Chapter 113 — The Brace That Said Mother

Sponsored

The second Kestrel relief lasted five seconds. The plan had allowed eight, and nobody attempted longer.

The external counterbrace surrounded the fifteenth step exactly as before: four active supports, one reserve, no handle, no names, and no promise language. The ring sat against the physical stone waiting to catch outward pressure without reaching inside.

Mira did not attend. Medical kept her in Logistics Annex, and she would receive strain readings after the session instead of sitting beside the dial until pain forced someone else to remove her.

Amadi Ro held stop authority. Senka knelt beside the knock plate, Priya remained beyond the attention boundary with Lio Fen, Achebe watched from behind the investigation barrier, and Facilities installed a fresh mechanical strain dial.

The occupants had agreed to the same signals before the previous test. The current session kept those meanings unchanged.

One knock for yes.

Two for no.

Two rapid knocks for pain during the active transfer.

Senka struck the fifteenth step once. "Do you understand the outside support is in place?" One knock answered.

"Do you agree that a different person may release this time?"

Silence held. Amadi waited without adding urgency or reminding them about the previous success. Twelve seconds passed before one knock answered.

Senka continued. "Do you want the same eight-second limit?" Two knocks answered no.

"Shorter?" One knock answered.

"Five seconds?" One knock answered again.

The limit came from inside. Facilities tightened the four active braces until they reached baseline contact, and the strain dial settled at three units.

Amadi repeated the test boundary. "One person releases. Everyone else maintains current pressure. We stop at five seconds or immediately on pain." One knock accepted the boundary.

Release.

The fifteenth step shifted outward. The ring accepted the force, and the dial rose to ten.

One second.

A low groan came from inside, but no pain signal followed.

Two.

The reserve brace stayed inactive as the count continued.

Three.

The left support warmed, and the nearest Facilities worker lifted both hands away.

"I'm not touching it."

Black letters appeared beneath the steel clamp.

ADISA KO.

Priya's pale wrist ring burned. Lio spoke immediately.

"Priya Odhiambo."

His slate remained stable, with her full name still present. The name on the brace did not alter her current record.

Amadi raised one hand without closing it. "Current pressure?"

"Eleven."

Four seconds.

The name on the support crossed itself out before another word appeared.

MOTHER.

The steel ring tightened around the step without anyone turning a screw. A voice shouted from inside.

"Don't let it take the turn!"

Amadi closed her fist. "Stop."

Facilities increased external support gradually. The internal person who had released did not resume pressure, and the dial stayed at eleven.

Five seconds ended. The outside brace continued holding.

Senka struck the pain question. Two rapid knocks answered: pain.

"Where?" she asked.

They had agreed on no location code. The left support bent toward the nearest human hand.

Amadi stood closest. A narrow band extended from the ring, slowly and mechanically, toward the position where a palm might rest. When Amadi stepped backward, the band turned toward Senka.

Priya moved before thinking. One boot reached the attention line, and she stopped there. The metal band turned toward her as MOTHER darkened across the support.

"Everyone away from the ring," Amadi said.

Facilities retreated to the outer marks. Senka moved back with the knock plate, while Priya stayed behind the boundary.

The steel reached into empty air. No hand accepted it.

The strain climbed to thirteen. The reserve engaged.

The younger voice shouted from inside. "She can't take it back!"

Senka kept her question narrow. "Who?"

"The one who let go."

"Can they resume holding?" Two knocks answered no.

"Are they injured?" One knock answered yes.

The outside brace had carried more than force. It had interrupted the internal turn, and whoever released could no longer reclaim it while the steel held the Mother relation.

Amadi stared at the left support. "Can another person inside take the turn?"

Silence held until one knock answered.

"Do they consent?"

Nothing answered. The ring creaked, and Amadi repeated the exact question.

One knock answered the second request. A second internal holder accepted.

The letters changed. MOTHER moved from the left support to the upper brace, and the dial fell to nine.

A woman gasped inside the sealed stair. The metal band seeking an external hand retracted.

For one second, the system stabilized. Then the left support printed:

ADISA.

The upper brace still carried:

MOTHER.

Two related identities now existed on separate pieces of steel. Priya's wrist ring turned cold, and Lio repeated her name. His slate lost the surname for half a breath, then returned it.

Senka looked at Amadi. "End contact."

"Agreed."

Facilities tried loosening the left support. Two rapid knocks answered immediately with pain, so they stopped. The workers tried the upper brace instead, and the strain jumped to fourteen.

The reserve groaned. MOTHER moved onto it.

Three parts of the ring now carried pieces of the relation. No safe release order remained.

Mira's design had distributed physical load. Kestrel had begun distributing identity through the same structure.

Amadi addressed the occupants. "We will not move another brace until you tell us what order reduces harm."

The younger voice answered. "Take Adisa off first."

"Which support?"

"Left."

Facilities prepared to move the named support. Senka stopped them with another question.

"What happens to the person connected to that name?"

The older voice answered this time. "She remembers being one."

No one interpreted the sentence further. Amadi authorized one-quarter turn.

The left support loosened. ADISA faded, and a woman inside screamed.

The pain signal came so quickly that the knocks blurred into a rattle.

"Stop."

Facilities froze. The letters returned faintly.

Not fully attached.

Not fully removed.

Priya felt her attention press against its limits. Somewhere within the possible outcomes existed a version that hurt less, but she did not open herself to it.

"Ask them."

Senka did. "Do you want the left support tightened again?"

One knock.

Facilities returned it to the prior position. The pain signal ended, and ADISA remained on the brace.

The session could not reset. After several minutes, they found a temporary balance.

All four active supports carried equal physical pressure, while the reserve loosened by less than one turn. The dial settled at eight.

Inside, two holders resumed part of the load, and the external ring carried the rest.

MOTHER remained faint across the upper brace, while ADISA remained on the left. No person outside accepted either relation.

The young voice spoke again. "That one is holding her place."

Senka asked, "The brace?" One knock answered.

"Is Adisa present inside?" Two knocks answered no.

"Is the name part of what someone carries?" One knock answered.

"Can we remove the brace today?" Two knocks answered no.

The counterbrace had created a new limitation. It could provide relief, but it could also absorb identity structure from the turn it carried. Physical support stopped being neutral when it held the burden long enough.

Amadi ended all further testing. There would be no attempt tomorrow, no longer duration, and no second transfer until they understood the contaminated supports, the internal holder stabilized, relational residue could be discharged without assigning it to a person, and the ring could be removed without violently returning pressure.

Facilities constructed a physical barrier around the counterbrace. The supports had to remain installed, the reserve was no longer fully available, and Kestrel's safety margin had decreased.

Priya stayed beyond the line while the ring at her wrist alternated warm and cold with the names on the steel. She did not move closer.

Achebe spoke from behind the investigation barrier. "The outside system is becoming part of the pocket."

Amadi looked at the ring. "Yes."

"Can it spread through Facilities?"

"Unknown."

"Do we evacuate?"

"Medical and Facilities decide."

Achebe accepted the answer. No command returned to her through fear.

The continuity specialist tested the surrounding stone. No spread showed beyond the ring for now.

Senka placed the knock plate against the floor. "We are leaving the supports exactly where they are." One knock answered.

"We will not test again until we understand the names." One knock answered again.

"Do you need a current contact before we stop?"

Silence held until the woman spoke.

"Tell Adisa she can rest."

Amadi's expression changed before she could prevent it. "Can she hear us?" Two knocks answered no.

"Is she alive?"

No yes came. No no came. The steel answered instead, and ADISA brightened.

It was a stored relation reacting to the name, not a voice and not proof of life.

Senka covered the letters with plain cloth. They remained visible through it.

The occupants had received eight seconds of relief once and five seconds the second time. The shorter attempt had caused more harm.

When the panel left, the ring remained around the sealed stair. One brace carried MOTHER, one carried ADISA, and the others held pressure.

Nobody knew whether the steel was helping the people inside or becoming another thing they would someday need to rescue.
