Chapter 118 — The Name That Expired on Time

Harun spilled soup onto his left sleeve because the spoon was designed for his right hand. He looked at the stain, then at Dorian across the treatment-room table.

"Still moves soup."

Dorian glanced at the splints around Harun’s three injured fingers. "Poorly."

The joke worked better the second time because nobody had nearly lost a hand in the previous five minutes. Bell had cleared Harun for seated Facilities review but not tool use.

Three fingers remained swollen beneath the splints, sensation in the middle finger came and went, and gripping with the injured hand was prohibited until the next nerve check. Harun had already tried to argue that carrying paper was not gripping.

Bell had asked whether paper required fingers. The argument ended there.

Sefa brought the revised action-record forms to the treatment room because Harun had asked to see what replaced the protocol that failed him. Bellan came too, though he stood near the door until Harun pointed at the empty chair.

"Sit or leave."

Bellan sat. The new form required a current name, exact action, visible completion state, handoff if unfinished, and expiration point.

Facilities had used it for one shift without a recorded incident, which proved very little and still mattered.

Sefa placed three completed examples on the table. The first began with her own current action.

SEFA IS CHECKING NORTH HINGES ONE THROUGH SIX UNTIL EACH IS CHALKED.

COMPLETED: 10:12.

RECORD CLOSED.

TOMA IS MOVING MEDICAL CRATES FROM EAST RACK TO CART THREE UNTIL RACK IS EMPTY.

COMPLETED: 11:04.

RECORD CLOSED.

BELLAN IS REVIEWING WESTERN REPAIR ASSIGNMENTS UNTIL SECOND BELL.

HANDED OFF TO: NERA VOSS AT FIRST BELL.

RECORD CLOSED FOR BELLAN.

Harun read the last one twice. "You wrote your own name."

Bellan nodded.

"Did you die?"

"No."

"Become supervisor forever?"

Bellan did not answer the joke. "No." Dorian’s gold scar warmed faintly at supervisor, and he shifted the grey hand farther from the table until the warmth faded.

Sefa noticed. "That word still does it."

"Sometimes."

"The form uses names."

"Names are not the same thing as roles."

"You said names can become roles."

"They can."

Harun looked between them. "Useful system."

Dorian gave him a flat look. Marek had apparently infected the building with that answer.

Sefa had brought one unresolved question. Facilities wanted to know whether an action record could remain visible for accountability after the action expired without becoming a permanent role relation.

Dorian refused to answer from his own body. "Do not test that on me."

Bellan frowned. "I was asking about the forms."

"You were looking at my hand."

Bell answered from beside Harun’s cot. "No deliberate exposure. That restriction has not changed."

Sefa turned the top page around. "Then we use ordinary records."

The Records Annex had already archived Bellan’s closed review entry and Sefa’s completed hinge check during the previous shift. Neither record had reassigned current work, generated a title, or caused the system to keep either person on the task after the written expiration. That evidence came from the forms doing normal work, not from putting Dorian beside them to see whether his arm reacted.

They moved the discussion to the neutral annex because the live board was there. Dorian joined only after Sefa covered every old role-bearing sheet and left the current action records visible; Bell kept the door open and his self-release route unobstructed.

Harun came as an observer with the injured hand supported against his chest. Sefa carried the forms, and Bellan took responsibility for reading only the wording currently used by Facilities.

The first archived entry stated that Sefa had checked north hinges one through six and completed the action at 10:12. The live board contained no current assignment for her, while the archive still preserved who had done the work.

A Facilities worker entered midway through the review and glanced at the old sheet. "Sefa is the north hinge checker, right?"

Dorian’s gold scar lit.

Sefa swore. "No."

The worker froze. Dorian stepped toward the open exit instead of remaining for another sentence.

"Do not repeat it," he said. "Past action."

The worker corrected herself once. "Sefa completed the north hinge check at ten twelve."

The light began fading as Dorian crossed into the corridor. Bell followed him immediately and ended his participation in the annex review.

No one asked for a second comparison. No one repeated the title to make the result cleaner.

Sefa wrote down what had actually happened: a permanent-sounding present title had been spoken accidentally during ordinary review, Dorian reacted, the wording was corrected once, and Medical removed him from the room. The incident did not become a planned language test.

Bellan looked toward the corridor. "The distinction is still obvious."

Harun read the archive line. "Past action stays. Present job ends."

"Yes," Sefa said.

"What about unfinished work?"

They answered that through the procedure rather than Dorian’s arm. Sefa placed the existing handoff example on the board.

SEFA IS CHECKING BOLTS ONE THROUGH FOUR UNTIL EACH IS MARKED.

Below it:

SEFA STOPPED AFTER BOLT THREE.

BOLT FOUR UNCHECKED.

BELLAN ACCEPTED HANDOFF.

SEFA’S CHECKING ACTION ENDED AT 14:03.

The current work moved to Bellan at the handoff line, while Sefa’s archived responsibility remained visible. Records preserved both the unfinished state and who accepted it next.

Bell returned alone after checking Dorian. "Gold-scar event: brief light. No edge. No new spread. He is done with this review."

Harun looked toward the corridor. "He all right?"

"Same restrictions. No upgrade. No more exposure."

Sefa added the Medical stop to the review record and did not ask Dorian to sign it.

The next problem arrived before the paperwork finished. A runner from the lower workshop entered and reported water beneath the western valve rack.

Bellan stood automatically. Sefa caught his sleeve.

"Who has the valve assignment?"

He stopped. The shift sheet showed Nera Voss checking the western feed line until second bell. The bell had rung six minutes earlier, but no completion mark appeared and no handoff had been entered.

Under the old protocol, the absence of an active task holder might have looked like completion. Under the new one, the missing closure was visible.

Bellan used the mechanical wall line. "Nera Voss, report western feed-line status."

Nera answered from the lower workshop. "Stopped at valve three. Seal split. I was getting replacement packing."

"Did you hand off?"

"No."

"Current condition?"

"Valve three open for service. Feed isolated at main."

Bellan looked at Sefa. "Write it." Sefa added the current condition immediately.

NERA VOSS STOPPED AT VALVE THREE.

VALVE THREE OPEN FOR SERVICE.

FEED ISOLATED AT MAIN.

NO HANDOFF COMPLETED.

Facilities sent a new worker with a physical handoff strip before anyone touched the valve. The leak turned out to be runoff trapped beneath the rack, not a failed main line. No emergency followed.

Harun watched the entire exchange from the Records Annex. "That would have been my hand again."

Bellan looked at him. "Possibly." Sefa looked up from the sheet.

Bellan corrected himself. "The old sheet could have made the unfinished valve appear cleared."

"Better," Harun said.

The facts did not make Bellan innocent of the earlier injury. They showed he had changed one behavior because of it.

Back at the treatment-room table, Dorian was already seated with the grey hand resting inside its brace. Harun asked to sign the review note with his left hand, and Bell supported the page so it would not slide while his handwriting leaned badly across the line.

HARUN REVIEWED THE NEW HANDOFF PROCEDURE WHILE MEDICALLY RESTRICTED FROM TOOL USE.

He looked at it. "I hate that sentence."

"Why?" Sefa asked.

"Because it sounds like I’m useful while sitting here."

Dorian looked at him. "You are useful while sitting there."

Harun waited for a joke. None came.

Bellan signed beneath his own line after Harun finished reading the first entry.

BELLAN FAILED TO REASSIGN BOLT FOUR DURING THE INCIDENT THAT INJURED HARUN.

BELLAN PARTICIPATED IN THE CURRENT PROCEDURE REVISION.

THE SECOND FACT DOES NOT REMOVE THE FIRST.

Harun read that one longer. "Keep it."

Bellan nodded.

Bell returned before Harun could hand the page back. She checked the injured fingers again and pressed lightly along the splints until he reported sensation in two places and nothing in the third.

"Tool clearance?" Harun asked.

"No."

"Tomorrow?"

"Not promised."

"Paper?"

"With the left hand."

Harun looked at Sefa. "Records has work?"

Sefa hesitated. "It always has work."

"That was not the question."

She understood. "There are twenty-two action sheets from yesterday that need handoff checks. No tools. No lifting. You can read them and mark missing closures."

Dorian’s grey hand shifted slightly against the brace. "Do not make injured-worker review a role."

Sefa nodded and pulled a blank strip toward Harun. She wrote a current action instead.

HARUN IS REVIEWING YESTERDAY’S TWENTY-TWO ACTION SHEETS FOR MISSING CLOSURES UNTIL THE STACK IS FINISHED OR MEDICAL ENDS THE SESSION.

Harun read it. "How long?"

Bell answered, "Thirty minutes today." Sefa added the limit to the same task record.

MEDICAL STOP: THIRTY MINUTES.

Harun looked at the sentence, then at Sefa. "Expires when the timer ends?"

"Yes."

"Then give me the stack."

Sefa placed the papers on Harun’s left side so he did not need to reach across the injured hand. Bell set a mechanical timer on the table and left the room without asking him to prove that sitting work still counted as work.

At the end of the session, Sefa took down every temporary current-action strip. The archived copies remained in Records, while the live board returned to blank wood.

Dorian looked at the empty hooks. His gold scar remained dark. The names had not disappeared from history; they had simply stopped telling the present what those people had to be.
