The plant creature looked up and gave them a big, wide smile as he waved back. "Hi!" His voice was high-pitched with a little croaking sound to it. That made the girls laugh.
"That is very impressive," Sam said with a grin as he waved at the little guy too.
"I can create a few more to act as watchers, but they won’t be capable of any combat abilities," Gabrielle explained. "Creating battle-ready plant warriors is something only more experienced Druids can do. So these little guys will be purely lookouts, and will come wake us up if there is any trouble."
Sam nodded. "Okay, sounds good."
Gabrielle created four more, and then pointed at Sam. "This is Captain Sam Draconis. You’re now part of his pirate crew!"
The five little mushroom guys threw their tiny hands up and cheered in their high-pitched voices. That made everyone giggle.
"What are your first orders, Cap’n?" the firstborn mushroom guy asked.
"Well, first you guys need names," Sam replied. "Since you were the first one, you’ll be the leader of the Night Watchers! We’ll call you Sarge! And the rest of you, you’ll be Merry, Happy, Joyboy, and Glee!"
The Watchers all cheered again as they were given cute little names.
"You’ll watch the ship at night while we sleep, and then you can rest during the day and absorb sunlight," Sam explained. Then he turned to Lazula. "Since you are the most experienced with life at sea, can you teach them everything they need to know?"
She nodded. "Sure thing. Since there are five of them, I’d say we should have one stay near the helm, one up in the crow’s nest, one at the front of the ship, one at the back, and the fifth can patrol back and forth on the deck."
Sam nodded. "That sounds like a good plan."
After Lazula showed them everything they needed to know, Sarge stayed at the helm, while the other four spread out to the other roles discussed.
That first night, Sam and the girls just cuddled together and slept. The next day, they made meals from food they had put in their bags when fleeing Ravager’s Roost. When the sun was out, the Night Watchers slept curled up in the wooden planters in the greenhouse.
The following night, Sam felt well enough for some fun.

Calista and Lazula cheered, but Gabrielle just blushed and had a nervous look on her face. "Just... Go easy on me, okay? It’s my first time."

She grinned and nodded.
