Chapter 383 - 309: Half a Year of Settling, the Expedition is at Hand
Everyone felt a gentle pull on their bodies, causing them to lean forward half an inch against their will.
The Purification Orbit scattered a silvery glow.
The moment the light touched their bodies, everyone in the hall felt a warm current surge into their limbs and bones.
Old, hidden injuries from years past, and even minute damage they hadn’t noticed, were being silently dissolved.
Everyone was inexplicably shocked, their eyes filled with excitement.
The most shocking was the Time Orbit.
It spun the slowest, so slow that the movement of every single point of light was clearly visible.
But the things it disturbed made everyone’s heart skip a beat.
The light of the candles split into countless afterimages near the Star Orbit.
A bird flying past the window froze in mid-air for an instant before continuing to flap its wings.
Even their own breathing seemed subtly displaced, as if coming from a great distance.
The entire hall fell silent.
Li Xing calmly withdrew his hand. The three rings of the Star Orbit dissipated, and everything returned to normal.
Li Xing looked at the young Guard Captain and sighed.
The Guard Captain’s heart trembled, and a look of dread appeared on his face.
’What could possibly make the mighty Exalted sigh?’
Li Xing’s gaze passed through the window, toward the churning gray clouds in the north.
"I hear... the world wailing!"
No one spoke again.
The young Guard Captain remained kneeling, his eyes suddenly turning red.
He was ashamed. An indescribable emotion clogged his throat, yet he couldn’t utter a single word.
"Be prepared," Li Xing said, turning to walk toward the door.
Behind him, the Thirteen Starlight Guard Captains rose in unison, striking their chests with their right fists in a perfectly synchronized movement.
The dull thud of the impacts echoed through the council hall.
「Late at night.」
Li Xing stood alone at the top of the Star Tower.
Gray moonlight shone in through the window, casting a long Shadow on the floor.
In the distance, the lights of the Holy City twinkled like an upside-down starry sky on the ground.
He held a sword in his hand—Li Yao’s personal sword.
The blade was Dark Silver, its edge radiating a biting chill. It was clearly the work of a master smith.
Li Xing held the sword in his left hand, pressing the index finger of his right hand against the center of the blade.
With a mere thought, the three rings of the Star Orbit began to spin slowly.
He split off a wisp of consciousness, reached into the core of the Purification Orbit, and gave a gentle tug.
A silver ray of light peeled away from the Star Orbit.
This was not ordinary Energy, but a sliver of a projection of his bloodline’s Rule.
The moment the light left his consciousness, Li Xing’s face paled slightly.
But he didn’t stop. He guided the silver light to flow down his arm, finally surging from his fingertip and into the sword’s blade.
The blade trembled violently, emitting a low hum.
The silver light traveled deep within the blade, finally coming to a stop near the hilt.
Then it slowly spread out, forming a silver spot the size of a fingernail before fading from sight.
Li Xing looked down at the blade. On the surface, there was nothing out of the ordinary.
But when he probed it with his Spiritual Power, he could clearly perceive the existence of the glowing spot.
He put down the sword and took out a Token.
The core Token of the Holy City’s great formation. It was palm-sized, made of Dark Gold Metal, and its surface was covered in complex Runes.
Normally, Li Xing kept it himself, as only he could unleash the great formation’s full power.
He held the Token, his eyes slightly closed.
A wisp of a Soul Mark peeled away from his Sea of Spirit and sank deep into the Token.
From now on, this Token would recognize two masters.
After doing all this, Li Xing put the Token away, picked up the sword, and walked to the window.
"Li Yao," he said softly, as if talking to himself.
"From now on, I’m entrusting the protection of Starlight City to you."
There was no reply, only the moonlight and the faint sound of a dog barking in the distance.
Li Xing raised his head and looked north. He could perceive a terrifying presence in the depths.
"We will meet soon. I hope you... don’t disappoint me."
「The next morning, in the central plaza of the Holy City.」
The sky had not yet fully brightened, but crowds had already begun to gather.
At first, they came in twos and threes, which then became a trickle.
Soon after, the streams of people from all directions merged into a black tide, surging toward the plaza.
The streets were packed, the rooftops were filled with people, and even the crenellations of the city walls had heads poking out from them.
No one organized it, no one sent out a notice; the news had spread through the Holy City like wildfire.
"The Exalted is going on a northern expedition."
By the time the sun rose, there were no less than a million people in the plaza, on the streets, and on the rooftops.
A black sea of heads stretched as far as the eye could see.
The elderly leaned on canes, young people held their children, and women huddled together, craning their necks on tiptoe to gaze in the same direction.
No one spoke. There was only the sound of suppressed breathing and the occasional cry of a baby.
In the center of the plaza, a high platform had been erected.
It was just a simple stone platform, three feet high, with no decorations.
When Li Xing ascended the platform, the million people fell silent as one.
This abrupt silence was extremely oppressive.
Even the babies’ cries ceased, as if their throats were being squeezed by something invisible.
Li Xing stood on the high platform. There was no Star Orbit behind him, no light surrounding his body.
He wore a plain, dark gray Long Robe, his hair tied back simply. He looked like an ordinary traveler.
But millions of people looked at him with nothing but reverence in their eyes.
Li Xing’s gaze swept across the crowd.
He saw an old man in the front row who was missing a leg, leaning on a crutch, his cloudy eyes brimming with tears.
On the old man’s chest hung a shining insignia—the mark of a commoner hero.
He saw a young woman in the middle of the crowd, holding a swaddled infant who was sleeping soundly.
Her husband must have been at the front lines, or perhaps he was already gone.
He saw a group of children on a rooftop. The oldest was no more than ten, and the youngest was being carried on their older brother’s back.
They were huddled together, their eyes wide with a mixture of excitement and nervousness.
