Chapter 56: [56]: The Chained God’s Shadow, Valdor’s Approach
Levi pushed himself up off the polished black marble floor of the boss room. His real-world arms still ached from the twenty-minute marathon of swinging his heavy scythe, but the massive permanent Agility boost from his plunder passive was making his avatar feel practically weightless.
He walked over to the dissolving remains of Wraith King Morwen.
The boss had dropped an absolute fortune. There were multiple stacks of high-tier gold coins, massive piles of rare bone-crafting materials, and a dozen glowing silver and gold item boxes. Levi didn’t bother sorting through them right now. He just opened his spatial inventory and vacuumed the entire pile up, planning to dump it all into his Boundless Fusion menu later.
As the last gold coin vanished into his inventory, the ambient atmosphere of the Undercrypt suddenly shifted.
It wasn’t a game mechanic. The pale blue torches lining the walls of the colosseum violently flickered and then dimmed to a sickly, suffocating gray. The ambient temperature, which was already freezing, dropped so fast that thick layers of digital ice crawled up the stone pillars.
The shadows in the corners of the room lengthened unnaturally, stretching across the floor like spilled ink.
Levi instantly gripped his Sovereign’s Deathknell scythe. He ran his eyes over his UI. His health was full. His mana was full. He had 118 Speed.
"Did I trigger a hidden second phase?" Levi muttered, tightening his grip on the weapon.
A figure stepped out of the unnaturally dark shadows near the back of the room.
Levi relaxed his stance slightly, but he didn’t put his weapon away.
It was a woman wearing a plain, untextured gray cloak. She held a basic, Level 1 wooden beginner’s staff in her hand. Her face was completely devoid of emotion, her eyes looking like blank, robotic lenses.
It was Isolde. The Anomaly.
Levi noticed immediately that something was fundamentally wrong with her. The last time he saw her in the Drowned Hollows, she looked like a pristine, low-level newbie. Now, her gray cloak was heavily scorched and torn. But more importantly, the green health bar floating above her head was visibly damaged. It was sitting at roughly 80%.
In Levi’s past life, it was a known fact that Anomalies—human hosts for the descending Gods—did not take damage from standard game mechanics. They were practically invulnerable admins. For her health bar to be chipped meant she had been fighting something completely outside the normal server parameters.
Isolde walked toward him. She didn’t trigger any footstep audio. She just glided over the marble floor.
"The timeline accelerates," Isolde stated.
Her voice didn’t come from her character model. It bypassed the spatial audio engine entirely and broadcast directly into Levi’s ears, sounding perfectly flat and devoid of human inflection.
Levi frowned. "Accelerates? You mean the merge?"
"The descending pantheon has noticed the game’s code breaking," Isolde said, her robotic eyes locking onto Levi’s Gold-tier scythe. "A statistical anomaly is generating too much power too fast. The system is reacting to your presence. You are forcing the timeline."
Levi actually laughed. "So it’s my fault the Gods are getting impatient because I’m leveling up?"
"Mockery is irrelevant," Isolde replied, completely deadpan. "The system has forcibly triggered a major World Boss event ahead of schedule to correct the anomaly. Valdor The Chained will spawn in the Searing Crater in exactly forty-eight hours."
Levi stopped smiling.
He knew exactly who Valdor The Chained was. Valdor wasn’t just a tough dungeon boss. He was a Level 40 World Boss. In the original timeline of Aethelgard, Valdor wasn’t supposed to spawn for another month. It took a coordinated raid of over five thousand players to bring him down.
"A Level 40 World Boss on week one of the server," Levi said, doing the math instantly in his head. "I’m Level 23. That is a seventeen-level gap. The suppression penalty is going to be eighty-five percent. My damage will be completely deleted."
Isolde didn’t care about his math. "If Valdor is not killed by a player, the God’s true consciousness will permanently anchor to this digital plane. The real-world merge will begin immediately. Aethelgard will end."
Levi stared at her. If the apocalypse started in two days, he was completely screwed. He wouldn’t have time to hit max level. He wouldn’t have time to build his empire. He would be stuck exactly where he was, and humanity would be wiped out.
"Why are you telling me this?" Levi asked, narrowing his eyes. "You’re an Anomaly. You’re hosting one of them. Shouldn’t you want the merge to happen?"
Isolde’s character model glitched violently. Static ran across her gray cloak for a fraction of a second. "My host requires the original timeline to prepare. Valdor is acting independently. The pantheon is fractured."
Before Levi could interrogate her further about the internal politics of the apocalypse, Isolde raised her wooden staff.
She tapped the butt of the staff against the polished marble floor.
She didn’t cast a spell. She simply vanished. One frame she was standing there, and the next, the server completely removed her model from the room.
The pale blue torches instantly flared back to full brightness. The freezing temperature stabilized. The ambient audio of the dungeon returned.
Levi just stood there, staring at the empty space where the Anomaly had been.
"Forty-eight hours," Levi muttered.
He walked over to the spot where Isolde had been standing. Resting on the marble floor was a single, glowing crystal shard. It pulsed with a blinding white light that looked completely out of place in the dark dungeon.
Levi picked it up.
[Platinum Anomaly Shard]
[Rarity: Platinum]
[Effect: A fragment of raw administrative code. Can be used as a Divine catalyst in high-tier fusions.]
Levi pocketed the shard. His brain was already running the terrifying calculations for the upcoming fight.
A Level 40 World Boss meant he was looking at an 85% Level Suppression penalty. His current Total Attack was 544. If he attacked a boss with standard endgame defense through an 85% wall, he would literally deal single-digit damage. He couldn’t kill a World Boss by hitting it for 5 damage a swing before it wiped the entire zone.
He couldn’t rely on raw base stats anymore. He needed to break the math completely. He needed a consumable item so overwhelmingly powerful that it temporarily turned off the game’s rules.
"I need to upgrade my gear to the absolute pinnacle of current progression," Levi said, opening his UI.
He pulled up his Domain management screen. Because he was the owner of the Harvester’s Exchange, he had access to a fast-travel feature that let him teleport directly back to his throne room from anywhere in the world.
He hit the recall button.
"Time to empty the vault."
His body dissolved into a flash of blue light, leaving the empty, silent Undercrypt behind. The real game wasn’t about grinding anymore. It was about survival.
