Wolf Princess Sold to the Dragon King

Chapter 237: Bachelor Pad Guy Is Her WHAT

Bitch. Witch. Liar. Con job. That was Guinevere’s highlight reel until a king called her mate. This man who had just put every wolf in the chamber on their knees.

She looked at him. Recognition punched her in the chest like a bucket of ice water. He was one of the men living in the goddamn brown room bachelor pad she’d woken up in. What the actual fuck was her life.

Nicholas Shadowfell met her eyes and held them with the kind of intensity that felt less like a look and more like an invisible hand pressing down on her.

Her wolf surged.

The rise was immediate, fierce, and completely irrational. It pushed against her ribs with an urgency that bordered on desperation.

She blinked it down.

It came back.

Her wolf didn’t say mate. It was confused and pulling towards something with the blind conviction of a compass needle that couldn’t find north but refused to stop spinning.

Fated matebonds didn’t always surface for women until their mid-twenties. She knew this. She’d read about it. Some women felt the pull immediately. Others went years before the recognition hit. There was a very real chance her wolf was reacting to something it couldn’t identify yet, a signal too early to decode, a frequency her body was receiving but her mind couldn’t translate.

Or Nicholas Shadowfell was confused.

That was equally possible. No, she had never heard of a wolf misidentifying his mate, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t possible. Especially under stress. Right?

Sure, Guinevere.

She had technically already slept near, woken up next to, and run from this man. If this was a fated matebond, the universe had a sick fucking sense of humor and owed them both a formal goddamn apology.

His face was doing something complicated she couldn’t read. The muscles around his eyes were tight but his mouth was neutral and his jaw was locked in a position that could have been anger or restraint or something else entirely that she didn’t have a dictionary for. Every micro-expression contradicted the last one, and the result was a face at war with itself in a language she didn’t speak.

She thought about Kael.

The sparks. The gold. The matebond mark on her neck. The way his touch lit her skin like a circuit completing. Everything between them pointed in one direction and that direction was clear.

Maybe Kael was her chosen mate. The one her father had arranged. The man she’d been sold to, marked by, and mated with on a bed full of pillows she’d mocked. Maybe the matebond with Kael was real and Nicholas’s wolf was reacting to something else. Proximity. Stress. A misfire.

She looked away first.

Deliberate. Controlled. Eyes moving to the table, then to her chair, then to anywhere that wasn’t the man standing six feet away staring at her like she was the answer to a question he’d been asking for years.

Her hand drifted to her throat without thinking. Fingertips found the cut. Wet. She pulled her hand back and looked at the blood on her fingers with the detached calm of a woman who had run out of adrenaline three crises ago.

Nicholas hadn’t moved, his eyes still on her. She could feel his gaze the way you feel a sunburn forming, slow and warm and impossible to fucking ignore.

She was bleeding from her throat, exhausted beyond reason, and blushing like a goddamn schoolgirl because a man she’d never spoken to was looking at her from across a table. Her body was a traitor and her wolf was its accomplice.

Tharos Stonehowl sheathed his ruined blade with a sound like a man slamming a door he couldn’t lock. His jaw was grinding loud enough to hear from three rows up.

"This isn’t over, Shadowfell."

He turned and stormed towards the doors like a man exiting his own roast. His wolves fell in behind him, tight formation, heads down, the body language of men who knew their Alpha had just been publicly gutted and were choosing to process that on the march.

A slow clap started from the back of the chamber.

One man. Steady rhythm. The acoustics carried it across the stone like a heartbeat.

Then a second pair of hands joined. Then a third.

Duskwin clapped with the enthusiasm of someone who’d just seen a God do a backflip and was determined to rate it from his seat. Ashfang grinned and joined in.

The applause spread through the chamber in a wave that shouldn’t have been possible. Alphas who had drawn blades on her were clapping including both the Blackmoor twins. Darwin Blackmoor looked at his hands like they’d betrayed him but didn’t stop. Benjamin looked at his brother like hell was freezing over and he was now considering flipping sides.

Even the three emotional support packs that had backed Stonehowl were clapping, which was the most spectacular act of political cowardice she had ever witnessed and she respected the absolute hell out of it.

It was bizarre. The entire thing was bizarre. Wolf politics made zero goddamn sense.

A third of this room had blades drawn a few minutes ago. The emotional whiplash in this chamber could give a man a concussion and she was the one with the neck wound.

Karma was a beautiful thing when it finally showed the fuck up. The applause died naturally. The chamber exhaled. Bodies shifted. Conversations resumed at a low hum as hundreds of men processed what they’d just witnessed.

Guinevere moved towards her chair. Her six wolves fell in behind her, formation tight, boots in sync.

When she reached the Lunaris seat, one of her men pressed a cloth into her hand without a word.

"Thank you," she said softly.

She sat, pressed the cloth against her throat, and held it there with the steady hand of a woman who was bleeding, outnumbered, exhausted, and absolutely refusing to look like any of those things.

Her six men nodded in unison, then peeled off towards the stands, taking positions with clean efficiency.

Even with this summit being in a ditch on fire because it had gone so far off the rails, every one of them had just executed a flawless formation peel-off.

Best fucking flock here. She stood by it.
