Lax. Many demons live on behalf of people because of their influence, and demons sometimes descend near the main street, Aurelia Street.

For this reason, there were few specific requests for crusades, and constant requests for crusades had been made to demons coming down from the Saeum Mountains. Sometimes powerful demons descend around here, such as undead, small dragon species living in the mountains and giants such as cyclops, where past war victims have become demons. Other classic forest wolves, gray bears, goblins and oaks come down for Aurelia Avenue, so for once, they did not take the form of a crusade request and were deemed to have accomplished only the number they defeated.

"… there are no massive walls around the new city. For this reason, some adventurers hunt only the demons around them. Even if I say it's near the city, it's a few kilometers away, so there's nothing like demons showing up in the city..."

(I heard it was an academic city, so I thought it was safe. It's surprisingly dangerous. Well, Mr. Hamish, as much as my class does escorts, so I guess the streets ahead are dangerous...)

"… and we have a unique request here. He's an escort for teachers in colleges and private schools."

Ray said, "Escort? Not mercenaries?" and lean his neck.

The receptionist said, "I'm sorry. It was speechless," he smiles and bows his head gently.

"The teachers will be escorts when they go to investigate in the mountains and woods. Teachers specializing in pharmacy and demonic ecology in particular will be asked to escort adventurers familiar with the mountains and forests. This request is rewarding, so it always disappears quickly."

Her explanation is that these two are the main requests and there are more than a hundred adventurers in this Doctus as well.

"Those who are also enrolled in the Mercenary Guild are understaffed by participating in the Demonic Crusade. It's also very helpful as a guild to come to high level adventurers like Master Ashley."

Ashley thanked the receptionist and began discussing the request she would receive today in the meeting space.

"I'm going to try a demon crusade in the near field today, what do you think?

Ray and Stella had no objection either, so Ashley goes to the inn where she used to stay to keep her horses and luggage.

The inn was on the east side of the new city, and the Rays saw a group of light gods heading east on their way to the inn.

About a hundred saint knights in bright white armor and a large four-headed carriage - a boxcarriage with luxurious decorations - go about ten pairs. Behind it were the miserably dressed men carrying large backpacks.

(As ten people per carriage, about two hundred in all? No, there are about two hundred soldiers on foot behind it, so what about four hundred? And the soldiers are pretty poorly equipped. Are you a heavy soldier, not a soldier? No, it feels closer to saying "mutilated soldiers"...)

The soldiers in his eyes wore rather tedious gear. Leather armor used in and discolored into spots, linen clothes and leather shoes rubbed off and worn out, by the way, a floating iron helmet with dented rust, no sword, with a black discolored spear in his hand with a tired and giving up look on his face.

Ray carries so much supplies that he thinks he's a heavy soldier, but that was most of the tools for the camp. They were conscripted peasant soldiers who were not allowed to stay in the inn when they entered the city.

When the story of the Demonic Crusaders came out, there happened to be a battalion planning to head from the Holy Capital to the border with the Caerm Empire. The leaders of the Holy Capital laid eyes on its battalion and decided to send it to Lax as a Demonic Crusader. Most of the battalions were peasant militias and they were packed into ships from the Holy City of Paxlumen to the commercial city of Aurelia without being informed of any change of destination.

Fatigue had accumulated because he had also marched from Aurelia to match the horse's feet. Bishop Gastaldi visited the Rays yesterday, so he could rest, but the fatigue of the forcible forces, which spanned hundreds of km, had not recovered.

The Rays hid in the shadows of the building so that they could not be found in the Light Divinity, and headed back to the Inn where all the armies were gone.

Ashley's habitual residence was named the "Wheat Barrel" Pavilion, which was likely to be a favorite drunken mercenary.

It's cleaner inside than it's associated with the name, ask the woman who was at the front desk for three rooms for one, and keep the horse.

Place your luggage in your room, head north up the new city, and into the woods.

The moment we went into the woods, Stella noticed a gaze that could be directed at us. But in an instant the feeling disappeared and I didn't know where I was looking from.

(I felt my gaze in the city sometimes, but I thought it was because we were rare. Feeling gaze even in the woods means there's surveillance... and that sounds awesome. The Devil's gaze felt stronger...)

"Master Ray, Master Ashley, someone is following me. It doesn't seem like a Demon tribe, but the way the signs were erased was the same as the first-rate one. Please be careful."

Ashley cares about her surroundings and asks, "Did you feel hostile," Stella shook her neck to the side,

"I didn't feel anything like hostility. So far, it seems to be just surveillance."

"Not the Demons, they're awesome...... Light Divinity, huh? If you're from the inside where Stella was, it seems possible... what do we do, Ash?

"Right. Once we move through the woods, we head back to the city. If Ray's predictions are correct, he would be a beast watchman. Then if it goes well, we can identify the watchman. But what's the purpose?

"Hi Bishop of the Light Divinity, Bishop Gastaldi is acting strangely. You tried to get me to cooperate, and I can't believe there's going to be ten pieces of gold on every map. I don't know what the purpose is, but I thought it wouldn't be weird to put on surveillance. The other could be a collaborator of the Demon Clan, but even if you follow us this far, the timing is off. Light divinity sounds like the best thing in time."

Ray turns to Stella and gives instructions, "Pretend not to notice the surveillance unless you feel like killing it".

The three advance through the woods, alerting their surroundings to stay out of the city.

Stella had complicated thoughts, mindful of the surveillance eyes she felt from time to time.

(Similar to the training of "Li” … Again, he is from Li… If he intends to do harm to you both, he will not forgive even those he finds out…)

After walking in the woods for about an hour, the Rays abruptly begin to return to the city.

The watchmen were following the Rays as they distanced themselves.

Their leader was aware that Stella was on the lookout.

(I heard the daughter of an awesome beast man is one of them, but is she from "Inside”? No, there's a lot of ups and downs in the emotions that I feel signs of for that. Is it another organization somewhere......)

He takes further distance to fulfill orders from his superiors, the priests.

Once again back near the city, the Rays stopped at his behest.

"I'm going to speak to someone who's watching you, what do you think?

Ashley was tilting her neck at his inquiry.

"For what? And what are you gonna say to that? First, don't come out over there."

"It's also stressful to stay under surveillance, so try to do something about it. If the person you're watching is from the same“ inside ”as Stella, I don't think we can talk about it, but if Phototheism is in the back, there should be a report for your boss..."

Ray explained to the watchman that even though he was unwilling to antagonize Phototheism here, he would declare that if the Phototheistic side was going to put surveillance on him and attack him for a gap, he would fight him thoroughly.

"If surveillance is phototheistic, this should change the way surveillance works. If it was a demon clan or a totally different weave, it could be a serpent, but if it's this close to the city, I think we can get away with it."

Ashley said, "What does Stella think?" and ask for an opinion.

"I think Master Ray is right. Because I feel like the same trained person I am."

Ashley nodded at it,

"Running into the city is a top priority if you get hit. It's minimal to fight back."

Ray smiles after something like "Roger," "Well, if it's enough to make a scene in the city, it's probably going to be okay because it's going to be attacking us in the woods," he says.

And loud enough to sound like a watchman,

"I know I'm watching! If you're after a gap while you're fucking around, it's no use! If Phototheism is going to eliminate us, this one fights back with the willingness to die. This is still a mercenary of the Mercenary Corps of Markat (Red Arms). The three of them will take you on the road, so call me with your intentions!

He hisses inside and when he says so, sets up his love spear Album Corne (white horn).

Next to him, Ashley and Stella had also pulled out their swords, spreading their killing spirit around him.

"If we're going to stick together any more, we recognize that Light God is our enemy! If you can't make a decision, ask your boss!

And the three of them went into the city, vigilant around.

The leaders of the remaining monitors...

(Totally noticed. Once away, it is impossible to monitor without being noticed… we can only leave it to the discretion of the bishop…)

He ran one of his men to report, and we decided to distance ourselves from the Rays.

Bishop Gastaldi was resting in a town halfway through which he received the report.

And in response to the Ordnance of the Beast Troops, he said, "Are you satisfied that you can't even monitor us?," he shouted, kicking and persisting in his assault even after he fell.

A werewolf beast, the decree was desperately enduring, spitting blood reflexes, due to the relentless assault of the bishop.

assault enough, and the slightly calm bishop,

"Keep an eye on the inn. If you can confirm that you have taken out the inn, mark where it will be headed. And call me right away."

The preaching of the beast man, who vomited blood reflexes and was squatting, left the room in an unconstrained foothold after kneeling and thanking the bishop.

The remaining bishops are:

(I didn't see him, but you were talking about having an animal man's daughter. The stories of the beasts say that they are trained by the mutineers. But there shouldn't be a "tutored beast man” under the control of our country... is something going on out there somewhere unknown to the Order? Or are you just not informed by me?... you can't lose sight of it in any case. We have to hold back only the location at all costs...)

The Rays enter the city, but surveillance eyes were still attached.

(It's been half a day since the bishops left, so even if they ran to the decree, the eyes of surveillance shouldn't disappear for a day today. If there's still someone in charge for surveillance, surveillance should be loose already... does that mean there's no will to be hostile at the moment, at least not attacked? Or is there an entirely different intention? Well, tomorrow morning you'll know...)

He told the Ashleys about it,

"You should stay in the city today. Take a stroll through the new city and kill your time."

The three go for a stroll through the new city. Stella was worried about the eyes of the surveillance, thinking about who the “enemy” was.

(Master Ray says so, I know you're a light god official, but I don't like the nearby presence of people who don't know when they'll be “enemies"... I can't protect them alone if they're in there. I don't know what to do...)

Back at the inn by the time the sun tilted, Stella couldn't feel the gaze of surveillance either.

"Looks like you were a light god after all. But what's the purpose?

Ashley is not going to loosen his guard,

"It is dangerous to decide in the present circumstances. Looks like the three of us should go to sleep tonight."

Dinner that day didn't even drink, and a hard time passed.

The next morning, after breakfast, I did not head to the guild, but straight to the woods.

Although Stella felt her gaze only for a moment outside the inn, she could not feel any further signs of surveillance.

"So far, I can't feel it. From yesterday, it is possible to rehearse" Who "..."

"Ray's idea may have hit me, but don't loosen your guard"

The three went into the woods, heightening their vigilance.

There were no signs of surveillance as they entered the woods, and they headed out into the back of the woods thoughtfully, even as they alerted to the trap.

Behind the woods, as we go north, we go uphill. After about an hour, the gradient became even tougher and felt more like a mountain forest than a forest.

There were no signs of surveillance even there.

"Apparently, it was a hit on my mind."

"Oh, I'm pretty sure it's light theistic surveillance. I'm guessing it's also rumored" Beast Squad ”because of the quality of the signs Stella felt."

I uttered the question that Ray was feeling in Ashley's words.

"You just never showed up. Speaking of Beast Troops, you're the most elite unit in Luke's Holy Kingdom, aren't you? Is that all you're saying is that you're investing in a demonic crusade? And I'm going to leave that elite behind in my surveillance... and I wonder what Light God is thinking."

At the end of the day, it feels like whining to myself.

"Well, I can't help thinking about it. I'm at the corner, and let's hunt for demons. Of course, the eyes of surveillance are on the alert."

The Ashleys also nodded and proceeded to search through the mountain forest for traces of demons.

We encountered a herd of about twenty gray wolves (Graywolves) in the mountain forest.

The wolves also seemed to wander around looking for food, which seemed to be a complete encounter.

"It's Greywolf. I'm coming this way!

The battle begins with Stella's warning.

Ray strikes an arrow of light into an approaching swarm of wolves, rendering the three wolves powerless.

Ashley sees the fast-moving wolves besides her thoughts and gives instructions to both of them, pointing to a nearby tree.

"There are many! I'm gonna put that tree on your back! Ray's in the center, Stella's on the left, and I'm on the right!

The Rays wait for the wolves with the big trees on their backs, as Ashley instructs.

The gray wolves, as many as calves, stop a few meters in front and surround them in double triplicate. And I was gauging when I was going to jump.

One wolf, like a leader of a herd, growls like a howl.

The wolves bow their heads for a moment, build up their strength, and then jump at the Rays.

But the Rays were calm.

Ray takes advantage of the spear range to restrain the wolves and sharpen their momentum. The wolves that have been removed between them, for a few moments, cause stray in their movements.

Stella follows the stray.

She danced in between the stopped wolves on her feet, buried the two wolves and immediately returned to her original place.

The wolves who returned to me roared again, attacking, but were clearly out of control.

"Ray! Stella! You don't have to kill me! Minimize the time you hang on one! Don't get attached!

Ashley slashes and rips the wolf in front of her herself as she gives her instructions.

In about five minutes, more than ten bodies had piled up in front of them.

The wolf leader raises his regretful voice and lags behind in an attempt to pull it off.

The intact wolves also follow their leader and retreat, but Ray's magic hangs on to the chase.

Striking a crossbow of light into the three wolves, the five or so surviving wolves literally wrapped their tails around them and fled.

Ashley calls out to both of them, "Is there an injury?" but the two of them returned a voice, "" It's okay. "

Ashley smiled and said, "Don't move more than you think. You don't seem to be blunt," he told Ray, smiling and answering, too.

"Right. Once upon a time, even these wolves struggled quite a bit, but became a little stronger?

Stella joins their story, even as she guards her surroundings.

She remembers the battle with the demons around the village of Thysek,

"I felt monotonous and not very dangerous when it was just wolves. Again, you feel more threatened by being attacked in 3D."

Ashley nodded, "Right," too,

"Thinking about it, the Demon Demon Warrior (Monster Tame) move is a threat."

"Sure. I think it would have been quite a struggle if it had been attacked from above in addition to the wolves this time. I can't afford to use magic in that situation."

When the three finished collecting the Demonic Crystal Stone from the wolves, they returned to the city.

Enter the city and redeem the Demon Crystal Stone at the Alliance Branch. As we left the guild, Stella felt the gaze directed at us.

"Also, I felt the gaze of surveillance. It disappeared quickly, but what should we do?

Ray looked at Stella and Ashley,

"Maybe there's surveillance near the inn, too. I guess you switched to a way to monitor it at pinpoint without being attached. But what are you really after?

He was right, there was something like a watchman's gaze even near the inn.

(Am I the target? Then what for? If you just want a user of light attributes, you shouldn't have to go through all this trouble. Maybe my body, Ray Arklight, has some secrets...)

Ray was thinking about the thoughts of light divinity.
