Chapter 54 - 52: Stalking Pheasants, Man Is Like a Fish
Chen Chong picked up the Snake Scale from the ground and examined it closely in his hand.
The scale was huge, roughly the size of a normal person’s palm.
It was a deep, dark red, covered in a dense network of fine lines. It felt hard and slightly cool to the touch, exuding a faint chill in his hand.
Xu Jun came closer, watched for a long while, then said, "That Blood Python stank so bad when it passed by, so why doesn’t this Snake Scale have any smell?"
"If I’m not mistaken, the Blood Python’s smell is similar to a King Python’s. The stench comes from its well-developed anal glands, which is a defense mechanism some snakes have evolved. Normally, the scales themselves wouldn’t have a scent."
While explaining this to Xu Jun, doubts arose in Chen Chong’s mind.
’Does an Extraordinary Creature of the Blood-tooth Python’s level really need to evolve this kind of defense mechanism?’
’Animals often have protective coloration to help them avoid predators in the jungle.’
’The more vibrant an animal’s colors, the fewer natural enemies it has, placing it closer to the top of the food chain.’
’The Blood Python was clearly one such case.’
’Its whole body was a striking dark red, making it instantly noticeable in the jungle.’
’A creature like that no longer needs to rely on camouflage to hide from predators, because there’s almost nothing that can threaten it.’
’So why the intense stench?’
’Why is its defense so similar to a King Python’s?’
’Could it be that because it’s an Extraordinary Creature, the stench has some function I’m not aware of?’
"I never should have believed that theory those people at the school were peddling. ’Predict the Blood Python’s arrival by its stench,’ they said. By the time you actually smell it, that thing is already in your face."
Xu Jun’s muttering came from the side.
Chen Chong patted his shoulder. "You can’t really say that. There’s some truth to the theory. It’s just that the rain washed away the scent, so it didn’t travel as far. That’s also the very reason we managed to escape the python."
Snakes don’t rely on their eyes to hunt; they primarily use their sense of smell. They use their forked tongues to collect scent particles from the air, allowing them to pinpoint the source of their prey.
Although hiding in the water and the mud at the river bottom helped block our scent, if it hadn’t been raining, it’s hard to say whether we would have escaped.
"That’s true. Speaking of which, Brother Chong, your reaction was so fast. How did you even see the Blood Python? I didn’t notice a thing."
"I forgot to tell you. When I settled up two days ago, I got an Ability Card that lets me perceive danger ahead of time."
"Are you serious? That’s insane!"
Seeing the shocked and envious look in Xu Jun’s eyes, Chen Chong felt incredibly fortunate.
’Thank God I got this Ability Card. Otherwise, we really would’ve been done for this time.’
’I remember when I first got Beast Intuition, I thought the ability was pretty useless. Days went by and it never triggered once. At most, it just made me a little more sensitive to the slightest movements around me.’
’Now I see this ability is the quiet type—it doesn’t do anything until it does something incredible. It was a real lifesaver...’
Gazing at the deep furrow in the ground, Chen Chong and Xu Jun had looks of lingering fear on their faces.
Wherever the giant python had passed, rainwater had collected, forming a makeshift trench.
A behemoth like that was simply not something a normal person could fight...
"Alright, we can’t stay here any longer. What if that python doubles back? Let’s collect the fish and get out of here. We can sort them out when we get back."
Chen Chong casually stuffed the scale into his backpack, then pulled over the fish trap and began to untie the netting.
Xu Jun was even faster, quickly bringing over two fish containers to receive the catch.
They had gotten these two containers from the Fishing Club when trading fish and hadn’t had a chance to return them yet.
’But Chen Chong had no intention of returning them anyway. After all, they were quite useful for holding fish.’
’The Fishing Club had plenty of them. Worst case, he’d just cut them an extra half-pound of meat the next time he went to trade...’
SPLASH—
After putting stones and the foul-smelling guts they’d prepared back into the fish trap and lowering it into the water, Chen Chong and the other two picked up the fish containers, ready to leave.
The catch was undeniably huge, and carrying it was heavy work.
Chen Chong hadn’t sorted the catch from the trap; he just dumped it all into the fish containers.
Besides the live creatures like fish, shrimp, and crabs, there was just enough water to keep them from drying out.
Even so, the weight reached over a hundred pounds.
Luckily, the containers were large and sturdy enough; otherwise, they really wouldn’t have known how to carry such a large haul back.
Before leaving the desolate grasslands, Wang Biao specifically found new locations for the six traps before they finally left...
...
’700 meters to the east, a flock of pheasants will appear to forage by the river.’
’900 meters to the north, a Card is hidden.’
Chen Chong recalled the two pieces of C-Class intelligence in his mind.
’The easterly direction was by the school’s back gate, near the large river.’
’And the north was behind the gymnasium, an area I haven’t explored much.’
’The Desolate Grass River Stream was to the south, so the large river was clearly closer.’
Since it was currently noon, Chen Chong decided to head east first to see if they could run into the flock of pheasants.
The three of them walked through the jungle, carrying their backpacks and the fish containers.
It took them nearly two hours to circle around to their destination.
At some point, the heavy rain had also stopped...
This area was already near the large river, but it wasn’t the bank closest to the school’s back gate. Instead, it was an isolated spot on the other side, a place few people passed through.
"Sir, you said a flock of pheasants would show up here this afternoon?" Wang Biao asked, squatting beside a patch of grass.
Chen Chong nodded. "If nothing unexpected happens, yes. But I’m not sure exactly when they’ll appear."
"No problem. We’re tired from walking anyway, so it’s a good time to sit and rest. Here, Brother Chong."
Xu Jun plopped down on the ground, pulled a few bags of bread and some water bottles from his pack, and handed them to Chen Chong and Wang Biao.
The three of them sat there by the hidden patch of grass and began to eat their lunch.
Time ticked by. It was now afternoon, and the pheasants still hadn’t appeared.
Even so, neither Xu Jun nor Wang Biao doubted Chen Chong. After all, the previous incident with the Moose had already proven his reliability...
"Brother Chong, we’ve been out for so long. The fish in these containers won’t dry out and die, will they?" Xu Jun asked, looking at the two containers.
"They won’t. There isn’t much water in there, but it’s more than enough for these fish."
"What about suffocating or being crushed to death?"
"They might," Chen Chong nodded, then immediately changed his tone.
"But there won’t be a problem for a few hours. The Life Energy of fish is very strong, especially for small, miscellaneous fish like these. As long as you don’t injure them, they can survive for a day, or even a few days, with just a little water."
"Compared to the ways of dying you mentioned, I think it’s more likely we’d jolt them to death on our way here."
Xu Jun reached in and stirred the mass of fish.
The fish in the container were still full of Life Energy, squirming and thrashing about.
"You’re right, it’s no big deal. They’re way hardier than wild rabbits and stuff, huh."
Chen Chong nodded. "Fish are naturally resilient. The high mortality rate for domesticated ones is mostly due to environmental factors and water source issues during breeding."
"Take the Fishing Club’s fish, for example. They just don’t have a suitable breeding environment. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be in such a hurry to find a Fishpond Card."
"But a batch of these will definitely die after we get them back."
"They’ll either be injured in the trap and the containers, or they won’t adapt to the new environment. After the culling, the survivors will be able to fully adapt to the fishpond and thrive there."
As Chen Chong said this, he couldn’t help but feel a little emotional.
’These fish... they were just like people like him.’
’After the transmigration, those who couldn’t adapt would slowly be culled.’
’And those who did adapt could continue to live on tenaciously in this new land...’
...
