Chapter 111 — The Road That Returned the Boots

Sponsored

D47 swallowed a worker from the ankles down. The man had crossed the loading yard carrying an empty lunch tin when the paving opened beneath his boots. He dropped to both knees and yanked upward hard enough to leave the leather behind, while the lane closed around the boots without touching his legs.

He crawled onto the nearest crate in his socks. "Those were new."

By the time Ilan entered through the northern gate, the worker had refused three offers of spare footwear because he wanted the pair still standing upright in the paving. Eleven came beside Ilan, while Amadi Ro followed with the D47 file beneath one arm.

The blank sign at the yard entrance had moved again and now stood near the southern waste gap, facing inward. It looked less like a warning to people than a warning to whatever cargo entered from route storage.

ASK BEFORE USING THIS ROAD

The trapped worker pointed at his boots. "Get them out."

Amadi checked his current name plate.

JOREN PELL.

The file showed no documented relation to Ivo Pell. Amadi looked back at him. "Where did you buy them?"

"Laundry resale."

"Previous owner?"

"No idea."

Ilan crouched at the edge of D47's active paving. The nearest stones shifted an inch away from their fingers before they could touch the leather, and beneath one heel a purchaser seal showed through, almost scraped away.

The boots had belonged to someone linked to the old account. D47 had not swallowed Joren because Joren served the purchaser; it had taken an object carrying inherited history.

Eleven looked at Joren's socks. "Did the road hurt you?"

"No."

"Did it ask before taking the boots?"

"No."

The paving clicked, and a narrow route opened between the trapped leather and the western waste gate. D47 intended to move them.

Amadi remained on the ordinary border stone. "Do not move the boots."

The path widened anyway. No response indicated the lane understood her command, no panel had granted Amadi authority over the road itself, and D47 had already shown that institutional orders could become part of the problem.

Ilan opened the file. Two entries controlled the current review.

Historical instruction:

PURCHASER CARGO DENIED REVIEW.

Current limit:

NO PURCHASER-MARKED CARGO WITHOUT MANUAL UNLOADING.

Ilan looked at the boots. "They are not cargo."

The stones clicked beneath the leather. Apparently D47 disagreed.

Joren leaned over the crate. "They are mine." The paving stopped for one second, then resumed.

Amadi looked at him. "Again."

"They are mine."

One boot sank another half inch. Eleven watched it disappear farther into the paving before asking Joren, "Do you want them?"

He looked at the cracked sole. "Yes."

"Why?"

"They fit."

No ownership law depended on that answer. It described a current relationship the road had ignored, and the paving slowed.

Ilan placed a blank physical strip beside the nearest boot. It carried both claims.

CURRENT OWNER: JOREN PELL.

HISTORICAL MARK: PURCHASER.

D47 split the strip down the middle. One half slid toward Joren and the other travelled west.

Ilan watched both pieces stop. "Both histories."

Amadi folded her arms. "Then which controls?"

The lane opened a third route.

North.

Medical.

A bandage cart entered through the gate. D47 ignored the unmarked medicine and dragged the boots underneath the paving instead.

Joren swore. Eleven climbed onto a stack of crates to keep off the active stones.

"Where is it taking them?"

Ilan watched the route. "Returning them."

"To whom?"

"I don't know."

Joren shook his head. "Laundry sold them."

"Before Laundry?"

"No idea."

The boots travelled six feet beneath the paving without moving Joren. They emerged beside an old supply hatch set into the Medical wall.

Facilities opened it. Inside stood shelves of abandoned uniforms, damaged equipment, and footwear recovered after the Strip Floor fight. Most had been cleared years ago, but one empty slot matched the boots.

A physical tag remained hanging from the shelf beside the empty slot.

OPERATOR ORIS.

Eleven looked toward Ilan. "Len Oris?"

The old route records had recovered that name after the Quill credential terminated. No current identity had been confirmed. No one knew whether Len Oris had been the masked purchaser, worked for them, borrowed the equipment, or existed now in any form.

Nobody declared the boots theirs. Joren climbed down from the crate and kept looking at the pair on the shelf.

"I still want them."

Amadi opened the old inventory sheet. "Evidence status was released eighteen months ago."

The loading-yard supervisor checked the disposal record. Screening had failed to detect the worn purchaser mark, and Laundry had lawfully resold the boots afterward.

Under current property rules, Joren owned them. D47 had returned them to a historical location anyway, valuing origin over present ownership.

Eleven touched their current name plate. "Same mistake."

Assigned first.

Chosen later.

System keeps the first because the first makes the record easier.

Ilan stayed outside the central paving. "D47." The road shifted.

"The boots belonged to Operator Oris."

One click.

"They belong to Joren now."

Two clicks.

Nobody had established a language for D47's clicks, so Ilan did not write yes or no beside them.

"Do you refuse the boots because of the purchaser mark?" The waste path opened.

"Do you want them returned to the old shelf?" The northern path widened.

Two preferred outcomes had appeared, and neither belonged to Joren.

Amadi looked at the paving. "Ask whether it can refuse use without taking his property."

Ilan turned to Joren first. "Are you willing to walk around the active lane if the boots are returned?"

"How far?"

"Unknown."

Joren glared at the road. "Ask it."

Ilan faced the paving. "Can Joren carry the boots around you?"

The ASK BEFORE USING THIS ROAD sign moved toward the western wall and stopped beside a thin strip of ordinary flooring that curved around the loading yard's perimeter. The route was longer and uneven, but it stayed outside D47's active stones.

Joren stared at it. "You want me to walk around?" Nothing moved.

Eleven looked at him. "You can leave the boots."

"They are mine."

"Then walk around."

Joren picked them up. D47 did not pull.

He put one boot on while standing on the border. The active paving rose beneath the toe as soon as the leather crossed over, and Joren stepped back before the stone settled again.

The accommodation became visible. D47 would not carry the marked boots, but it could refrain from seizing them if Joren did not force contact.

Amadi wrote the accommodation into the current record.

CURRENT OWNER RETAINS OBJECT.

ACTIVE LOCATION REFUSES CONTACT.

ALTERNATE PHYSICAL ROUTE REQUIRED.

No judgment that D47's refusal was morally correct. No declaration that refusal proved personhood.

Facilities extended the perimeter path with plain boards. Eleven crossed first without the boots, and D47 remained still.

Joren followed wearing them. The paving stayed flat.

The new route added seven minutes between Laundry and Medical. Joren reached the opposite side, looked back at the road, then at the old supply hatch.

"Who is Oris?"

"No confirmed answer," Ilan said.

"Criminal?"

"Unknown."

"Purchaser?"

"Unknown."

"Then why does the road hate the mark?"

Ilan shook their head. "Unknown."

Joren stared at them. "Useful people." He walked away in his boots.

The loading-yard supervisor asked Amadi to remove the Operator Oris tag now that current ownership had been resolved. Amadi refused.

Joren's property was settled. The historical evidence was not.

The lane moved the blank sign again. This time it faced the old shelf.

ASK BEFORE USING THIS ROAD.

Ilan read it. "Is that directed at us?"

Eleven stepped onto the border stone. "Possibly."

Ilan disliked the word. They left it in the report.
