Chapter 87 - 82: Rubbernecking into the Police Station
Everyone loves a good spectacle. It’s human nature to be curious about the unknown, about something everyone else is gathering to watch.
But few people are like the Chinese, who have the guts to push their way into any commotion and, if the moment is right, will even enthusiastically get involved.
Ultimately, they’ve been spoiled rotten by the safety of their country, every last one of them fearless.
In the back of their minds, they believe that if there’s any danger, police officers and soldiers will be there to shield them. If things go south, there’s always time to run.
Ni Bingyan pulled Peng Huan over, standing on her tiptoes at the edge of the crowd to peek inside. Being tall, she could at least make out the man and woman at the center of the conflict.
It was strange. A fight had broken out, yet neither of them was cursing the other out. It was completely bizarre.
The woman seemed very unstable. She was crying while hammering the man with her fists, one solid blow after another. Even from the edge of the crowd, Ni Bingyan could hear the thud of flesh on flesh, but the woman never uttered a single curse.
Peng Huan was shorter and couldn’t hear or see what was happening inside. She was dying of curiosity!
She asked Ni Bingyan, but Bingyan was just as clueless.
So she simply grabbed someone she knew from the crowd and asked, "Brother Li, what on earth is going on?"
"I just got off work myself, so I’m not sure. All I know is that woman is beating the hell out of that man. Hiss... she’s not holding back at all."
Peng Huan then turned to another person. "Sister Wu, what’s happening?"
This Sister Wu had arrived earlier and knew a bit more. "The two of them came stumbling out of that alley, already struggling. The one doing the hitting is crying her eyes out but won’t say a word. The one getting hit is just gritting his teeth, taking it without a peep, and trying to run. The woman’s got a death grip on him and won’t let go. It’s been almost half an hour, and nobody can figure out what’s going on. That’s why we’re all waiting to see what happens."
It was rare to see a spectacle like this. It felt anticlimactic, like biting into an unripe melon.
It was like a carrot dangling in front of the crowd. No one wanted to leave without getting the full story, so they all stood there, craning their necks.
No one knew the couple, and neither of them was calling for help. Fearing they might get caught in a scam, everyone just formed a circle and watched from a distance.
If it had been a man beating a woman in the street, someone would have likely rushed in without a second thought. But as it was, a man taking a beating? ’He probably did something to deserve it. Serves him right~’
Besides, when a woman was beating a man in public and he wasn’t fighting back, it was probably a domestic dispute. It’s always hard to get involved in family matters, which are usually tied to love and relationships. No one wanted to get dragged into that mess.
Seeing the situation for what it was, Ni Bingyan wanted to take Peng Huan’s arm and leave.
This kind of thing wasn’t exactly new, and there really wasn’t much to see. It was a rare chance to hang out with her friend; wasn’t anything better than standing in the cold wind on the street?
The Hanfu she was wearing looked beautiful, and she had thermal wear underneath, but it was still no match for the warmth of her big down jacket.
Peng Huan had wanted to keep watching, but when she felt how ice-cold Ni Bingyan’s hand was, she changed her mind.
"Let’s go. I know a place with great stewed soup. We can go grab some and warm up!"
"Okay, it is getting a little cold."
Ni Bingyan agreed with Peng Huan’s suggestion.
But just before they left, she noticed the woman, in between punches, repeatedly making a few gestures with her hands.
No one in the crowd knew sign language, so no one understood. But Ni Bingyan did.
"Sister Huanhuan, wait. There’s something wrong with that man. The woman is asking for someone to call the police."
"Huh? I didn’t hear anything!"
Ni Bingyan pulled her back to the curb. While dialing 110, she whispered, "That woman is mute; she can’t speak. The man did something bad and doesn’t want to cause a scene, he just wants to run. Didn’t you see how, even while hitting him, she’s kept one hand gripping him tightly?"
Without knowing the woman was asking for help, any bystander would just assume it was a couple’s quarrel.
’What wife, when beating her husband, wouldn’t hold on to him while she did it?’
But once she understood the woman’s sign language, the seemingly normal scene was suddenly full of holes.
The man was short and thin. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to run; he couldn’t get away. Though the mute woman couldn’t speak, she was strong and had a temper. When she flew into a rage, this was the result.
Peng Huan wanted to say she was too short to see clearly, but she decided against it. ’First things first.’
A few moments later, two police officers ran up, sweating profusely.
It turned out this was a pedestrian street, so their car couldn’t enter. After receiving the call, the police had to park at the intersection and run over, which caused the delay.
"Make way, make way! Police are here!"
"Stop! Both of you, stop! Let’s talk this out calmly!"
It seemed someone had already called the police.
Worried the police wouldn’t understand sign language and that the woman would get anxious trying to explain, Ni Bingyan put her phone away and ran over.
"Officers, that lady is deaf and mute. She’s been asking for help. I was just about to call the police when I saw you arrive."
The officers had just separated the two when the man, suddenly free, bolted. The mute woman furiously tried to chase him, but the two officers had already tackled him and dragged him back.
The woman’s face was flushed with anxiety as she gestured frantically. The two officers were in a tough spot—they couldn’t understand what she was saying. Just as they were wondering what to do, they saw Ni Bingyan step forward, so they quickly beckoned her over.
"Ma’am, could we trouble you to come with us to the station to help out?"
"Ah! Ah!"
The woman could only make low, hoarse sounds, her hands moving nonstop as she pleaded with Ni Bingyan to help translate.
Assisting the police with an investigation is every citizen’s duty.
Ni Bingyan sighed helplessly. She had no choice but to go with Peng Huan to the nearby police station.
The man was still struggling on the way, trying to break free and run, so the police simply cuffed his hands behind his back.
Of course, the situation was still unclear, so the woman, as the one who had been throwing punches, was also taken into custody.
Ni Bingyan was dressed beautifully today and was already eye-catching. Now, walking with this group, still some distance from the police car, she drew a lot of stares. Some people even raised their cameras to take pictures of her. It was then she realized she should call Sister Wei to prevent any trouble.
"You went to watch a commotion and ended up at the police station?"
When Wei Shuojie answered the phone, she was completely stunned.
"I didn’t do anything wrong. The police don’t know sign language and wanted me to help."
The mute woman was agitated, and they didn’t know if she could read or write. The police were just trying to be prepared.
"Didn’t you say you were going back to your hometown? What are you doing in Hengdian? That place is crawling with paparazzi! If you go to the station with them, someone’s definitely going to make up a crazy story!"
Wei Shuojie was fuming.
But since it had happened and they had asked for her help, she couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.
A million thoughts raced through her mind before she pinpointed the real question. "Wait, since when do you know sign language? I don’t remember that being on your profile."
"Huh? It’s not? I guess I’ve been too modest. You don’t know me well enough."
’The original owner of this body knew some things that I didn’t, but I gained them after receiving her memories. And there were things I knew that she never did. Of course the information Wei Shuojie had was incomplete.’
"Stop messing around! Just go help them for now. You’re doing a good deed. I’ll handle the aftermath."
"Okay."
The police station wasn’t far. Just after she hung up, the group arrived.
"Put them both in interrogation rooms. We’ll question them separately. Let’s not waste the lady’s time; we’ll start with the woman."
The man was led away. Once the mute woman’s hands were free, she excitedly signed a long string of words, then looked at Ni Bingyan with anticipation.
