Chapter 379 - 378: The Promise of the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits
"Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits?"
"That is I."
"Is the Demonic Qi inside you completely purged?"
"Not yet, but it no longer affects me."
"Please wait a moment. We will open the array to let you out."
"My thanks for your trouble."
Gu Zhao shook the Three Pristine Ones Bell, and a surge of Taoist True Qi suppressed the Demonic Qi within the array.
The sixteen old Taoists formed a seal technique, opening a breach in the Nine Palace Eight Trigrams Array.
The next moment, the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits swam out through the opening in the seal.
First came the dragon’s head, then its body. A moment later, its claws emerged. It was dozens of meters wide—its body alone was like a small mountain.
Then, the Dragon King swam upward. The group watched from the side, but even after a while, they still couldn’t see its tail emerge.
Everyone was speechless.
Finally, a behemoth dozens of meters wide and over a thousand meters long appeared at the bottom of Mo Lake, coiling above the array.
Without using one’s Divine Sense, it was impossible to see the entire creature with the naked eye!
"It’s actually a white dragon..."
The group had their suspicions when the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits’ head first appeared, but seeing his full form still left them stunned.
Each of its scales was larger than a car, gleaming with a pure white luster. Its body, filled with power and elegant lines, exuded a graceful beauty.
The next moment, the white dragon turned and descended. A brilliant white light enveloped its body. By the time it landed beside the Eight Trigrams Array, the massive, mountain-like draconic form had vanished. In its place stood a middle-aged man in a white scholar’s robe, wearing a scholar’s headdress.
He had a slender, well-proportioned figure and a gentle, refined face, with three long strands of beard under his chin. One hand was held behind his back, the other in front. His demeanor was calm, and his deep-set eyes held a worldly weariness and tranquility rarely seen in mortals.
The Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits cupped his hands in a salute. "Many thanks to you Mages for your aid."
Gu Zhao and the old Taoists all rose to their feet, looking the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits up and down.
"You are too kind, Dragon King," Gu Zhao said, cupping his hands in return.
Bai Fei stepped forward and curtsied. "Greetings, Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits."
"Mountain Master Bai." The Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits nodded, his eyes flashing. "How is True Might Celestial Venerable?"
"After the battle thirty years ago, the Celestial Venerable returned to the Capital City and instructed the Xuanwei Divine Sect and the Spirit Court to withdraw completely from Wanling Jiangnan," Bai Fei said.
The Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits thought for a moment, then gave another faint nod. "He is decisive, I’ll give him that."
Bai Fei replied just as faintly, "But the people of Jiangnan were the ones who suffered."
A mocking smile touched the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits’ lips. "Do they care?"
Bai Fei lowered her gaze. "I care."
The Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits raised an eyebrow. He looked at Bai Fei, then at Gu Zhao and the other Taoists, a hint of surprise in his eyes that quickly turned to understanding.
"You all are not bad," the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits said with an appreciative nod.
Gu Zhao and the old Taoists understood what the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits meant, for they could sense the Evil Qi emanating from the old dragon. It wasn’t much, but it was definitely there.
No wonder he took the Ink Flood Dragon as his godson.
After that brief moment of appreciation, the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits turned back to Bai Fei and asked curiously, "You killed Mo Ao. How did you do it?"
A rare, playful smile appeared on Bai Fei’s face. She shook her head and said, "I couldn’t have killed Mo Ao."
The Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits’ eyes flashed, and a thoughtful look appeared as he gazed at Gu Zhao and the others.
"You are all Mages, and from the same sect. The cultivation technique you practice is quite marvelous."
"It can kill the Ink Flood Dragon, suppress Demonic Qi, and help me purify my Demonic Thoughts."
The more the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits looked, the more amazed he became. "I’ve only been trapped for a few decades. Has the world changed so much?"
A smile touched Bai Fei’s eyes. "The world hasn’t changed that much. What’s changed is Jiangzhou."
The Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits nodded thoughtfully.
"Mo Ao practiced a Demon Technique and ambushed me, trapping me at the bottom of Mo Lake. In another ten years, after three more ritual sacrifices, he would have been able to extract my Dragon Marrow and refine my Dragon Bones."
The Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits looked at Gu Zhao, his expression turning serious. "You killed Mo Ao and helped me purge the Demonic Qi. You have saved my life. You may ask for anything you wish."
Gu Zhao stood beside the array. The old Taoists had already reset the Eight Trigrams Array and, with a surge of True Qi, began to clear the remaining Demonic Qi from the ground.
"Since the Dragon King has made an offer, we won’t be polite." Gu Zhao met the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits’ scrutinizing gaze with a faint smile. "We ask that the Dragon King refrain from harming innocent mortals in the future."
The Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits was speechless.
After waiting a moment and seeing that Gu Zhao had nothing more to say, the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits finally raised an eyebrow and asked in astonishment, "That’s it? Just that?"
Gu Zhao nodded. "That’s it. Just that."
The look in the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits’ eyes finally changed.
A look of admiration appeared in Bai Fei’s eyes.
"Sect Leader Gu received his techniques from the Spirit Realm Upper Gods. He established himself in Changping Prefecture, founded the Daluo Palace, and has been widely accepting disciples to walk the path of heaven, help those in need, and vanquish demons and evil," Bai Fei explained in a gentle voice.
The Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits’ eyes narrowed. He asked for confirmation, "Techniques from the Upper Gods? The path of a Mage?"
Bai Fei nodded. "That is correct."
A sharp glint flashed in the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits’ eyes as if he had realized something. His gaze toward Gu Zhao and the others became much more solemn. "Fine. This King will not slaughter the innocent in the future. Even when I fight, I will stay far away from mortals."
"Thank you, Dragon King," Gu Zhao said, cupping his hands again.
"No, it is I who should thank you." The Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits inclined his head, then turned to Bai Fei. "I must return to the East Sea. Go and inform those old fools from the Xuanwei Divine Sect and the Spirit Court that the one from the calamity of the Celestial Demon’s descent years ago is not only alive but may be about to awaken."
He paused, his voice low. "Prepare to face the great calamity of the Celestial Demon once more."
"The Great Sun Profound Light Celestial Demon Ancestor?" Bai Fei’s eyes flashed. "Dragon King, did you see him?"
"I did not see him, but the Magic Mo Ao used to try and refine me was passed down by him," the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits said. "I saw a phantom of that Demon in the array."
"Understood!" Bai Fei immediately agreed.
Gu Zhao had previously said that the Ink Flood Dragon seemed to have summoned the Demon Ancestor. Now, with the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits’ confirmation, it was clear this was true. The Celestial Demon who descended all those years ago had not died and was now on the verge of reappearing.
This was big trouble!
The Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits looked at Gu Zhao and his followers. "Jiangzhou is this King’s territory. From now on, the Daluo Palace may proselytize freely in Jiangzhou. If anyone dares to cause trouble for the Daluo Palace, come find this King. My Dragon Palace is three hundred zhang beneath Lingshu Gorge in the Wanling River."
Gu Zhao raised his eyebrows and smiled. "In that case, I won’t be a stranger."
The Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits nodded, and with a flicker of his form, he vanished.
The scene fell quiet for a moment before Yunyang was the first to break the silence. "He’s clearly heavily injured, but his aura is so powerful..."
"Ten Thousand Years of Dao Practice is truly extraordinary."
"So this is what a True Dragon is like."
"Indeed, indeed. What an eye-opener."
"His Mental Realm is clear and he’s indifferent to life and death. His actions aren’t forced. His Dao Practice is profound. It was worth saving him."
"And now we have a backer."
"Hahaha!"
They weren’t children, after all. Though they had saved the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits, they never expected him to kowtow in gratitude and grant their every wish just because they’d saved his life.
Earning a favor was already a great outcome, not to mention he had also made a promise.
Having dealt with the Ink Flood Dragon and resolved the issue with the Dragon King of Ten Thousand Spirits in one go, their worries for the future were completely dispelled. Gu Zhao waved his hand grandly. "Return to the palace!"
