Chapter 77 - 75: Bloody Battle in the Jungle, Battling the Wolf Pack

"We’ve got a situation!"

The wolf’s howl and other strange sounds immediately put everyone on high alert.

Chen Chong swung his Refined Iron shield off his back, holding it across his chest. He drew the dagger from his waist with his other hand in a forward grip.

Jia Wen shook out his arms to loosen up, then slowly drew his gleaming, polished greatsword.

Xu Jun, carrying a Fire Axe, stayed close by Chen Chong’s side.

Wang Biao gripped his long spear tightly, his other hand resting on his longbow.

By holding both weapons, he could switch between them in an instant to make the most appropriate response in an emergency.

He could kill with his spear up close or fire his bow from a distance.

Zhang Meng held a black, carbonized ironwood axe.

Xu Jun had given it to him at noon, seeing that he was unarmed.

After all, Xu Jun had the tougher Fire Axe, so keeping a wooden axe that had dropped from a D-Class Card was useless. He figured it was better to let someone else use it.

The axe was made from an extremely hard wood, and its hardness had been significantly increased through carbonization.

It might not have been as good as an iron axe, but it could still easily split skin and sunder flesh.

Huang Mao didn’t have a decent weapon, but he was carrying an iron pipe he’d gotten from somewhere.

Over a meter long, it still held a good deal of intimidating power in his hands...

"Hu Zi!"

WOOF!

"Go!"

With a toss of its head, the Tiger Striped Dog charged straight into the dense forest ahead. It was so fast that it disappeared into the undergrowth in the blink of an eye.

Chen Chong and the other five quickly followed, plunging into the vision-obscuring thicket...

More and more bloodstains appeared on the ground.

They came across the corpses of two more Fear Wolves.

Shreds of cloth, like torn clothing, were scattered on the ground.

’Are the people who fought these Fear Wolves from the school?’

Zhang Meng lifted a strip of cloth with his wooden axe and nodded, confirming it was made of modern fabric.

WOOF—

The Tiger Striped Dog’s bark came from another direction.

Chen Chong and the others scrambled over.

Behind a half-meter-wide fir tree lay a Fear Wolf nearly the height of a man.

A long gash marred its leg, with blood pulsing from the wound.

Unlike the Fear Wolf corpses they had seen before, this one... was still alive!

GRRR—

The Fear Wolf lay on the ground, growling and baring its teeth at them, its green eyes glowing with feral light.

Perhaps the presence of a wild beast stirred the hound’s natural instincts. The Tiger Striped Dog also bared its fangs, lowered its forelimbs, and assumed an attack stance.

It would charge forward and clamp down on the Fear Wolf’s neck without a moment’s hesitation at Chen Chong’s command.

"This is my first time seeing one of these wolves up close. Its front legs are so short, but its hind legs are ridiculously thick..."

Xu Jun said, sizing it up with curiosity. Wanting a better look, he took two tentative steps forward.

AWOOO!!!

Just then, the collapsed Fear Wolf sprang to its feet and lunged at him without warning.

The Tiger Striped Dog was the first to react, instantly darting forward and sinking its teeth into the back of the Fear Wolf’s neck.

The force of the charge knocked the Fear Wolf out of mid-air, sending it tumbling to one side. Wolf and dog rolled on the ground together.

The Tiger Striped Dog now showed the full combat prowess of a top-tier hound.

Once it latched onto its prey, it would never let go!

Its sharp fangs pierced through the hide as it thrashed its head back and forth, tearing viciously.

The Fear Wolf howled in pain. It wanted to fight back but couldn’t reach its attacker, so it could only roll and struggle on the ground, trying to get away.

SHLICK—

Wang Biao was the first to act, rushing forward and driving his spear home!

The sharp Refined Iron spearhead sank deep into the Fear Wolf’s chest.

Before it could even draw its last breath, Jia Wen leaped forward from the other side, raising his greatsword high above his head!

The greatsword glinted with a blinding, cold light under the sun.

THUD...

Blood flew, followed by a muffled thud.

The Fear Wolf’s snarling head was severed from its body before its jaws could even snap shut.

"Hmm. It cuts much cleaner now that it’s been sharpened."

Jia Wen flicked his greatsword, flinging the blood from its blade onto the ground.

"You okay?" Chen Chong walked over to Xu Jun and pulled him to his feet.

"Holy shit, Brother Chong, you have no idea how much that scared me! One second that wolf was down for the count, and the next it just shot up like a zombie. That’s not how normal creatures are supposed to move!"

Xu Jun was thoroughly spooked. If the Tiger Striped Dog hadn’t intervened in time, he would have been tackled.

He shuddered at the thought of the Fear Wolf’s finger-long fangs. Getting bitten by one of those... was an experience he’d rather not imagine.

"You can’t judge the special creatures of this world by normal standards. Its ability to spring up like that probably has something to do with those powerful hind legs."

"Just be more careful from now on. You have to be extremely cautious around any unfamiliar creature."

Chen Chong patted Xu Jun’s shoulder.

Fortunately, it was a close call with no real harm done. And while it had given him quite a scare, it was probably a good thing for Xu Jun.

It was the eighth day since they’d arrived in this world. Aside from that close call with the Blood-tooth Python, the group hadn’t faced much real danger, so Xu Jun’s mindset hadn’t fully hardened yet.

’Hopefully, this experience will help him shake off that jumpy, brash attitude of his and teach him to be more careful in the future...’

"Got it, Brother Chong." Xu Jun then looked at the Tiger Striped Dog standing guard by the dead Fear Wolf. "Hu Zi, I’d have been in real trouble if it weren’t for you. I don’t know how I can ever repay you for saving my life. From now on, I might as well just call you Brother Hu."

The Tiger Striped Dog tilted its head and glanced at Xu Jun, as if it didn’t understand what he was saying.

"If you really want to thank your ’Brother Hu,’ just feed him some extra meat when we get back," Chen Chong said teasingly as he walked toward the very dead Fear Wolf.

’I wonder... can we eat this thing?’

「Elsewhere.」

Zhang Meng and Huang Mao still hadn’t recovered from the shock. They had clearly been startled by the Fear Wolf’s sudden attack as well.

Just like Xu Jun, neither of them had expected the creature to suddenly shoot up from the ground and leap so high!

’If it had been one of us, we probably wouldn’t have been able to react in time...’

But that wasn’t what truly shocked Zhang Meng. It was the speed and decisiveness of Chen Chong and his team.

The entire kill took only a matter of seconds.

The Tiger Striped Dog was a full size smaller than the Fear Wolf, yet it bit down with such force that the wolf was rendered helpless.

The Fear Wolf may have been injured, but it wasn’t immobilized.

To be stopped mid-lunge and pinned to the ground like that... this hound was terrifyingly effective!

Then there were Wang Biao and Jia Wen, each more decisive and ruthless than the last.

He knew they were recruited characters, but their combat prowess was on another level...

Zhang Meng had also been watching Chen Chong closely.

He hadn’t had time to make a move, but that didn’t mean he hadn’t been ready.

’That dagger in his hand... he was probably about to throw it, wasn’t he?’

’This team... not counting Shen Xinrou on logistics, it’s just four people. Their combat strength could probably crush most clubs of twenty.’

’And even that, Zhang Meng felt, was probably an underestimation.’

’No wonder they have so few members yet never seem to lack resources. They’re the real deal.’

’It seems I’ve joined one hell of a team...’

AHHH!!!

A man’s bloodcurdling scream echoed from deeper in the woods.

Chen Chong, who had been inspecting the Fear Wolf’s corpse, shot to his feet and looked toward the source of the sound.

He only had to glance at the Tiger Striped Dog for it to understand. It immediately took off at a sprint.

"Follow it!"

Chen Chong broke into a run, and the others followed close behind with their weapons ready.

Soon, after passing through the dense woods, they saw more blood, though it was impossible to tell if it belonged to humans or Fear Wolves.

After running for several minutes, the dense surrounding bushes and trees began to thin out.

A small, three-to-four-meter-high hill appeared ahead, its exposed rocks covered in moss.

The group stopped in their tracks, taking in the scene before them...

Three Fear Wolf corpses lay scattered across the ground.

Some had been killed in a single blow, while others were still twitching on the verge of death.

Further in, six more Fear Wolves were walking upright, growling as they slowly closed in, as if cornering their prey.

At the base of the hill’s rocky face...

Seven or eight young men and women, armed with longswords and sabers, stood with their backs to the rock, huddled together in a defensive stance against the ever-present threat of the Fear Wolves.

Although their numbers were roughly even, these particular Fear Wolves were clearly unharmed. Snarling and baring their teeth, they looked exceptionally ferocious.

They were also a full size larger than the ones they’d found dead along the path.

In contrast, half of the surrounded humans had blood on them, all having suffered various lacerations.

Two of them were clutching bleeding arms, unable to even hold their weapons. They were clearly too severely injured to continue fighting.

The only ones who seemed to be in relatively good shape were a woman and two men at the front. The rest were all wounded to varying degrees.

They had managed to kill several Fear Wolves already, but judging by the current state of both sides, the humans’ odds were not looking good...

"Are those... people from the Swordsmanship Club?" Zhang Meng was the first to speak.

’How could it be them?’

Chen Chong and Xu Jun were also stunned. Since they lived on the same seventh floor of the faculty apartments, they naturally recognized the members of the Swordsmanship Club.

After all, they had run into them in the hallways a few times over the past several days.

The two groups hadn’t interacted much, but they always exchanged friendly nods when they passed each other, so their relationship was amicable enough.

They had met most of the club’s members, though they had never seen its rumored leader...

Until now.

At the very front of the group stood a young woman with her hair tied back. Her face was stained with blood, and she held a longsword defensively across her chest.

Even though it was the first time he’d seen her, Chen Chong recognized her instantly.

It was the leader of the Swordsmanship Club, Ning Yu—the one rumored to have been chased by talent scouts.

He had to admit, the rumors weren’t just smoke and mirrors.

Even with her face stained with blood and grime, her striking beauty couldn’t be hidden.

’Her looks, even without makeup, could put most online beauty influencers to shame...’

Just as Chen Chong’s group spotted them, the people from the Swordsmanship Club saw Chen Chong’s party as well.

A young man next to Ning Yu, who was holding a rapier, looked startled at first, then became visibly excited. "Ning Yu," he said, "those are the guys I told you about! The ones from our floor who are always carrying back game. I can’t believe we ran into them here."

"If they help us, we might actually be able to handle this pack of monster wolves!"

Ning Yu’s brow furrowed slightly as she looked toward them.

She saw the shield-bearing young man in the lead point forward. The burly man next to him, who had been holding a spear, immediately nocked an arrow to his bow.

His target: straight ahead!

Except...

’The direction he’s aiming... it doesn’t look like he can hit the wolves. It looks more like he’s aiming at... us?’
