Chapter 1013 - 32: A Night of Trouble
The taste of roasted bear meat wasn’t particularly great; it could only be described as above average.
Because Adam didn’t add any seasoning.
This was also the result of everyone’s discussion. They planned to save the barbecue seasoning for use later in their survival.
After taking two big bites of bear meat, Chen Wen turned his attention to the mushroom fish soup.
Using the wooden spoon they had just made today, he scooped a spoonful of fish, added a few slices of mushroom, and finally filled it with fish soup.
As Chen Wen brought the enamel bowl to his face, a very peculiar aroma wafted out.
He sniffed it; there was a hint of fishy aroma, and of course, a faint fishy smell as well.
But what stood out more was the smell of the mushrooms.
It was a kind of earthy, woody fragrance, reminiscent of the forest and soil.
Not unpleasant, but not particularly fragrant for Chen Wen either.
Given that the soup had nothing added to it, Chen Wen didn’t care about the taste.
All he needed was to obtain the entry.
Holding the steaming soup, Chen Wen performed a common action among Hua Country people: tasted a sip of soup!
The hot fish soup entered his mouth, and a strong aroma, overwhelming to the point of discomfort, suddenly filled Chen Wen’s mouth.
What was this?
Umami?
Chen Wen couldn’t help but think as he swallowed the soup.
It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t particularly delicious either.
Chen Wen thought about it, then picked up a slice of mushroom with wooden chopsticks and put it in his mouth.
Soft, tender, chewy, slippery.
The texture was quite good!
Chen Wen’s eyes lit up, and around him, others couldn’t help but squint with pleasure.
Delicious!
The texture of the mushrooms was very good, and the taste was milder than the soup.
Simply put, it didn’t have much taste.
But there was a faint umami-sweet flavor.
Maybe it was because of the fish soup?
Chen Wen thought, but he didn’t think for long. He closed his eyes and looked at the entries.
The mushrooms provided Chen Wen with two good entries, and after careful consideration, he chose the entry that enhanced immunity.
[Immunity Boost (Blue): Enhances immunity, making it less likely to get sick]
It’s an entry that’s better than nothing.
Chen Wen thought.
However, from the beginning, he never placed too much importance on the mushroom entries; he found such fungal entries quite ordinary in his long survival journey.
Therefore, Chen Wen focused on the Anise Fish.
He picked up a piece of Anise Fish.
Chen Wen took a bite, and the Anise Fish meat was quite delicate, falling apart with a press of the tongue.
The taste was similar to the mushrooms, but sweeter.
There was a subtle sweetness, and it was very fresh.
Also, perhaps because it was called Anise Fish, Chen Wen tasted a hint of anise flavor, or star anise taste.
After swallowing the fish, Chen Wen closed his eyes again and looked at the entries.
The entry provided by the Anise Fish invigorated Chen Wen.
He chose the purple entry without hesitation.
[Cold Adaptation (Purple): Enhances your adaptation to low temperatures, with a secondary boost when surviving in water]
Although this entry wasn’t for cold-water fish, and its effects were somewhat different,
it met Chen Wen’s needs.
He needed such an entry to adapt to low water temperatures now.
However, the plan to hunt Baikal seals had to wait.
At least until the shelter was built.
Hunting seals now, even for Chen Wen, seemed a bit too adventurous.
It’s better to attempt it after gaining the entry.
After dinner, everyone was quite satisfied.
Then it was back to the routine of night watch.
Chen Wen reminded Roland and Fred, who were on the first watch, to be careful of wolverine attacks.
After all, they had obtained a large amount of food today, and in the forest, such food was like a Monster Gathering Device.
So, tonight’s night watch had to be conducted with extreme vigilance.
...
As Chen Wen and the others prepared for the night watch.
Not far from them.
A wolverine was quietly observing the situation from the bushes.
This wolverine was smaller than Chen Wen’s animal friend, King Kong, but it was far more fierce than King Kong!
In the faint moonlight, its eyes glowed with a wild, fierce light.
The wolverine gave a low growl, and soon, another wolverine that looked similar emerged beside it.
But this wolverine was slightly larger than the other, so let’s call it the big wolverine for now.
After coming out of the bushes, the big wolverine’s eyes were almost entirely filled with greed.
It could smell the thick scent of meat in the air!
Especially fragrant!
Also carrying a hint of non-meat fragrance, which made it crave, and that fragrance should be in its diet.
Wolverines are omnivores, which means they eat everything.
Whether it’s carrion, raw meat, berries, or plant roots, there is nothing they don’t eat.
The big wolverine let out a low growl, as if communicating with the smaller wolverine.
The small wolverine growled back softly.
They had encountered humans more than once, and at this distance, they subconsciously believed they wouldn’t be detected by humans far away.
But this time, there was a surprise.
The Snowy Owl, responsible for the night watch, silently flapped its wings and landed on a nearby spruce.
With a glance, its eyes quickly identified the two little thieves trying to steal food.
The Snowy Owl looked at the two wolverines disdainfully.
Steal food under my watch?
Dream on!
Try to make a move, and you’ll taste the consequences!
After confirming the positions of the two wolverines, the Snowy Owl quietly left.
It planned to find Roland and Fred, who were on night watch, and let them deal with the wolverines.
...
The night at Baikal Lake was far from peaceful.
At Chen Wen’s camp, the two wolverines were trying to do what they did best—steal food.
Meanwhile, the camp of the two hunters and young men who had arrived that afternoon was also visited by uninvited guests!
"There’s something wandering near our camp!"
The bald hunter was very alert.
He noticed something was off almost immediately.
As he spoke, he looked around the forest, his brow furrowed deeply.
The bearded hunter trusted his partner immensely.
He immediately pulled out a black shotgun, his finger already on the trigger.
As government-recognized legal hunters, they were allowed to carry shotguns.
"Don’t rush; we can only fire two shots in succession, and if we don’t hit the vital parts of that creature, it could counterattack us,"
the bald hunter said.
Beside them, the young man was already scared out of his wits.
He felt that the current atmosphere was very similar to when they were under attack!
"What is it? Is it your target?"
The young man asked boldly.
The bald hunter shook his head slightly: "I’m not sure. If it were that creature, it wouldn’t hesitate so much. With its domineering nature, it should charge straight in."
As the bald hunter spoke, suddenly, a very heavy breathing sound was heard nearby.
The creature lurking in the shadows seemed to have suddenly approached their camp.
Very close!
The bearded hunter, already on edge, couldn’t hold back. He aimed his shotgun at the source of the sound and fired!
