Chapter 65: Accomplices Are Cheaper than the Prize
Severin’s left boot came down as the short spear entered the gap beside Alicia.
The line Threat Vector had given him lasted for 1 heartbeat. He spent it all. Wisdom’s Edge struck the shaft close to the man’s hands, cracking the wood sideways. The spearhead missed Alicia’s shoulder and stabbed past her into empty air.
Severin crossed the threshold with the deflection. His return cut opened the man’s throat, and blood struck the left chain lane before the body folded clear of the drain.
A worker screamed. "Down!" Alicia caught him by the shoulder and shoved him behind her. "Stay behind me!"
The spear wielder hadn’t hit the floor when Vardren Korr drew the heavy sword from his right hip.
"Varo, right. Jast, close. Teren. Case. West mark."
Varo flung his hook toward Severin’s sword arm. Loose chain hissed over stone while Jast drove through the center. Behind them, Teren snatched the sealed case from the tool bench, leaving the key ring and rolled toolkit where the case had rested.
Vardren backed toward the brass plate. Grit jumped around it, tracing a circle through the dust 4 paces wide.
Teren ran into the circle’s edge. The unseen pressure stopped his chest while the case kept moving and slammed against his hip. He staggered outside the boundary. Vardren crossed it without resistance.
The hook swept across Severin’s right forearm line. He shortened his arm, let the iron pass outside his wrist, and pinned the loose chain beneath his left boot.
Varo hauled. The chain stopped. Varo didn’t.
His own pull dragged him forward with his right arm high and his ribs open. Wisdom’s Edge entered beneath the raised arm and drove through his chest. Severin withdrew before the man’s weight reached him, leaving Varo beside the hauling bar.
Jast was already there. His axe came low, forcing the path toward the dark stone above the buried runoff. "Left edge is hollow!" Saelith called.
Severin planted on dry stone inside the swing. The axe passed his thigh. His left hand closed around Jast’s right forearm above the wrist, stopping the recovery as the man tried to wrench free.
He might as well have pulled against the chamber wall. Severin stepped into the open centerline and put Wisdom’s Edge through him. Jast’s breath broke against his shoulder. Severin drew the blade free, turned the body south, and let it fall on dry stone without touching the Core cradle.
Vardren’s pressure swelled behind him. Nothing about his coat or sword changed, yet his posture dragged every glance back to him. A reserve guard behind the choke started forward, then caught himself.
Marienne didn’t move. "He’s Rank A."
"Keep your guards back," Severin said.
"They’re back." Her gaze cut toward Teren. "Stop that case."
Teren had slung the strap over his left shoulder. He drew a narrow knife with his right hand and ran along the outside of the dust circle while Vardren kept retreating within it. He was buying distance with other people’s blood.
Severin crossed the space before Teren reached the mark. His left hand hooked the strap and ripped the man backward. Teren spun with the pull and stabbed wildly.
"Get off me!"
The guard of Wisdom’s Edge cracked against his knife wrist. The knife rang across dry stone.
Severin dragged the strap across Teren’s chest, turned with his momentum, and drove him into the floor beside the hauling bar. Air burst from the man’s lungs. The case tore loose and landed beyond his fingers, still outside the circle. Teren clawed at the strap with his left hand. Severin released it and went on.
Vardren stopped 1 pace short of the brass. The plate darkened before his left boot could reach it. Air folded above the metal, shallow and wrong. Core light bent along the rim. Nothing appeared beyond it, but Vardren changed direction at once and drove for the plate.
An exit.
Severin hit the circle. Pressure closed over his shoulders and right leg, found him, resisted him, then yielded beneath his next step. Dust blew outward from his boots.
Vardren cut diagonally before Severin cleared the boundary. The heavy blade carried real weight. Wisdom’s Edge caught it close to the guard. Severin turned the edge past his left shoulder, seized Vardren’s right wrist, and dragged the sword arm down.
Vardren’s left boot remained less than 1 pace from the brass. Severin pulled him away before it could descend. Wisdom’s Edge cut behind the left knee. The leg collapsed.
Vardren’s mouth opened on a sound that never became a word. Severin stepped inside his fall and drove the pale-silver blade beneath the lower ribs. Resistance tightened around the steel, then gave.
He withdrew and turned Vardren south-west. The man struck dry stone 1 pace from the plate. His heavy sword left his hand and slid against the counterweight frame as the distortion above the brass thinned.
Vardren tried to rise. His injured leg folded beneath him, and blood spread under his side. He still breathed, but the brass lay behind Severin and the sword lay beyond his reach.
For a moment, the only movement in the chamber came from the open drain and Teren’s failed attempt to push himself onto a knee. Marienne’s guards remained behind the choke. Alicia stood over the workers with her tail rigid and both ears turned toward Severin. Saelith kept her boots off the hollow edge and watched the outlet.
"The water’s moving," Saelith said. "Nothing fell into it."
Marienne looked at the sealed case beside Teren. "That case stays where I can see it."
"You can see it," Severin said. "Don’t touch it."
Her eyes sharpened, but her hand stayed low. "My chamber. My Core."
"Then keep your people out until I’m finished."
Teren made it onto his left elbow. "No. Wait—"
Severin kicked the knife beyond his reach and pinned the case strap beneath his right boot. The case stayed on the stone. His left hand closed over Teren’s shoulder and the back of his neck while Wisdom’s Edge remained in his right, its point angled away from the man’s body. Teren bucked. His injured wrist failed when he tried again.
Dense black mist rose around them. It moved against the drain’s airflow, dimming the Core light and swallowing the scrape of Teren’s boots. His breath became a muffled rasp as the mist closed over his head, chest, and kicking legs.
His body stopped bucking. A second resistance still pressed against the mist without muscle or bone, searching for the last opening. Severin closed it.

The mist contracted, and Teren vanished intact. The sealed case remained beneath Severin’s boot. His knife lay where it had rung across the floor; the key ring and rolled toolkit still rested on the tool bench.
Marienne stared at the empty stone. "What did you just do?"
"Kept him."
"Where?"
"Somewhere he can’t run."
Severin lifted his boot from the case strap and moved through the chamber. Black mist streamed from his steps, passing around the fixed chains and hauling bars. It took the broken short spear from the left chain lane, then Varo’s hook with its loose chain, Jast’s axe, and Teren’s knife. The anchored iron never shifted.
At the tool bench, the mist folded around the key ring and rolled toolkit. Metal clicked inside the cloth before both vanished into the Vault. Marienne’s gaze followed the mist from the fallen weapons to the tool bench and stopped on the sealed case it left behind.
Then Severin turned to the dead. Black mist ran along the left chain lane and climbed over the first corpse, leaving the fixed chain bare. It darkened the reflected Core light, moved against the air from the drain, and muffled the last wet shift of cloth.

Kelm disappeared.
A guard behind Marienne whispered, "Gods..."
The mist rose beside the right hauling bar. It closed around Varo without touching the anchored rig, and the small sounds of settling armor died inside it.

When it contracted, only blood remained. Jast was last. Black mist rolled low across the dry floor, stopped short of the Core cradle, then climbed over his boots and body.

The mist took him and left the stone bare. Severin returned to Vardren.
Vardren lay south-west of the brass plate with his useless left leg folded beneath him. Blood had spread farther from the wound under his ribs. His sword remained beside the counterweight frame, beyond his reach.
Severin stopped over his right shoulder and laid Wisdom’s Edge flat beside his own right boot. Vardren’s eyes followed the blade.
Severin’s left hand closed in the hair at the back of his head. His right took the jaw. He lifted Vardren’s face and shoulders just enough to make him look up.
"Look at me."
Vardren’s teeth showed. Blood wet the corner of his mouth. "You don’t know what—"
Black mist gathered around Severin’s boots and climbed toward Vardren’s shoulders. It moved against the air from the living drain and dimmed the Core’s reflection across the floor. The scrape of Vardren’s next breath dulled inside it.
