Chapter 200: War in the Bogs
Jannah stood frozen against Dorrent’s chest, her breathing coming in fast, ragged gasps, her knuckles white where she was still clutching his shirt. She swallowed hard, forcing her chin up as she glared back at the scarred man through her tears.
"My parents are NOT regretting me!" Jannah shrieked back, her voice breaking with emotional turmoil. "They are not regretting anything! In fact, they must be happy up there right now because the true cause of their death is finally being investigated so their souls can rest in peace!"
Mr. Dromote let out a cold, sharp laugh that sounded entirely unhinged. He pointed a shaking finger at her face, his eyes flashing with a sinister truth. "Investigated?! You poor, pathetic fool! Maybe you haven’t heard the news circulating through the lower sector this morning, Jannah! You think the Grefos are your saviors? Your grandfather Duro didn’t die of old age! He was murdered by the Grefos too!"
The words hit the small room like a physical, suffocating explosion.
Jannah’s vision went briefly black. She froze entirely, her breath trapping itself in her throat as her heart did a violent, terrifying skip. She stared at Mr. Dromote, a sudden, cold sweat breaking out across her nape.
"Stop... stop making up sick stories!" Jannah choked out, her voice dropping into a frantic, trembling whisper as she shook her head repeatedly. "Stop lying to me! I was with the Grefos when my grandfather passed away! I literally witnessed his very last breath with my own eyes... while Dorrent was standing right beside me! He was sick! His memory was failing!"
"It seems you don’t know anything at all about the snakes you’re sleeping with," Dromote spat back, his voice dripping with venomous pity.
Before Jannah could demand a further explanation, Dromote turned his head slightly toward the open doorway, a dark, wicked grin touching his lips.
"And besides," Dromote added, looking back at Dorrent with disdain, "you don’t have time to play good here, Alpha Grefo. Look outside. There is absolute chaos in the streets. The entire 3rd Street sector has gathered... and they want you to face their wrath today!"
Dorrent’s expression went rigid. The brief moment of vulnerability vanished, replaced instantly by the cold, dangerous authority of an S-tier predator. "Then I will go see them," Dorrent delivered flatly, his deep voice carrying a freezing finality.
Dromote spun on his heel and marched out the shattered door, leading the way into the narrow alleyway.
Dorrent reached down, his hand wrapping securely around Jannah’s wrist, pulling her along with him as he stepped across the threshold into the damp morning air.
The moment they stepped out, a deafening, terrifying roar of human anger hit their ears.
The narrow lane was completely packed with hundreds of angry residents. Men with iron bars, market women holding rocks, and disgraced Alphas from the lower gangs had completely surrounded the transport. Up near the front of the vehicle, Shadron and Shalen were standing back-to-back, their faces pale as they desperately tried to use their authority to cool down the violent crowd that looked ready to tear Dorrent apart piece by piece.
"Back off!" Shadron was yelling, his hand hovering near his concealed holster. "Back off before the security people engages!"
"Bring out the Grefo monster!" a man in the front row screamed, hurling a rusted brick that shattered against the transport’s glass. "He killed our people years ago! He thinks his billions can buy our silence!"
Dorrent strode directly into the center of the hostile crowd, his imposing frame completely dominating the space, his S-tier frost pheromones flaring in a heavy, defensive aura that made the front row of protesters involuntarily stumble back step.
Jannah, still trapped at his side, scanned the sea of angry faces, her heart hammering wildly. But as her eyes drifted past the shouting crowd toward the very back of the alleyway, near the shadows of an abandoned warehouse, she suddenly froze.
Standing on the elevated steps of the warehouse, completely isolated from the chaos, were two men in immaculate, dark tailored suits.
Damian Boren stood with his arms crossed tightly against his chest, his golden eyes filled with a troubled shadow as he watched Jannah’s frame. And beside him stood his father—Bellero Boren. The old Mafia lord was leaning casually on a heavy gold-topped cane, a slow, triumphant, and psychopathic smile plastered across his face as he watched the mob threaten to tear his rival to shreds.
Dorrent’s eyes locked dead onto the old Mafia lord in the distance. The puzzle pieces instantly clicked together inside his brilliant mind with a horrific certainty. This mob wasn’t an organic uprising; it was a calculated, orchestrated execution. Bellero Boren had whipped the grieving slums into a frenzy, and brought Damian here to watch the Grefos fall, intending to use the chaos to tear Jannah away permanently.
A smirk cut across Dorrent’s handsome face. His eyes flashed with a sudden, demonic crimson light—a display of savagery.
If the old Mafia lord wanted a war over the girl... Dorrent was going to give him a devastating ruin.
Without breaking eye contact with Bellero Boren across the crowd, Dorrent’s hand reached up to Jannah’s collar. In one smooth, deliberate, and possessive motion, he pulled the fabric of her clothe aside, exposing the expanse of her right collarbone and scent gland to the entire crowd—and directly into the clear line of sight of the two Borens.
There, glowing brightly under the morning light, was the unmistakable mark of his S-tier knot.
On the warehouse steps, Bellero Boren’s psychopathic smile completely vanished. His golden eyes widened in shock, his face turning an angry, apoplectic shade of crimson as he recognized the permanent, unbreachable biological lock. His hands tightened around his gold cane so hard the metal groaned under his grip.
Beside him, Damian Boren’s face turned deathly pale, his breath catching sharply in his throat as a look of total, agonizing defeat shattered his composure.
Bellero’s chest heaved with uncontrollable fury. He lunged forward against the railing, his voice exploding into a venomous shriek.
"That filthy, arrogant bastard... HE MARKED HER!!!"
