Chapter 118: Where is the Soul Ghost Body?
Jian Yu wouldn’t discuss the plot of the novel with anyone else.
But she did have a question she wanted to ask.
There were no pictures of the Soul Ghost Body on the forums, and the interstellar network only said that it specialized in Spiritual Attacks.
It liked to attack the Half-awakened and possess Awakeners. If the possession lasted long enough, it could even take complete control of a human body.
Jian Yu was a little curious.
"What does a Soul Ghost Body look like?"
Ling Yanzhi paused. "Normal people can only hear its voice; they can’t see its physical form."
He activated his Star Brain and lazily sketched a few strokes with his stylus.
"Like this."
A holographic screen appeared, displaying two simple drawings that floated and magnified before Jian Yu’s eyes.
Ling Yanzhi picked her up, testing her weight in his arms.
The corners of his lips curved upward. ’She seems a bit heavier.’
Recalling Pei Yin’s warning that carrying her too often could cause her calf muscles to atrophy, Ling Yanzhi put her down and held her hand instead.
He caught sight of Jian Yu’s dumbfounded expression out of the corner of his eye. She looked so dazed and cute it could soften anyone’s heart.
Ling Yanzhi chuckled.
"It does look a little comical. There’s nothing wrong with my drawing."
"Usually, only three types of people get targeted by it: those it covets, those it fears, and those with weak willpower and a relatively poor mental state."
"For example, the Soul Ghost Body we just caught was attached to your roommate. She’s currently undergoing spiritual Healing."
Jian Yu froze. "How could that be?"
She had guessed the female lead had mental issues, but she never would have connected her to a Soul Ghost Body.
’Weak willpower? But she’s the female lead!’
’The one with the strongest willpower of all!’
Ling Yanzhi glanced at Jian Yu. "Why not? Just because she’s an ordinary person?"
He paused briefly. "She’s been on medication for a long time. If Duan Fei hadn’t noticed her spiritual power fluctuating—suggesting a second awakening—she’d probably be processing her withdrawal from school by now."
Jian Yu was surprised. "Second awakening?"
’Doesn’t she awaken after drinking the medicine?’
’But the medicine hasn’t even been developed yet.’
’Did the plot change again?’
Ling Yanzhi nodded.
He grunted in affirmation and explained, "The probability of her awakening is very high, for reasons unknown. Pei Yin had just rushed over there when I got back."
The holographic screen retracted, the simple drawing of the Soul Ghost Body vanished, and the blue light on the Star Brain on Ling Yanzhi’s wrist extinguished.
Jian Yu snapped back to reality, at a complete loss for words regarding the so-called Soul Ghost Body.
The Soul Ghost Body had two forms.
It looked like the little ghost emoji you’d find in a chat app’s sticker pack in the real world.
A semi-transparent, round-headed figure with two black holes for eyes and a pointy, wiggling tail.
And another one, with one eye bigger than the other, sticking out a red tongue.
Yep, that’s what they looked like.
’It doesn’t seem so scary after all,’ Jian Yu thought.
She wouldn’t change her mind about that until after class the next day.
...
Neither Ling Yanzhi nor the others mentioned her soft imprisonment and attempted school transfer, and Jian Yu was too embarrassed to bring it up herself.
It was as if a new leaf had been turned. The night passed in harmony and peace.
She went back to attending her classes as usual.
The moment the bell rang to dismiss class, an overwhelming sleepiness washed over her.
Her consciousness suddenly grew hazy.
"Class was suspended for three days, and it was canceled once before, too. Our class year is truly cursed."
Shen Gu muttered a complaint during the break.
He turned and, seeing Jian Yu asleep, quickly shut his mouth.
Jian Yu could hear Shen Gu’s voice, but she had no way to respond.
A chill coiled around her wrists and ankles, while a cold object pressed faintly against her back.
A cold, sticky sensation snaked up the back of her neck and settled weightlessly on her shoulder.
A puff of breath sounded, and the putrid, suffocating stench of rotting flesh filled her nostrils.
Jian Yu’s brows furrowed tightly, the color instantly draining from her face.
The voice in her head was hoarse and seductive, each word dripping with incitement.
"*You have such a bright future, yet they want to cage you like a canary, to possess you, to chain you.*"
Jian Yu was speechless. ’Possess me?’
’Don’t spout nonsense. If I were stripped bare, Xi Yu would just say, "My darling, you’re so pale."’
The foul stench thickened as a long tongue slid across Jian Yu’s chin and the corner of her eye.
"*They don’t love you. They love the version of you they can control.*"
"*Only by making them all disappear can you truly escape and find real freedom.*"
"*Kill them! You need me. Let me help you.*"
’Kill them? I haven’t even had a taste of them yet.’ Jian Yu’s consciousness violently snapped back.
The chilling sensation on her back hadn’t vanished.
Her fingers twitched, and a wisp of smoke curled from their tips.
The smoke settled on her back, and a piercing shriek erupted, so loud it made everyone’s eardrums ache.
"*GIVE IT TO ME!!!*"
"*LET ME HELP YOU!!!!*"
Jian Yu’s scalp prickled, the hairs on her nape standing on end.
Her eyelids twitched, but she still couldn’t open them.
The vaporous threads spread out, wrapping around it layer by layer.
The bloodcurdling screams continued.
A trembling fear was all that remained in the air of the classroom.
Everyone clapped their hands over their ears, their faces deathly pale as they stared in the direction of the screams.
"The Chief! Where’s the Chief!?"
"Teacher Hu! Someone get Teacher Hu back here!"
Snapping out of it, everyone scrambled to get away.
The things in Shen Gu’s hands fell to the floor with a CLATTER.
He shook Jian Yu’s shoulder.
His eyes were wide with terror and confusion. "Wake up, Yu! I think the Soul Ghost Body is after me!!!"
Jian Yu: "..."
’It’s after me, you idiot!!!’
Jian Yu lifted her head, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at the black mist still lingering in the air.
She looked down. The black veins on her wrist throbbed faintly.
The classroom was silent.
Teacher Hu appeared in a flash. "Where is the Soul Ghost Body?"
