Chapter 99 - 90: Arrival of the Giant Catfish, a Peculiar State
Zhong Fang wasted no time and got straight to the point.
"Brother, I went to the equipment room for the tug-of-war ropes you asked for as soon as I got back yesterday, but they’d all been taken by the students who looted supplies at the beginning."
"I have no idea what they’re using them for. Even the shuttlecocks and basketballs were gone. The room was completely empty. I was stunned when I saw it!"
"Luckily, I had my men ask around and found out who had some of the ropes, so I took them with me to trade for them."
"That stuff is basically useless to whoever took it, probably just collecting dust in their dorms. I managed to trade for them with just a little over ten pounds of cured fish..."
Two of his men walked over and threw a few burlap sacks on the ground. Inside were the tug-of-war ropes.
A smile spread across Chen Chong’s face as he looked at the tug-of-war ropes, which were thicker than his arm.
’These ropes are going to be incredibly useful...’
Zhong Fang added, "But, brother, I only managed to get seven ropes back. For the rest, we either couldn’t find out who took them, or the owners weren’t willing to trade."
"But brother, if you don’t think seven is enough, just say the word. As long as it gives us a better chance of killing that Giant Catfish, I’ll take my men and go snatch a few more, even if we have to rob them!"
"Seven?" Chen Chong pulled out one of the tug-of-war ropes to examine it. "That should be enough."
The school’s tug-of-war ropes were competition-grade. Their strength and durability looked impressive, and each one was 35 meters long.
One rope might not be enough to restrain the Unihorn Catfish, but seven used at once should be fine.
’Besides, even if we had more, where would we tie them?’
’The Unihorn Catfish isn’t like a land animal. It’s smooth all over. Other than its horn and tail, I can’t think of anywhere else to get a rope around it...’
...
After a trek of over an hour, the group finally arrived at the bank of the tributary.
The Vermilion Fruits and the tug-of-war ropes were ready.
The most suitable spot for restricting the Unihorn Catfish’s movements had also been thoroughly scouted.
Now, only the final step remained: luring out the Unihorn Catfish!
Looking at the group from the Fishing Club, Chen Chong frowned. He hadn’t really noticed before, but now that he looked... ’Why does it seem like there aren’t that many of them?’
"How many people are in your club?"
Zhong Fang replied, "Including me, fifty-seven in total."
"Fifty-seven?"
It wasn’t just Chen Chong who was surprised by this number; Zhang Meng was utterly dumbfounded.
This was because the Fishing Club had been one of the largest clubs in the entire school, with even more members than the former student council.
It was just that the ’transmigration’ had occurred in the middle of the night when many students weren’t on campus, so the Fishing Club’s ranks were incomplete.
But even so, the number of Fishing Club members who were transported here was initially close to one hundred. How could there be so few now...
Zhong Fang’s expression darkened, and his face was even tinged with hatred.
"Brother, do you know why I agreed so readily when you first mentioned killing the Giant Catfish?"
Chen Chong said, "Because you want revenge?"
"That’s right!"
Zhong Fang glanced at the club members behind him, took a deep breath, and said, "The Giant Catfish deliberately causes trouble and keeps us from fishing, but that alone isn’t enough to make us risk our lives to kill it."
"After all, if we can’t fish, we can find other ways to get food. A living person won’t just lie down and die over a small problem, right?"
"The real reason we want to kill it so badly is that more than thirty of our Fishing Club members—almost all of them—were eaten by that Giant Catfish!"
"They all say our club suffered the most casualties during that last bloody incident, but the Giant Eagle and the Blood Python only took a few of our people. The Giant Catfish is the one that ate the most!"
"Forget about me being the president; there isn’t a single member of this club who doesn’t want to kill that thing!"
"If we can really take it out, not only will we be able to fish in peace, but it would also be a way to honor the souls of our thirty-plus fallen members."
Zhang Meng, Xu Jun, and the others listened in silence.
They all knew the members of the Fishing Club were a tight-knit group.
After all, while other clubs mostly held their activities on campus, the Fishing Club often arranged off-campus fishing trips together. Their bond was naturally much closer than that of other clubs.
With more than thirty of their own eaten by the Unihorn Catfish, it was no wonder the members of the Fishing Club were so eager for this hunt...
...
「Half an hour later.」
"Brother, is this really going to work? Can we actually lure the Giant Catfish over?"
Zhong Fang asked with a doubtful expression, squatting under a tree on the tributary’s bank.
Squatting beside him, Chen Chong grabbed a Vermilion Fruit from a box and popped it into his mouth. He then shouted up to Xu Jun in the tree above, "Anything yet?"
Xu Jun was sprawled on a thick branch, a monocular telescope in his hand.
"Nothing yet, Brother Chong."
Chen Chong looked away and took another bite of the fruit.
"It has to work. We’ve prepared this much already. You’re not thinking of backing out now, are you?"
"Of course not," Zhong Fang said. "It’s just... you have my men stationed in the water, two every hundred meters. I’m just really on edge about it."
Looking down the tributary, the Fishing Club members were all standing in the water.
A pair of them was stationed nearly every hundred meters, stretching from deep within the tributary all the way to its mouth, so far that you couldn’t see the end of the line...
"What? On a hot day like this, you worried your brothers are going to catch a cold?" Xu Jun poked his head out from the tree.
Zhong Fang was at a loss for words. He turned back to Chen Chong. "Brother, I’m just worried the Giant Catfish will pop up out of nowhere, just like it did in the main river, and swallow them whole before they even have a chance to react..."
Chen Chong said casually, "Don’t worry, I’ve already considered that. That’s why I had them start entering the water where it’s only five meters deep."
"At that depth, you’ll see it coming even if it’s submerged. Besides, my own man is positioned at the very front. If something happens to him, the people behind him will see it. What are you so afraid of?"
Zhong Fang wanted to say something else, but he swallowed his words.
’Their team is small, but they put their own guy in the most dangerous spot first. That’s a huge show of good faith. If I keep hesitating, I’ll just look petty.’
’Hunting a behemoth like this is inherently risky. To put it bluntly, losing a few people is an acceptable risk.’
Zhong Fang had mentally prepared himself for this two days ago.
The two of them squatted under the tree, idly eating Vermilion Fruits to pass the time.
Before they knew it, another half hour had passed.
Just as Xu Jun, perched in the tree, was struggling to stay awake and about to doze off... something happened!
Ripples suddenly appeared on the calm surface of the water. Afraid his eyes were playing tricks on him, he quickly raised the monocular telescope to confirm.
A behemoth had appeared, sometime, at the junction of the main river and the tributary. A single horn jutted out from the water’s surface.
It was, without a doubt, the Unihorn Catfish!
"Brother Chong, it’s here!"
At his words, Chen Chong and Zhong Fang immediately shot to their feet.
"Where is it?"
Xu Jun replied as he watched, "It’s entered the tributary! It’s still a few hundred meters from Wang Biao... Why isn’t he getting out? The Giant Catfish is almost on top of him..."
"Wang Biao’s on shore! He threw the Vermilion Fruit in his hand, and now he’s running in our direction with the Giant Catfish in pursuit!"
"Brother Chong, you were right! The Giant Catfish really does eat anything! It swallowed the Vermilion Fruit in a single gulp!"
"It’s reached the Fishing Club guys! Holy shit, why are they scrambling out so fast? Weren’t they supposed to let it get closer before getting out? Dammit, the guys further back are climbing out even faster..."
Listening to Xu Jun’s running commentary, Chen Chong shot Zhong Fang an expressionless glance.
Zhong Fang looked embarrassed. "Can’t be helped. My guys are green. They must have gotten spooked."
Chen Chong turned away with a helpless sigh. As long as the Giant Catfish was still heading their way, it was fine. ’After all, not everyone is Wang Biao. I can’t expect too much from them...’
"Brother Chong, the Giant Catfish has passed more than thirty people! It must have covered a thousand meters by now! It’s eaten every single Vermilion Fruit, didn’t miss one! It’s almost at our position!"
"I see it!"
From his vantage point, Chen Chong could already see the Unihorn Catfish in the water not far away.
The terrain here was higher than the rest of the tributary. Though he couldn’t see as far as Xu Jun, he had a clear view of the Giant Catfish’s movements once it drew near, which was precisely why he had chosen this spot.
But as he watched the approaching Unihorn Catfish, Chen Chong felt that something was off.
"Ah Jun, give me the telescope."
"Catch!"
Chen Chong caught the telescope and focused it on the Unihorn Catfish.
The moment he saw it, his brows furrowed tightly...
"President Zhong, take a look."
"What is it?"
Zhong Fang took the telescope and looked through it.
His relatively calm expression changed dramatically. He whipped his head around to look at Chen Chong, his face a mask of disbelief.
"How did it turn into... this?!"
...
