Her response came back in under a minute.

I know. I’ve been watching the threshold approach for three days. A pause. Are you ready for what happens after market close.

Yes, he said.

Meridian is going to know who they’re fighting tonight, she said.

They should have known earlier, he said. It doesn’t change anything.

A longer pause.

No, she said. It doesn’t. I’ll brief Thomas and the founders before the market closes so nobody is surprised.

He put his phone in his pocket and went to his morning economics class.

—-------------------

The disclosure filed at two fifteen.

By three thirty his phone had more notifications than he’d received in any previous single afternoon and he’d been through several significant afternoons.

Marcus texted. Ten point three percent. You’ve been busy.

Derek texted nothing. He sent a single period, which from Derek communicated something Sean interpreted as confirmed.

Priya texted a question mark followed by three exclamation marks which was the most expressive thing she’d ever sent him.

Joel texted: Makes sense. Two words. Exactly right.

From outside the investment club world the messages were different.

His economics professor sent a brief formal email noting that Sean’s position had been flagged by a financial news wire and asking if Sean would be available to speak to the business faculty’s visiting lecture series. Sean read it twice and decided to respond later.

A journalist he’d never heard of contacted him through his university email asking for comment on the disclosure. Sean didn’t respond.

His phone rang at four oh three.

Unknown number. London area code.

He answered.

"Mr. Miller." A man’s voice. Measured and unhurried, the specific quality of someone who had been in significant rooms long enough to have stopped performing significance. "My name is Laurent Fischer. I’m a managing partner at Vantage Capital in London. I’d like to speak with you about your Vertex position."

Sean sat with that for a moment.

Vantage Capital was a name he recognized. A mid-size fund with a genuine technology sector focus, the kind of fund that made decisions based on their own analysis rather than following institutional consensus. He’d come across them three times in the research he’d done on the data infrastructure sector.

"How did you get this number," said Sean.

"With some difficulty," said Fischer. "Which I consider a positive signal about the person I’m trying to reach."

"What do you want to talk about," said Sean.

"I’ve been watching the Vertex situation for two weeks," said Fischer. "I read the shareholder communication your team produced about Meridian’s acquisition history. I read Clara Weston’s statement last week. I read the Sarah Okonkwo piece." A pause. "And today I see that the person driving the independent shareholder position is eighteen years old and holds ten point three percent of the company."

"Yes," said Sean.

"I want to understand what you see," said Fischer. "Not the analysis. The actual thing you see when you look at this company."

Sean looked out the window.

"Three hundred and forty businesses built their operations around a product," he said. "They renew at eighty-seven percent not because they’re locked in but because the product keeps being worth renewing. The founders made decisions early, expensive decisions, about building it correctly rather than building it fast. Those decisions are now competitive advantages that didn’t exist when they made them." He paused. "The market hasn’t priced what Vertex is correctly. Meridian has. That’s why they want it."

A silence.

"And you’re going to block the acquisition," said Fischer.

"The count is there," said Sean.

"I know the count," said Fischer. "I’ve been tracking the shareholder communications carefully enough to have a view on it." Another pause. "If Vertex stays independent and moves toward a funding round. Would you be having conversations with external investors."

"The timing and parameters of any funding round are the founders’ decision," said Sean.

"Of course," said Fischer. "I’m not asking about the round. I’m asking whether you’d be having conversations."

Sean thought about that distinction.

"Yes," he said. "I’d be having conversations."

"I’d like to be in one of them," said Fischer.

"I’ll make a note of that," said Sean.

"I’d also like to say something else," said Fischer. "Off the record if you prefer."

"On the record is fine," said Sean.

"I’ve been in this industry for twenty-two years," said Fischer. "I’ve spoken to a great many people about a great many investments. The way you just described what you see in Vertex, not the metrics, the actual thing, is not how most people talk about companies." A pause. "It’s how the best people talk about companies. The ones who understand that a business is a set of relationships with the people who use it, not a set of numbers on a page."

Sean looked at the city outside.

"The numbers are how you verify the relationships," he said. "Not the other way around."

Fischer was quiet for a moment.

"Yes," he said. "Exactly that." He paused. "I look forward to being in one of those conversations, Mr. Miller."

The call ended.

Sean looked at his phone for a long moment.

Then he called Clara.

She picked up immediately. "Laurent Fischer called you."

"Yes," said Sean. "You know him."

"He emailed me an hour ago," she said. "He said he was going to reach out to you directly. I told him that was his decision to make." A pause. "He’s legitimate. Twenty-two years, strong technology sector track record, the kind of investor who holds for the right reasons."

"He’d be the right kind of investor for the funding round," said Sean.

"I know," she said. "That’s why I gave him your number." She paused. "I hope that was okay."

"It was okay," he said.

"Three other inquiries came in this afternoon after the disclosure," she said. "All from people who have been watching the situation. Two are funds I recognize. One is an individual I don’t know yet but Max is probably already looking at."

"Probably," said Sean.

She was quiet for a moment. "The disclosure changed the shape of the story."
