Chapter 201: The Marriage Certification Ceremony
Caster Town, Church Branch Office.
In a reception room, Leon and Father Auden sat on one side of a square table, while Viscount Arend and his daughter Adele sat opposite them. A Church notary sat at the side of the square table, with various materials spread across the table.
Adele was still intently staring at several documents in her hands, examining the clauses line by line. The other four people had already become idle, either resting their hands on the table or crossing their arms, all waiting for Adele to finish handling her own signature.
After quite some time, Father Auden sighed and could not help but speak, “Miss Adele, you have already been reading for a long time. We still have procedures to go through next. If possible, could you please consider everyone’s time a little?”
Marriage registration for ordinary people was still very convenient, but Viscount Arend could barely be considered a noble with a territory, while Leon was a formally appointed member holding a rank within the Church. This marriage also involved the inheritance and transfer of the title, so the procedures were numerous. Just completing the marriage registration alone had already kept them here for half a day.
“Wait a moment. Let me finish reading!” Adele continued without even raising her eyelids.
She was not deliberately wasting time. She was seriously checking whether there were any problems with the clauses involving the transfer of the title.
After several rounds of discussion, she had ultimately agreed to Leon’s conditions and come here to register their marriage with him. After all, in reality, she had no other choice.
However, she still had to clearly examine the clauses. If Leon, Father Auden, and the Church notary had tampered with anything in the agreement, she could not expect anything from her foolish father, who was currently standing beside them with his arms crossed and feet raised, finally relieved that his debts had been resolved.
“By the way, before this, I borrowed a sum of money from... Mr. Leon.” Adele stumbled slightly while saying this unfamiliar form of address, “Then, after marriage, how will it be calculated? Will it still follow the original contract?”
When she asked this question, she first glanced at the notary, then looked at Leon.
She actually knew the relevant regulations. After registration, the lending relationship between husband and wife could still continue. It was very common among many noble families for wives to represent their maternal families in borrowing money from their husbands’ families, but this matter still required asking for Leon’s opinion.
“Borrowed money? Why don’t I know about this sum?” Viscount Arend widened his eyes.
“The money was under my name. I borrowed it under my own identity.” Adele coldly glared back at her father.
Of course, she would not dare borrow money under the family’s name. Borrowing under the family’s name would require asking her father, and the money would also fall under her father’s control, after which she had no idea where it would be spent.
“Miss Adele, you should have mentioned this earlier.” Father Auden frowned.
“It seems we have to put this aside for a moment today. If there was a lending relationship before marriage, it must be included in the property notarization. We need to first confirm where that loan went...” The notary also sighed and explained to everyone.
“I have already prepared all the documents. They are here.” Adele suddenly took out a stack of documents from her bag and handed them to the notary.
The notary accepted them somewhat unexpectedly and looked through them twice. “Thank goodness, Miss Lovelace, you already had professionals handle this? Then it seems there should be no problem.”
These documents had been handled in an orderly manner and were clear at a glance. Even the people working here might not necessarily be able to organize the information this beautifully.
“I organized them myself.” Adele replied.
“Eh, you successfully won the popular No. 36 stall in the Port Market before? And only spent one hundred thousand?” The notary suddenly said after checking halfway through. “I have a friend who had also taken an interest in that location before. He had prepared quite a lot of funds.”
“There is a friend of my grandfather’s in the Port Market. I found a buyer for the dry goods in advance for fifty percent of our goods, then transferred part of the stall rights to that buyer for use. The other party was also my grandfather’s friend, so the negotiations went relatively smoothly.” Adele said.
“Impressive. It seems you will be able to help your husband quite a lot in the future.” The notary flattered her.
Although it was a compliment, it was not entirely insincere. The notary had also met many businessmen here, including Adele’s grandfather, Old Viscount Arend. He knew that the old man was quite capable as a merchant. It seemed that although the current generation of Viscount Arend was already incapable, Miss Adele had still inherited some of the old viscount’s abilities.
At this moment, Father Auden suddenly spoke, “Hmm, as a small investment, it was indeed handled quite beautifully. Mr. Set is truly fortunate. Not to mention, Mr. Set also has his own professional team beside him, so there is no need for his wife to work too hard.”
Adele glanced at Father Auden and restrained the urge to frown. She could tell that Father Auden was mocking her for using Leon’s money for a mere small-scale business.
Father Auden looked back at her without any hesitation, and their gazes seemed to clash.
“Then, this loan will continue after marriage under Miss Lovelace’s personal name according to the original contract. Is that acceptable?” The notary turned to confirm with Leon.
“That is fine.” Leon did not care about this.
“Then, Miss Lovelace, have you finished reading the agreement?” The notary asked Adele again.
Finally, Adele put down the agreement, let out a long breath, and picked up the pen, preparing to sign the agreement.
Before signing, she paused slightly, then raised her head and looked at the man sitting opposite her who was about to become her husband.
However, Leon’s gaze was not on her. He lowered his eyes and pondered on his own, as if thinking about the various plans he needed to make after completing this procedure.
Leon knew Adele would sign sooner or later, so he did not care what kind of reaction Adele would have when signing.
Adele could not help but recall Leon’s attitude when he had bluntly said before that he did not like her. She was now fairly certain of one thing: Leon Set truly seemed to have no interest in her. He merely regarded her as a tool for obtaining the title. Her beauty, which caused many men to covet her, seemed to have little value in this man’s eyes. As for her personal abilities, he did not seem to care much either.
For Adele, this should actually count as a good thing. At least this proved that the “fake marriage” Leon spoke of should be real. Even after registering the marriage, becoming her lawful husband, and controlling everything about her in terms of actual power, this man most likely had no intention of touching her.
Up until now, the majority of men she had encountered could only see the value of her appearance. Those straightforwardly lustful gazes made her extremely disgusted. Now, a young man had finally appeared, someone who was about to become her husband, who would not look at her that way, yet he still showed no concern for her in other aspects.
For some reason, this instead gave her an inexplicable sense of unwillingness.
When she had mentioned the business situation regarding the five hundred thousand loan earlier, she had actually hoped Leon would at least give some evaluation. However, Leon seemed to have no concern even for the five hundred thousand he had lent out. Sometimes people were like this: the more they were looked down upon by someone, the more they wanted that person to view them differently.
Adele did not know that Leon truly had no time to consider the mere issue of five hundred thousand right now. What he had to consider was establishing the charity foundation Johnny required within two months.
That foundation needed to regularly provide relief funds to the families of Johnny’s brothers who had died in battle ten years ago. The total expenses would not be small, and the required reserve amount would also be very high. According to Father Auden’s rough calculations, within these two months, he had to find a way to inject roughly ten million through normal investment channels to get the foundation operating. Father Auden had bluntly said that such a sudden arrangement was not an easy matter for him either.
They not only had to clean ten million within two months, but afterward they also had to expand the income and money laundering scale to more than fifty million per year, so they could afford to have Johnny cooperate with them long-term. They simply had no time to care about Adele and that mere five hundred thousand.
Adele finally finished signing, and they quickly completed the remaining registration procedures.
Finally, the notary put away all the procedural documents and asked, “Then where do you plan to hold the ceremony?”
“There is no need to make it so troublesome. We can just finish the process today.” Leon directly replied.
“I see.” The notary was not surprised. He knew there were some special circumstances with Viscount Arend’s family. “Then next, you only need to go through the marriage certification process. Do you need to designate a presiding person?”
“No need to make it so troublesome. I will do it.” Father Auden stood up and said, adjusting the robe on his body. “I am, after all, a priest of the Prophet Church. Inquisitor Set is a formally appointed member of the Prophet Church, so it is only right to have someone from the Prophet Church preside.”
“In that case, it is indeed much more convenient.” The notary looked toward Leon and Adele. “The two newlyweds should have no objections either, right?”
“I have no objections.” Leon said.
“I have no objections either...” Adele said against her will, sighing deeply in her heart.
Having lived until now, she had truly never imagined that she would welcome her marriage in such a manner. Her husband was the man she considered the most terrifying person in her life, and even the priest presiding over the marriage certification process was also the priest she hated the most.
Several minutes later, they moved into the hall and began the marriage certification process. Father Auden stood before the altar, holding the Holy Scriptures, and asked aloud, “The Supreme God witnesses here. Who will entrust the bride to the groom?”
Viscount Arend was just about to speak. This part of the ceremony should have been where he, as the father, accompanied Adele forward.
But at this moment, Adele suddenly interrupted, “Skip this part.”
This procedure was not mandatory. After all, not everyone had a father. Her marriage with Leon was, in plain terms, her own handling of the family’s debts. Her father had done nothing except drag her down. If possible, she would rather consider her father dead during this ceremony.
Viscount Arend shrugged and did not raise any objections.
Father Auden also had no interest in adding extra procedures. He said to the two newlyweds, “Then stand properly.”
After the two stood facing each other, Father Auden first looked at Leon.
“Leon Set, do you swear before the great Prophet that you are willing to marry Miss Adele Lovelace as your wife, become a member of their family, and throughout the years you spend together, whether in prosperity or adversity, whether in health or illness, always protect her without change?”
“I am willing.” Leon answered expressionlessly.
“Miss Adele Lovelace, are you willing to marry Mr. Leon Set, accept him as a member of your family, and whether in joy or sorrow, wealth or poverty, continue to support him as always?”
“I am willing.” Adele answered against her will.
“Then I have witnessed that you have made your vows under God’s blessing. In the name of the acting representative, I announce that you are officially married! Uh...” The priest hesitated after saying this and glanced at Leon.
Adele immediately became nervous. According to the procedure, there should have been a kissing ceremony here. If Leon said he wanted to proceed with this step, she had no way to refuse.
However, Leon shook his head at the priest without the slightest hesitation. The priest understood and skipped this step, nodding. “Alright, that is enough.”
Leon nodded and said to the priest, “Now handle the title registration.”
Adele felt slightly relieved in her heart, then quietly glanced at Leon. Leon had not noticed her at all.
If that procedure had really happened, she would probably have felt uncomfortable for several days. In this regard alone, she was still somewhat grateful to Leon.
However... he was not even interested in taking advantage of this opportunity. In this man’s eyes, was she really that lacking in charm?
