Chapter 239: Firstborn Heir With An Alpha Wolf
Firstborn. Heir. Alpha wolf. Alpha abilities. Chosen by the Alpha.
Guinevere checked exactly zero of those boxes. Not even a partial. She was batting a perfect fucking zero on every requirement.
She was second born. Her wolf was not an Alpha wolf. She was a princess who had stolen a token from her brother’s chambers, borrowed his cape, and run eight hundred miles on the assumption that showing up was the hard part.
She was wrong. Her chest tightened.
"The rite predates every Alpha and pack in this room," Nicholas continued. "If the blood is deemed unworthy or is false, the territory will not answer. The one who offered it will forfeit their seat and the right to remain in this chamber."
He stole a glance at her for the first time since he began speaking.
It lasted less than a second. A flicker of something moved behind his eyes that looked uncomfortably close to pain. The kind of expression a man makes when he already knows the outcome and doesn’t want to watch it happen.
She understood.
He already knew this wouldn’t work for her. He knew it before he said the words. And he hadn’t challenged her seat or warned her because he didn’t have the heart to kick her out of a chamber himself.
It sat heavy in her chest.
But if he was hoping she would leave on her own, he was feeling sorry for the wrong woman. This woman was stubborn. She was already in the damn room and she was staying.
It was what it was.
If the Gods wanted to reject her, they could do it to her face.
She didn’t need anyone feeling sorry for her. Period.
She’d been whipped, frozen, ridden demons, glowed, and called a con job. A dark map wasn’t going to be the thing that broke her. Fuck that.
DOMINO 47: THE FINAL HORSE ROUNDS THE BEND
GREYHALL CROSSING - COUNCIL CHAMBER - 8:35 PM
Daggers appeared across the table. Short ceremonial blades pulled from belts and sheaths, each one different, each one old. Steel and bone and leather handles worn smooth by generations of the same ritual.
Gavyn stood from the gallery and crossed to her chair. He placed a dagger on the table in front of her, handle facing her, with the quiet efficiency of a man who had anticipated this exact problem.
"Thank you," she said.
Yes, she didn’t have a blade. Yes, she was absolutely regretting leaving Cassian’s sword in his chambers. Yes, this was embarrassing. A borrowed dagger from her borrowed Beta at a summit she’d borrowed her way into.
But she had bigger problems than a damn blade.
Stolen token. Borrowed cape. Borrowed Beta. Borrowed dagger. If there was an award for "most fraudulent delegate at a continental summit," she was winning it by a goddamn landslide and the competition wasn’t close.
Nicholas Shadowfell went first.
He drew the ceremonial dagger across his palm without ceremony, pressed his bloodied hand to the Shadowfell token, and placed it into the carved slot on the table.
The map responded instantly.
A massive stretch of Nyros blazed to life. Nicholas’s territory was the largest and it was bright enough that the light was showing off.
"Fucking Shadowfell," someone muttered from the crowd.
Even his blood was competitive. Noted. She stole a glance at his twelve men. Twelve out of twelve were looking at Nicholas like he’d just scored the winning goal.
One by one, the Alphas followed.
Ashfang bled on the token. His land lit up, solid but clearly second-tier compared to Shadowfell’s.
It only took a few more Alphas for Guinevere to understand that brighter meant better. It was a live ranking of who had the biggest dick in the room. Shadowfell’s was brightest by a long shot, which is exactly why his men had their chests puffed out entirely too goddamn pleased with themselves.
Alphas kept shooting each other knowing looks every time certain ones finished. It was petty as fuck. It was also entertaining as hell.
There were cliques in this room and they were keeping a live scoreboard.
Darwin’s territory flared and the room immediately treated it like a twin competition. Benjamin rolled his eyes so hard it was almost audible, cut his palm, and activated his own. Identical brightness. Darwin looked genuinely offended.
More Alphas. More blood. More light. The map filled piece by piece like a puzzle assembling itself. Some territories burned bright. Others glowed modest and quiet. Shadowfell remained king of the brightness hill by a large margin.
Stonehowl’s slot sat empty. The territory stayed dark, a black hole in the map.
Guinevere’s turn finally came about halfway through the rotation.
She unsheathed Gavyn’s dagger. The handle was too large and clunky. She adjusted, fumbled it visibly, and of course every Alpha present noticed. Half the table was smirking with pure anticipatory glee, waiting for the failure they’d already decided was coming so they could nod and feel validated.
A solid fourth of the table was leaned back, arms crossed, watching her with genuine scientific interest. The same energy a man has when he flips a coin and genuinely doesn’t give a shit which side comes up, as long as he gets to see it.
A handful were practically hovering, full I-put-money-on-this intensity, staring like she was the final horse coming around the bend.
Darwin Blackmoor, the twin who had backed Tharos Stonehowl, caught Benjamin’s eye. Benjamin winked.
She drew the blade across her palm. The cut was clean. Blood pooled fast and warm.
She pressed her hand to the Lunaris token. Felt the cold metal drink the heat from her skin.
She placed it in the slot.
Nothing happened.
Token in the slot. Map still black over Lunaris. The silence that followed was the specific, satisfied quiet of people who’d already written the ending and were politely waiting for the universe to catch up and roll the credits.
Darwin Blackmoor let out a loud, echoing snigger that traveled across the chamber and landed on her like a brick to the face.
She didn’t react because reacting to a man laughing at her failure while her blood sat on a dead table would have been the emotional equivalent of shitting herself in public and she had standards, goddamn it.
Nicholas’s face tightened. The pain behind his eyes from earlier was back, sharper now, the expression of a man watching something he couldn’t stop and didn’t want to see.
Guinevere’s insides were twisting in the slow, sick freefall of someone who’d gone all-in blind and just found out they were catastrophically wrong.
