Chapter 1220 - 528: Oath of Victory
Mathew Bade once thought that breaking through the city gate brought victory within reach.
Despite battling for a full day and night to finally approach reclaiming Sharp-Top Palace, there was not a trace of joy in the heart of this viper of Musillon; instead, something named anxiety constantly tormented his soul.
Laine's army has nearly suffered half losses, but what about Mathew Bade?
Out of the twenty-eight thousand undead army pulled from Musillon, more than twelve thousand undead troops have fallen before the walls of Sharp-Top Palace.
This heavy loss left Mathew Bade utterly incapable of feeling even a hint of happiness. His relentless assault, disregarding all costs, resulted in astonishing casualties. The last remaining Blood Knights of Musillon also fell atop the walls, with two Black Chalice Knights dead, and their power flowed back into him.
He had no choice; tactically, Mathew Bade, with his absolute numerical advantage, could have surrounded without attacking, slowly wearing them down. But strategically, Sharp-Top Palace had to be retaken, and it had to happen immediately within an extremely short time, so Mathew Bade could only attack at all costs.
Yes, at all costs.
But having breached the city gate, Mathew Bade gazed at the streets within the castle ahead, his eye twitching slightly.
The entire streets within Sharp-Top Palace have now been transformed, like an iron barrel, by dwarf craftsmen and engineers in a short time! Female sorcerer Teresa led the ice witch apprentices to create a plethora of ice walls, combined with dwarf architecture, blocking the streets completely! As the undead army just entered the castle, an arrow rain and musket volley inflicted heavy losses on them!
Laine and his army were already prepared for street battles!
The remaining human army and dwarf army withdrew in turn and orderly into the streets afterward, constructing a new defense line. Before Mathew Bade could even give orders, a musket volley instantly took down hundreds of undead.
"Come on! Viper of Musillon! Come to your Grandpa Dugen here!" Dwarf engineer Dugen the Ironman continued taunting behind the defenses: "I'm your Grandpa! You're the son of your damn horse!"
"Damn dwarf! I will surely use your skull as a bowl!" Mathew Bade was enraged, voicing his hateful vow, yet he did not personally lead the undead troops to charge.
The viper of Musillon still somewhat feared Laine, especially after witnessing Laine defeat Guer, the Champion of the Four Chaos Gods. Mathew Bade still harbored some dread towards Laine. He abandoned personal assault, ordering the undead to keep advancing instead.
Frost Nova! Teresa cast ice magic, the female sorcerer's face blanching somewhat. Luckily, the season was still winter, allowing the ice witches to replenish Mana directly from the environment.
Behind the defenses, Dugen the Ironman watched as Mathew Bade did not approach. The dwarf grumbled dissatisfied: "Damn it, this guy actually isn't coming! I wanted to give his simian face a taste of this!"
Behind the fortifications, each of the dozen dwarves held a hand grenade. They originally intended to trick Mathew Bade into nearing, then let him taste the dwarf's black powder with their grenades.
The result was disappointing, but it didn't matter; Dugen took down a long-barreled fire cannon from his back, ready for battle. Dwarves never give up, ever.
Belgar, leading the Angland Clan dwarves, volunteered to stand at the forefront, allowing the human army, now fatigued to the extreme, to rest first: "Laine Brothers, leave this to us! You and your men go rest first! Dwarves got this!"
By this time, Laine was covered head to toe in blood and various stains, hardly revealing that his armor was supposed to be silver. Hearing Belgar's words, Laine didn't refuse: "Hold on for twenty minutes! King Belgar! I'll soon bring reinforcements to support you!"
"Alright! Come on, damn undead, brave dwarves will surely win!" Belgar stood on his Oath Stone, ready to confront the undead army.
After withdrawing into the fortifications, the human army seized the opportunity to eat. Soldiers devoured soft, tasty ham bread and drank hot water. Many infantry were so exhausted they couldn't even stand, collapsing asleep the moment they lay down. Knights were equally exhausted; many disregarded noble etiquette, sitting inelegantly on the ground, taking meat soup and eating the food handed to them.
Lake God Witch Mogiana also came to the frontline, immediately chanting a spell "Goddess Mist." The entire Sharp-Top Palace Castle was now enveloped in dense fog, slowing the advance of the undead.
Even with the aid of the Potion Chalice, Mogiana's magic power was nearly depleted as well. The Lake God Witch arrived beside Laine, using clear water to help him clean his armor, offering exquisite bacon and egg sandwiches, roasted chicken, and wine while calmly stating: "We may not last till tomorrow noon."
"Mathew Bade is clever." Laine nodded, his gaze turned towards his subordinates: "He knows we're exhausted."
Baron Devon Hex clutched his abdomen, injured, and if not for the Lake God Prophet's divine healing, he might have died already.
The young Flame Sun Knight Juan Carlos the Sunwatcher was also injured, gasping for breath, pale-faced leaning against a side, with bandages wrapped around his arm and thigh. Serving him, a peasant assisted him in eating food carefully.
Even Jerald, possessing legendary power, looked worn out, leaning against a wall, eating voraciously, drinking apple wine: "Damn undead! Lady curses you!"
