Chapter 1294: What Happened to the Power of Bonds?

In the presence of his good friend, Zhou Tian was willing to offer a few more words of explanation. “Although genetic technology allows me to control my cells and preserve my youth, it cannot affect my mindset.”

As he spoke, his face shifted continuously, as though covered in a layer of clay. His appearance changed from that of a young boy to a young man, then to middle age and old age, before finally returning to that of a young boy. As the Chairman of the Supreme Society, he possessed the highest level of genetic technology.

“The longer one lives, the more one’s mindset resembles that of an elderly person with one foot in the grave. Such a state of mind is neither conducive to living nor to scientific research. Furthermore, I discovered that constantly stimulating the brain keeps the mind perpetually active.

“Lan Hai, you don’t even have the strength to truss a chicken. Why get involved in something like this? Considering our friendship, I’m willing to let you go.”

Lan Hai was tempted. He knew Zhou Tian better than anyone. When Zhou Tian adopted this demeanor, it meant he was confident of victory; their resistance was futile.

Surrender may be a wise choice. It could save my life. With that thought, Lan Hai pointed at Lu Yang and the others. “What about them? Can you let them go?”

Zhou Tian shook his head.

Lan Hai silently raised his grenade launcher.

“Attack.” Zhou Tian made a hand gesture like a lion commanding countless lions to charge with a single roar. The eight Class-A warriors closed in, striking with lethal speed.

“Zhou Tian, you forced my hand!” Lan Hai aimed at Zhou Tian and prepared to fire.

One of the Class-A warriors opened his mouth and unleashed a silent sonic attack. It was an infrasonic wave, inaudible to humans, yet capable of disrupting bodily functions.

Lan Hai retched in disgust, collapsing to the ground, incapacitated.

Since Mi Xue’er was a genetic warrior and Yu Ran’s body was mostly mechanical, neither of them was affected.

Lu Yang felt that pretending to gag would tarnish his image, so he decided to tough it out through sheer willpower.

Besieged by the eight Class-A warriors, Mi Xue’er and Yu Ran soon found themselves at a disadvantage.

Mi Xue’er grabbed Lan Hai’s grenade launcher and fired two rounds at Zhou Tian, who was watching from the sidelines. He tilted his head to dodge without even moving his body.

The grenades exploded against the icy walls but didn’t leave so much as a hairline crack. The cold storage was terrifyingly durable.

“Mi Xue'er, opposing the Supreme Society leads only to death!” The lead Class-A warrior’s eyes blazed red. As robust as a black bear, he possessed boundless strength. Mechanical humans were like paper before him.

Mi Xue’er could barely hold her ground. Every exchange left her arms numb from the impact. Fortunately, her remarkable regenerative abilities prevented her from being defeated outright. “Think you’ve got me cornered?!”

She put some distance between them. Pulling out bottle after bottle from her waist, she hurled them at the Class-A warrior.

The bottles shattered, and the Class-A warrior let out a blood-curdling scream before collapsing in convulsions. The remaining warriors recoiled in fear.

“What is that?”

“An anti-gene agent?” Zhou Tian raised an eyebrow. No wonder Mi Xue’er dared to barge in here. So it’s because she had synthesized this.

With the anti-gene agent in hand, the tide of the battle turned instantly. Mi Xue’er hurled vial after vial, and every Class-A warrior she struck shrieked in agony, unable to move.

In just a few breaths, three more Class-A warriors fell.

“Zhou Tian, just surrender!” Mi Xue’er grew stronger the more she fought. An almost imperceptible aura emanated from her.

Zhou Tian remained unflustered. He produced a remote control and pressed a red button. The overhead sprinklers released a strange liquid.

Mi Xue’er turned deathly pale. This is also an anti-gene agent!

She tried to flee, but it was too late. The anti-gene agent drenched her, and she felt as though she had been dropped into a bucket of acid. Agony wracked her, and her power gradually faded as the very genes that made her strong unraveled.

Naturally, Zhou Tian still intended to use Mi Xue’er for experiments, so he had adjusted the concentration of the anti-gene agent to be non-lethal.

“Xue’er-meimei,[1] are you okay?!” Yu Ran shook Mi Xue’er frantically, desperately trying to wipe the agent off with her clothes.

However, the anti-gene agent had already seeped into her body. Wiping the agent off was futile. Mi Xue’er couldn’t answer. She only writhed on the ground, howling in pain.

“Go, capture them all! They’ll all be used for experiments,” Zhou Tian ordered the remaining Class-A warriors to charge at Lu Yang and the others.

“No, don’t!” Mi Xue’er’s last shred of consciousness heard Zhou Tian’s command and murmured weakly.

She’d grown up in a cold laboratory. Grandpa Doctor, the only person who had ever given me warmth, is dead. Now that I have finally found companions, how can I let them fall into danger?!

But the anti-gene agent had stripped away her power. She couldn’t even stand. Through her blurred, hazy vision, she watched helplessly as her companions were captured one by one, her heart burning with anxiety.

Get up! I must get up and save them!

Thump! Thump! Thump!

A powerful heartbeat resounded through the cold storage. It wasn’t fast, yet each beat reverberated throughout the entire place.

“What’s happening?!” Zhou Tian had been assured of his victory, but he could no longer sit still. Something unexpected was happening to Mi Xue’er.

Mi Xue’er slowly rose to her feet. Rather than getting up on her own, it was as though she was pulled upright by some mysterious force, like a marionette on strings. Her golden hair billowed like golden waves, and her eyes turned a savage crimson. The air around her distorted, and extreme frost shrouded her, colder than the cold storage.

“Don’t you dare hurt my friends!” she let out a low growl.

The Class-A warriors involuntarily released their grip and fell to their knees in submission. Their genetic modification technology all originated from the research conducted on Mi Xue’er. If the frozen corpse in the cold storage was Mi Xue’er’s origin, then she was their origin. This was the suppression of a higher living being over lower ones. It was unassailable; anyone who defied it would die.

“Genetic evolution?” Zhou Tian was overjoyed. Mi Xue’er’s condition perfectly matched the theory of genetic evolution.

“Her bloodline has awakened,” Lu Yang remarked at the sight. Normally, this would have been a long process, but under the combined pressure of the anti-gene agent and her desperate desire to save her friends, the process had been drastically accelerated.

Lu Yang found the Supreme Society laughable. They claim to believe in the power of the human body, yet they made Mi Xue’er their number one test subject. Mi Xue’er is so powerful simply because her bloodline is impure, mixed with that of ancient great demons.

However, Lu Yang found it peculiar that Mi Xue’er seemed to possess the bloodline of two ancient great demons.

“Are you alright?” Lu Yang pulled Lan Hai and Yu Ran to their feet. Neither had been genetically modified, so they were unaffected by Mi Xue’er.

Ignoring the prostrate Class-A warriors, Mi Xue’er walked straight toward Zhou Tian.

Zhou Tian tossed a high-concentration anti-gene agent at her in a last-ditch attempt to subdue her, but before it could reach her, it froze into ice crystals and shattered upon hitting the ground.

“What?!” Mi Xue’er’s transformation completely upended his understanding. You can even call this a superhuman ability! This is unscientific!

Mi Xue’er raised her hand and swatted Zhou Tian into an icy wall, causing him to bleed profusely. Just as she prepared to finish him off, she stumbled. Her consciousness was yanked away, drifting toward the depths of the cold storage.

Something there seemed to be calling out to her.

Is this the source of my power?

The depths of the cold storage were pitch-black. During the battle, they hadn’t been able to see what lay frozen there. Only now did Mi Xue’er realize what it was. It was a pure white rabbit, indistinguishable from any pet rabbit sold in the market.

“A Jade Rabbit from the ancient era,” Lu Yang mumbled.

Mi Xue’er’s consciousness was involuntarily drawn into the rabbit’s corpse. The moment she entered, countless thoughts flooded into her mind. Darkness, cold, and an overwhelming tide of negative emotions engulfed her consciousness.

Wh-What is this? Mi Xue’er felt herself merging with the rabbit, but the rabbit’s negative emotions were also corroding her. During this process, the Jade Rabbit’s corpse slowly opened its blood-red eyes. It exuded merely a sliver of its former oppressive pressure, but that alone was enough to drive Zhou Tian’s ribs through his lungs.

No. I can’t let myself be eroded. A wisp of its power was already capable of crushing Zhou Tian to death. My companions must also be in danger. If the negative emotions overtake me, my comrades will be as good as dead.

Mi Xue’er’s benevolent consciousness warred against the negative emotions; the two sides locked in a fierce struggle. She looked at Lu Yang and the others. She believed that as she fought her inner battle, her companions had to be suffering as well. Surely the power of our bonds will tide us through this crisis.

Then she saw that Lu Yang and the others were completely unaffected by her condition.

A question mark popped into her head.

In that instant, the negative emotions seized control of Mi Xue’er’s consciousness.
