Whole School Transmigrated: I Have 3 Daily Intel

Chapter 132 - 105: Hunting the Wild Boar! Running into Du Ming! You’re Not Dead Yet?

"That’s okay, I was just asking. By the way, if your sister comes back, remember to tell her that the rumor going around school about the Blood-tooth Python being near death is fake. She shouldn’t believe it."

"Oh, that? I know. I figured it was fake, too. Extraordinary Creatures don’t die that easily."

"Alright, in that case, I’ll head back for now. You can start using these seventy pounds of coarse salt. Barring any surprises, the remaining thirty pounds will be delivered tonight."

"Hold on, don’t leave just yet. Let me pay you first... You want some leopard meat?"

...

By the time Chen Chong returned to 701, he was carrying half a side of leopard meat, leg and skin still attached.

The moment he walked in the door, Xu Jun jumped in shock.

"The stuff from the Swordsmanship Club is incredible, huh? You guys even managed to hunt a leopard?"

"This large side of meat must be a hundred pounds or so, and it comes with half a leopard hide. We can still use it after we skin it later..."

After handing the leopard meat to Wang Biao, Chen Chong sat down on the sofa to rest.

Today’s plan was simple.

Once Zhang Meng returned, they would go to the desolate fields to collect any prey from their traps. Then, they would head to the scrublands to transplant some Vermilion Fruits and, while they were there, see if they could find the wild boar.

Tonight, he would check on the progress of the information exchange point at the Fishing Club, and he could also swing by the trading market.

It had been a long time since he’d been there, not since he’d traded for all those resources. Today was a good chance to see if he could find anything valuable...

"Brother Chong, are you saying we’re hunting wild boar today?"

"That’s right. If we don’t go hunt it now, the boar will probably leave the scrublands and go forage elsewhere."

Chen Chong vaguely recalled that several days had passed since they got the intel about the boar.

The report said it would stay in the scrublands for about a week. Barring any surprises, these next couple of days were their last chance. If they didn’t hunt it now, they would miss the opportunity.

They should have gone after it earlier, but hunting the Unihorn Catfish had caused a delay.

Wild boars had the highest meat yield of all the beasts in the jungle, and Chen Chong had no intention of letting such a prize slip away...

...

The time was approaching noon.

Chen Chong, Xu Jun, Wang Biao, Zhang Meng, Jia Wen, and Huang Mao—all six of them—arrived at the scrublands.

The Tiger Striped Dog trotted close by, its ears pricked and alert to any sound from the surrounding woods...

They had already checked the traps in the desolate fields.

Their luck today wasn’t as good as yesterday’s. The traps were empty, and the bird nets had only caught a few palm-sized birds, with no sign of any pheasants or wild ducks.

The fish traps, on the other hand, were a consistent success. Even though they only filled a third of the cage, they held over thirty pounds of fish.

The desolate fields and the scrublands were on opposite sides of the school, so to get to the scrublands, they first had to cut through the campus.

The group took the opportunity to head back, deposit their entire catch into the muddy fishpond, and then set out again, heading toward the scrublands on the other side...

"Sir, there are more signs of the boar. It must have been here this morning. It looks like it’s treating this patch of scrubland as its regular feeding ground."

"But it’s eaten most of the roots and berries here. It’ll probably leave in a day or two to find a new spot."

Wang Biao crouched down, deducing the exact time from nothing more than the faint tracks on the ground.

"So will it be back?" Chen Chong asked.

Wang Biao glanced up at the scorching sun. "If I’m right, the next time the boar shows up will be this evening, or maybe after dark."

"Why? How can you tell?" Xu Jun asked, puzzled.

Wang Biao smiled. "Wild boars are nocturnal. They don’t usually come out to forage when the sun is this high; they can’t stand the heat. Right now, it’s probably hiding in the shade, cooling off. It’ll only come out when the sun is less intense and the temperature drops."

"I see..."

"Sir, this gives us the perfect opportunity to build a trap. Based on the latest tracks it left, I’m afraid my previous estimate of five hundred pounds was wrong. This beast has to be at least six hundred pounds, maybe even more!"

"That big?"

This time it was Jia Wen’s turn to be shocked.

A three or four hundred-pound boar is already considered huge. A five-hundred-pounder is extremely rare, to say nothing of one over six hundred pounds.

A creature that massive could almost be called a boar king. Even a tiger would think twice before provoking it.

"That’s right. It might even be bigger," Wang Biao confirmed with another nod.

Honestly, he could hardly believe it himself, but the tracks on the ground didn’t lie.

"Wild boars are savage and aggressive, but if they truly sense mortal danger, they’ll turn and flee. Once they start running, they’re hard to stop."

"A boar this large will be impossible to catch without a good trap. We have to immobilize it..."

Chen Chong nodded slightly. "Alright, let’s start building the trap then."

He had a decent idea of how to hunt wild boar; he’d seen it done in documentaries.

Modern boar hunting typically involved shotguns and steel traps, but they obviously didn’t have access to those. They would have to resort to more primitive methods.

Dig a pit!

And use snares!

It would be just like when they hunted the Moose: dig a deep pit, cover it with branches and leaves, and bait it with berries.

Once the boar fell into the pit, it would be contained.

Boars lacked the incredible jumping ability of deer, but they were tough, thick-skinned, and incredibly tenacious.

Trying to kill it while it was just trapped in the pit would be a difficult and dangerous struggle.

They could stand over the pit and stab at its back with spears all day, leaving it a bloody mess, and still not manage to kill it.

But if they could snare its legs and pull it onto its side, its soft, vulnerable belly would be exposed.

Then, a single spear thrust would be all it took to finish the job...

Huang Mao opened his backpack and took out the tools he had brought.

Four iron shovels, three ropes.

Aside from one crude iron shovel, the rest had been swiped from the Fishing Club.

After killing the Unihorn Catfish, Chen Chong had noticed the Fishing Club’s tug-of-war rope was pretty sturdy and that they had plenty of shovels. He’d grabbed a few of each, and now they were coming in handy.

With iron shovels, digging the deep pit was easy.

In less than an hour, a pit six feet deep and ten feet wide had been dug.

After they covered it with a layer of scavenged branches, leaves, and a light sprinkling of dirt, the trap was completely invisible.

"The boar’s eaten almost everything around here. I could only find this handful of wild berries. Is this really enough to lure it in?"

Huang Mao held out a handful of unidentifiable gray berries; it was all he could find after searching the entire area.

He placed them on top of the covered pit, but there were so few that they were barely visible.

It would be a total waste if the boar had poor eyesight and missed them.

"If this isn’t enough, we have other options..."

Chen Chong’s gaze shifted toward the swamp.

The Forest Compendium clearly stated that Vermilion Fruits were a favorite among the birds and beasts of the jungle. He was sure the boar would be no exception.

The only reason it hadn’t eaten them already was that the swamp was too deep for it to cross. Otherwise, it would have charged in and devoured the entire Vermilion Fruit tree.

Coincidentally, one of their goals for coming to the scrublands was to transplant a few Vermilion Fruit plants anyway. They might as well go pick some now...

Soon, the group arrived at the edge of the swamp.

The Fierce Poisonous Bee hive still loomed in the distance.

Countless fist-sized Fierce Poisonous Bees swarmed around it, their finger-sized stingers enough to make one’s skin crawl.

Fortunately, as long as no one attacked the hive or strayed too close, the Fierce Poisonous Bees were docile.

Just as Chen Chong and his friends were about to take off their shoes and wade into the swamp to pick the fruit...

A rustling sound echoed from a slope a hundred meters away. Something was approaching. The group was instantly on alert.

The Tiger Striped Dog’s ears shot up, its gaze fixed on the path ahead.

As the sound drew nearer, a group of students came into view.

The two groups spotted each other at the same time...

For a moment, both sides froze.

Xu Jun shot to his feet, his eyes wide with surprise as he shouted.

"Du Ming?"

"You’re not dead yet!?"

...
