Chapter 150 Verra Tea: The Perfect Blend
The back kitchen of Didi Cafe was small, but it was organized and exceptionally clean.
Mia had cleared off the stainless steel counter to create a makeshift workstation. She carefully laid out the bags of raw supplies Veyra had brought over, lining up tapioca pearls, milk powders, whole tea leaves, specialized syrups, and various flavorings.
Holding the leather notebook open with one hand, she checked every item off against the written list. Her finger moved steadily down the page, her lips moving silently as she counted off the ingredients one by one.
When she finished, she looked up with bright, energetic eyes. "The inventory matches the list perfectly," Mia reported enthusiastically. "We actually have enough right here to mix eight of the fifteen recipes right now."
Veyra raised her eyebrows slightly. "Only eight?"
"The remaining seven drinks call for specialized ingredients we don’t have on hand," Mia explained, pointing her pen at the recipe notes. "We still need fresh taro paste, dark brown sugar syrup, a very specific grade of jasmine tea leaves, and a couple of distinct fruit extracts."
Veyra nodded in understanding, pulling out a small pen from her coat. "Write down everything we are missing. I’ll have Leon send someone out to track them down."
Mia grabbed a blank pad of paper and began scribbling rapidly. Her handwriting was small, neat, and surprisingly precise. She tore the sheet off the pad and handed it straight to Veyra.
Stepping toward the kitchen doorway, Veyra passed the paper over to Leon Wei, who was standing guard near the frame like a shadow.
"Can you have someone pick these specific items up for us?" she asked.
Leon glanced down at the handwritten list, scanning the items briefly. "I will handle the errand personally," he said in his usual calm, flat tone. Without another word, he turned and headed out toward the cafe exit.
Veyra walked back to the prep counter, turning her attention to Mia. "So, what about those first eight drinks?"
A confident grin broke across Mia’s face. "Let’s start brewing."
They began with the classic house milk tea, using it as their baseline test.
Mia carefully weighed out the loose black tea leaves on a small digital scale while Veyra monitored the water temperature on the burner. Once the water hit the exact degree specified in the notebook, they steeped the leaves together, letting the bold, rich aroma fill the quiet kitchen.
They measured out the milk, adjusted the sugar ratio, added a scoop of ice, and poured the mixture into a stainless steel shaker. Together, they rattled the shaker back and forth until the metal turned frosty cold.
Mia popped the cap and poured the rich liquid into a clear glass. The color was stunning, a deep, rich amber tone topped with a light layer of foam.
She slid the glass across the counter to Veyra. "You do the honors."
Veyra lifted the glass and took a slow sip, letting the tea sit on her tongue for a second before swallowing. Her eyes drifted shut. The flavor profile was incredibly smooth and well-balanced, carrying the robust depth of the tea leaves alongside the creamy dairy, perfectly sweet without feeling heavy.
She opened her eyes, meeting Mia’s expectant gaze. "This is it," Veyra said softly. "This is exactly how it should taste."
Mia grinned, rolling up her sleeves. "Awesome. Let me prep the next batch."
Over the next two hours, the kitchen turned into a full-scale test lab. They brewed and assembled all eight distinct variations step by step: the classic black milk tea, a dark brown sugar boba, a smooth taro mix, a rich matcha latte, a light honey lemon brew, a peach oolong, a fresh strawberry milk, and a bold Thai tea blend.
Each cup offered a completely different profile, but every single one smelled incredible.
Before long, the stainless steel counter was crowded with colorful glass cups. Faint steam rose from the warm concoctions, while cold condensation dripped down the sides of the chilled iced teas.
Mia took her time tasting a small sip from every single glass, her face shifting through a rapid series of expressions, surprise, intense focus, absolute delight, and strong approval.
Setting down her spoon after the final sample, she looked at Veyra with utter conviction. "These are honestly perfect, Veyra. No tweaks, no adjustments. They are ready for customers right now."
Veyra smiled, feeling a quiet sense of relief. "That is great news."
As the afternoon light faded into early evening, the cafe grew completely quiet. The test cups were emptied, the counters wiped down until they sparkled, and the leftover ingredients neatly stored in airtight containers.
Veyra wiped her hands on a towel and grabbed her leather bag, preparing to head out for the evening.
"Wait a second," Mia called out, leaning against the counter. "What are we actually going to call the shop?"
Veyra stopped in her tracks, blinking. "The name?"
"Yeah, we need an official brand name," Mia said, tapping her chin. "Something memorable and premium."
Veyra stood quietly for a moment, realizing she had been so focused on the logistics, funding, and compound ratios that she hadn’t given the actual store name a single thought.
"Do you have any ideas in mind?" Veyra asked.
Mia sighed, shaking her head. "I’ve been running names through my head all afternoon while we were brewing, but nothing really landed right."
Before they could continue brainstorming, the kitchen door swung open with a light creak.
Megan Clark stepped inside, carrying a small paper bag from her mother’s bakery. "Hi everyone!" Megan greeted warmly, her eyes crinkling. "My mom wanted me to bring over a few fresh warm cookies for you guys."
Veyra turned around, a soft smile on her face. "Megan, thank you. What a nice surprise."
Megan set the bag on the clean counter, but her eyes immediately dropped to the row of empty sample glasses and measuring tools. "Woah, what were you guys working on in here?"
"Milk tea recipes," Mia answered with a tired chuckle. "Lots and lots of milk tea."
Megan’s face lit up with instant curiosity. "Wait, really? Can I try some?"
Veyra looked over at Mia, who gave a light shrug.
"Actually, having a fresh palate would be really helpful," Veyra noted, turning back to Megan. "Mia and I have been tasting tea for hours, so our tastebuds are completely numb. We need an unbiased opinion."
Megan’s eyes brightened with excitement. "I would love to help!"
"Take a seat right here," Veyra said, pulling out a stool. "You are officially our head quality tester."
Mia quickly poured small, fresh sample shots of all eight drinks, lining them up in front of Megan.
Megan started with the classic milk tea, taking a careful sip. The second the flavor hit her, her eyes went wide. "Oh wow," she gasped, looking up. "That is so smooth!"
Next, she tried the brown sugar boba sample. "This is insanely good. The syrup flavor isn’t harsh at all."
Then came the taro blend. "I usually hate artificial taro, but this tastes real. I’ve never had anything like this before."
Moving on to the matcha latte, she took a test sip and nodded in surprise. "I am normally not a matcha person at all, but this balance is amazing."
She worked her way through the remaining four cups without stopping, her face a mix of pure joy and absolute disbelief.
Setting down the final sample cup, Megan wiped her lips with a paper napkin. "You guys... these are incredible," she said earnestly. "Every single drink is genuinely amazing."
Mia beamed with pride. "We are planning to put every single one of them on the launch menu."
Megan nodded her head vigorously. "You definitely should! People are going to line up around the block for these."
Setting her hands on her knees, Megan glanced back and forth between Veyra and Mia. "So, do you guys have the store name picked out yet?"
Veyra shook her head slightly. "Not yet. We were actually just trying to figure that out before you walked in. Do you have any suggestions?"
Megan went quiet for a few seconds, leaning her head back as she thought about it. Suddenly, a bright spark lit up her eyes.
"What about ’Verra Tea’?" Megan suggested.
Veyra blinked, testing the sound in her head. "Verra Tea?"
"Think about it," Megan explained, gesturing with her hands. "It combines both of your names together! The ’Ver’ comes from Veyra, and the ’ra’ comes from Mia. It sounds short, elegant, and really catchy."
Veyra’s eyes widened slightly as the simplicity of the idea hit her.
Mia sat frozen for a second, her mouth slightly open. "That is... actually brilliant," Mia whispered, a massive smile breaking across her face.
Veyra nodded her head in slow, complete agreement. "Verra Tea. It sounds refined and high-end, exactly like the elevated image we want to build near the university."
She turned her head to look at her business partner. "What do you think, Mia?"
Mia grinned broadly, her eyes shining with excitement. "I absolutely love it."
Veyra extended her hand across the stainless steel counter. "Then it’s officially settled. Our business is named Verra Tea."
Mia reached out and shook her hand firmly. "It’s perfect, partner."
