Chapter 58 - 56: Raising Poultry and Livestock, the Bathroom Is a Good Choice

SPLASH—

The mixed fish from two crates were all poured into the large plastic basin that had been freed up from curing meat.

Two empty plastic buckets were placed beside it.

The variety of mixed fish caught from the stream was too great. Some weren’t suitable for the pond, so they had to be sorted first to pick out the dead and injured ones.

Some carnivorous fish couldn’t be put in either.

The main goal of raising fish in the pond was to focus on herbivorous types like grass carp and filter-feeders like silver carp.

At most, they could add some omnivorous fish like crucian carp, common carp, and black carp.

Carnivorous fish that specifically preyed on smaller fish, like snakehead and catfish, were absolutely not to be put in.

Otherwise, the other small fish would have no chance of survival. They’d be eaten before they could grow, completely destroying the pond’s initial ecosystem.

In the future, if they got a higher-level, larger pond, maybe they could add a few to maintain the ecological balance.

But for now, it was definitely not an option...

"Wow, that’s a lot of fish," Xu Jun said with a sigh of admiration.

After pouring the fish from the crates into the larger basin, the view was much clearer. You could see almost every single fish.

"Wang Biao and I know the fish species, so we’ll be responsible for picking out the ones for the pond. The three of you just pick out the injured and dead fish, and put the miscellaneous catch like snails and loaches into the buckets."

"You got it, Brother Chong."

With that, the five of them gathered around the large plastic basin and began to sort.

The size of the fish trap’s entrance meant it couldn’t catch very large fish; two pounds was pretty much the limit.

Although they had caught over a hundred pounds of fish, most of them were finger-sized mixed fish. There were only about ten that were one or two pounds in size, and even the palm-sized crucian carp weren’t very numerous.

But Chen Chong wasn’t disappointed. After all, they weren’t relying on the fishpond for food right now. The main goal was to enrich the variety of fish species first.

Besides, apart from some mixed fish that would never grow large, many of the small fish were the fry of larger species.

As long as they were put in the pond and adapted to the environment, with the pond’s double-speed growth characteristic, they would have a continuous harvest of adult fish in the future...

"Sir, these two grass carp are beautiful. Even though they’re only about half a pound, they’ll definitely grow well in the pond."

"Brother Chong, look! This fish is huge, at least over two pounds. It must be the biggest one in the catch, right?"

"That’s a catfish; it’s a carnivore. Don’t put it in the pond. Toss it in the bucket, and we’ll cook it for dinner tonight."

"This one... can it go in the pond? Ah, it’s moving! I can barely hold on to it!"

"That’s a bream. It’s an herbivore like the grass carp. It’s a decent size, so toss it in the pond."

"There are so many snails! How did these things get into the fish trap?"

"Snails are also attracted to the foul smell of animal entrails. They probably crawled in during the night."

"My Lord, there are a few toads here, too. Should they go in the pond...?"

...

「About an hour later.」

"The fishpond is finally taking shape."

Staring at the pond, where fish would occasionally surface to eat plankton, Chen Chong looked gratified.

The large plastic basin was almost empty. All the fish suitable for the pond had been put in.

What remained in the buckets were either dead or severely injured fish, or carnivorous species.

Chen Chong had also put in some of the slightly injured fish that were suitable for the pond. As for whether they would survive, that was up to fate.

The haul this time was huge. A rough estimate showed that nearly half the fish could be put into the pond, and the variety was quite rich.

Grass carp, common carp, crucian carp, bream, black carp, silver carp, and so on...

Although most were palm-sized juveniles, they were still a new batch of members for the pond.

In addition to these main fish species, they also threw in some small mixed fish that wouldn’t grow large and they didn’t quite recognize, as well as live river shrimp and snails.

These could clean the algae in the pond, maintain water quality, and also become food for the omnivorous fish.

Chen Chong didn’t put in things like loaches, eels, frogs, or toads.

Although they could also improve the pond’s environment, there were too few of them, and they would be hard to catch once released. It was better to just treat them as food.

"Ew, I don’t eat frogs. Just looking at them gives me goosebumps." Xu Jun looked at the few frogs in the bucket with a disgusted expression.

Jia Wen laughed. "This is good stuff! If you won’t eat them, My Lord, then I will..."

"Besides these dead mixed fish and river shrimp, there are quite a few decent-sized fish we can eat. Let’s use them for dinner tonight."

Chen Chong hefted the two buckets. One was full of dead mixed fish, while the other contained carnivorous fish larger than his palm, as well as crucian carp and common carp that were too injured to be put in the pond...

The most eye-catching among them was the catfish. At a minimum of two pounds, it was arguably the biggest fish in the catch—enough for two people to have a meal.

"As for these dead mixed fish and river shrimp, let’s feed them to the wild duck. This alone will probably be enough to feed it for two days."

The group carried the basins, buckets, and fish crates out of the room.

The wild duck and the wild rabbit were still in the backpack on the floor. Their heads were sticking out, and they were eating the herbs Shen Xinrou had placed in front of them earlier.

They were clearly quite lively, much more energetic than when they were caught in the traps.

"Sir, Jia Wen and I will go make dinner," Wang Biao said, picking up the bucket filled with the live fish.

"Cook this wild rabbit as well."

Considering there were five people to feed, the live fish might not be enough, so Chen Chong also handed the dead wild rabbit from the bag to Wang Biao.

As for the other, living wild rabbit...

Chen Chong picked it up directly by its ears and tossed it into the animal cage next to the fishpond.

Upon entering the cage, the wild rabbit was terrified, huddling motionlessly in a corner.

Chen Chong wasn’t worried about this reaction.

Animals like wild rabbits are naturally timid. As long as it wasn’t injured, it would adapt once it got used to the new environment.

"Ah Jun, get the wild duck out. I need to clip its wing feathers first, or the enclosure won’t hold it. It’ll definitely fly all over the house."

Back in the living room, Chen Chong rummaged through a cabinet in the coffee table and pulled out a pair of scissors as he spoke.

Once a section of feathers at the end of the wild duck’s wings was clipped, it lost its ability to fly.

This was a common method for raising poultry. To prevent them from flying away and escaping, you either put a net over the enclosure or regularly trimmed their flight feathers. It didn’t actually harm them.

After untying the rope binding the wild duck, Xu Jun placed it in the enclosure next to the farmland.

The five-square-meter enclosure was more than enough space for the wild duck’s daily activities.

After some of the dead mixed fish were poured in, the wild duck immediately forgot its fear and began to eat.

"It’s adapting pretty well, huh," Xu Jun said, amused.

Watching the wild duck eat in its enclosure, Chen Chong fell into a thoughtful silence. After a long moment, he spoke:

"Don’t you think the bathroom would be more suitable for raising livestock and poultry?"

Xu Jun was taken aback. She thought for a few seconds, then nodded. "Now that you mention it... I guess so?"

Since they transmigrated, the bathroom had lost its original function. All waste from using the toilet was bagged up and thrown out.

Fortunately, the drain still worked, so they could still take showers.

But it seemed to have no other use beyond that.

Although the living room was large enough to accommodate various structures thanks to the Vacant Land Card’s enhancement, things like farmland were fine, but raising animals... that was pushing it.

For now, there was no smell, but who could say what would happen over time.

In the future, if they had more livestock and poultry, or even added large animals like wild boars and deer.

The smell would probably be even worse...

’They can’t possibly raise everything in the living room and bedrooms, can they?’

’Compared to putting animal enclosures in the living room, the bathroom—a separate space with a window—seemed far more suitable.’
