Chapter 95 — The Door That Needed a Character

Sponsored

The door introduced itself before Dorian reached it. Black iron letters spread across the plain wood before anyone touched the handle.

I AM THE WESTERN POSTERN.

Beneath them, a second line formed with less patience.

GATEKEEPER REQUIRED.

Facilities West had contained a laundry junction, two supply rooms, and a staircase before the door arrived. Now the staircase ended against the postern. Three Facilities workers were trapped on the far side, and Dorian could hear one of them striking the wood with a hammer.

Lina stopped the latch cart several paces back. "Open it."

"Do not touch the handle," Dorian said.

His right hand remained locked open inside the brace. The grey little finger had already bent toward the word GATEKEEPER. No gold light had appeared yet, but the movement was enough.

Harun set down the replacement metal he had been carrying. "Facilities says this is Story Custody pressure."

"Facilities says many things after they happen."

Pavel stood beneath the low ceiling in his blue coat. Thin streams of water climbed from his sleeves and gathered overhead instead of falling. Housing had approved his one-door room only days earlier, and he had come to Facilities because the physical bell over that door needed a different bracket.

"The trapped workers are shouting names," Pavel said.

Dorian listened while the hammer struck the other side again. The voices were close enough that the wood should have carried their breathing.

"Lina!" someone called from the other side.

Another voice hit the door with something heavy. "Harun, the stairs are gone!"

The postern changed before either apprentice answered, turning a shouted name into a role offer.

LINA — GATEKEEPER CANDIDATE.

Lina stepped backward. The letters followed her across the grain as if the wood had always known how to spell her name.

"Use my name," Dorian said.

Lina looked at him. "That is my name."

He caught the mistake. "State what you are doing."

Understanding crossed Lina's face. She looked directly at the door instead of the title.

"I am standing in Facilities West. I am carrying screws. I am not opening that door."

The candidate line flickered. Black iron broke around the edges of her name, then disappeared.

The postern tried Harun next, replacing Lina's vanished line with another assignment.

HARUN — WATCHMAN.

Harun looked down at the replacement plate in his hands. "I am holding replacement metal. I am not watching anything for you." The line weakened and vanished before he finished lowering the plate.

Pavel's turn came last, and the door used the contamination already visible above his head.

PAVEL — KEEPER OF THE RAIN GATE.

He looked up at the water collecting across the ceiling. "That sounds better than my actual job."

Dorian's grey index finger moved inside the brace. "Do not joke with it."

Pavel looked at him, then at the door. "I am Pavel. I carried onions yesterday. I want a room with one door." The role disappeared, but the postern stayed shut.

A trapped worker struck the other side again. "Smoke!"

No smoke escaped the frame. The room beyond might not contain fire, but the people behind the door believed something was burning, and Dorian had no reason to treat that belief as theatre.

He approached until the painted Medical line on the floor stopped him. The restriction printed there made the distance impossible to ignore.

NO CANON-ROLE RESIDUE WITHIN FIFTY FEET.

The postern had appeared twelve feet away. His restriction had already been violated by the building before he made a choice about proximity.

Dorian pulled the physical bell cord mounted beside the laundry junction. It connected to the medical observer assigned to his Facilities shifts, and he rang twice. No answer came before the gold scar under his grey palm lit.

A thin white edge formed near the open hand and pointed toward GATEKEEPER REQUIRED. Dorian took one step back.

Lina saw the light. "Back."

He moved farther. The white edge stayed near the door instead of following immediately.

Harun watched it from behind the cart. "Do not use it."

"I know."

The words on the postern shifted again, abandoning the individual names for a larger custody demand.

UNREPRESENTED STORY SUBJECT PRESENT.

APPOINT REPRESENTATIVE TO OPEN.

The hammering stopped. A different voice spoke from behind the wood, lower and rougher than the three Facilities workers Dorian had heard so far.

"Who told you I needed a representative?"

Dorian looked at Pavel. "You heard that?"

"Yes."

The trapped workers began shouting again, their voices overlapping the unfamiliar one.

"We are here!"

"Do not leave us!"

Dorian counted four distinct voices. There had been three workers, and the fourth did not sound like Facilities.

Achebe arrived at a run without a weapon. Two security officers followed with physical shields and stopped before the painted Medical boundary. She read the door once.

"Story Custody is surfacing a protected subject relation."

Dorian pointed toward the trapped side. "Explain after we get the workers out."

"Agreed."

Achebe tried the physical override built into the hallway lock plate. The handle refused her hand.

INDEPENDENT WARDEN NOT STORY REPRESENTATIVE.

The door offered another route after refusing Achebe's authority.

CURRENT AUTHOR MAY ACCEPT TEMPORARY REPRESENTATION.

Elias was two levels away and medically restricted. Dorian did not ask for him.

He looked at the wall surrounding the postern. "Remove the door without opening it."

Facilities supervisor Bellan arrived behind Achebe carrying a masonry kit. "The frame may be scene-bound."

"The wall?"

"Ordinary stone before this morning."

"Then cut around it."

The white edge beside Dorian's hand sharpened at the word cut. It lengthened toward the nearest black letter.

Dorian moved behind the latch cart. "Not me."

Bellan did not argue. He called for masonry hammers and a manual brace.

The postern reacted to Bellan's order before the first hammer arrived.

COLLAPSE OF FRAME ENDANGERS SUBJECT.

Achebe stepped closer without touching the wood. "Which subject?" The door gave her nothing.

"Workers?" Achebe asked. No response followed. "Unrepresented person?"

The letters warmed without supplying a name.

Pavel moved toward the wall before Security could decide whether to stop him. "I can check the frame."

Achebe looked at him. "How?"

He raised one wet sleeve. "Water still knows stone."

She considered the physical distance and the absence of any role printed over him. "Your choice."

Pavel touched the wall beside the door. His upward rain climbed the stone in thin silver lines. Most of the water stopped at the frame. One narrow stream slipped behind the upper hinge and continued into the original stairwell wall.

"This part is physical," Pavel said.

Dorian pointed with his left hand. "Follow the wet line."

Bellan placed the first masonry chisel above the hinge. A worker struck it. Stone cracked.

The postern screamed through every letter at once, spreading its demand beyond the doorframe.

GATEKEEPER REQUIRED.

WATCHMAN REQUIRED.

AUTHOR REQUIRED.

READER REQUIRED.

The roles spread beyond the door. Black words printed across nearby shirts, toolboxes, shields, and the laundry wall. One title crawled across the side of the latch cart.

Dorian's gold scar flared. The invisible white edge moved toward the nearest word and crossed the floor between Lina's boots.

She jumped back.

"Cover them!" Dorian shouted.

Harun threw a canvas drop cloth over WATCHMAN. Pavel sent his upward rain across the ceiling and blurred READER until the letters ran into one another. Achebe planted a physical shield against AUTHOR, hiding the word beneath plain metal.

The edge changed direction each time a role disappeared, searching for another target. Dorian caught his grey wrist with his left hand while the brace remained open around the palm. The cut did not care.

"Take me out."

Lina moved first. She grabbed the back of his adaptive shirt instead of his damaged arm. Harun caught the tool harness across Dorian's chest, and together they dragged him around the corridor turn.

The invisible edge followed halfway, then turned back toward the postern. Dorian stayed out of sight and kept both hands away from the corridor opening. He made no attempt to convert the trigger into a weapon because the emergency had finally made it useful.

He sat on the floor with his back against the stone and called instructions around the corner. "Upper hinge first. Leave the handle. Brace the stone with the latch cart."

Bellan used the cart as a support frame. Pavel redirected water through the growing opening to show where the original cavity continued. Achebe and Security held the wall brace while Facilities removed stone around the frame.

The trapped workers shouted less once they heard the masonry breaking. One of them coughed repeatedly. The fourth voice said nothing else.

The postern remained closed while Facilities removed the entire door with three feet of surrounding masonry attached. It came away from the corridor like a section of stage scenery ripped out whole. Behind it stood the original staircase.

Three Facilities workers crouched on the landing. One had a burn across his sleeve from a scene that no longer existed. Another held the hammer Dorian had heard. The third had both hands over his mouth against smoke nobody outside could see.

The fourth person was not there. Only a shadow remained beneath the stairs where the extra voice should have come from.

Security did not order the workers to identify themselves before crossing. Bellan called them through one at a time. None accepted Gatekeeper, Watchman, Author, Reader, or any other role the door had tried to distribute.

As the last worker reached the corridor, the postern detached from the masonry around it. Wood became black paper. The iron bands flattened into chapter margins.

The entire object folded inward until only one blank tab remained on the floor. Nothing on the tab named the workers who had crossed.

Dorian did not return immediately. Medical finally answered the physical bell after the crisis had already moved past the point where their presence would have prevented exposure. The observer came to him at the corridor turn and checked the scar before allowing him closer.

The grey hand remained lit for nine minutes. No cut struck a person.

Lina waited beside him while the light faded. "You good?"

"No."

"Can you walk?"

"Yes."

"Want the harness?"

Dorian looked down at the strap Harun had used to pull him clear. "Leave it." Lina left it where it was and did not ask again.

Achebe lifted the blank tab with physical tongs. One line appeared across it.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN.

SUBJECT OUTCOME UNRESOLVED.

Elias's accountability correction had acknowledged a wounded guard whose fate he had never actually chosen. The old public answer claiming the guard died had been withdrawn as false. Story Custody had found the empty place created by that correction.

Dorian looked beneath the original staircase. The shadow was still there, darker than the surrounding stone even after the postern had collapsed.

Nobody appointed a representative. Nobody named it after the guard in the old comment. Achebe kept the tab isolated while Bellan checked the staircase for physical damage.

The shadow moved once, and a fist struck the underside of the landing hard enough to shake dust from the stair. A voice followed through the stone, faint and angry.

"I am not your gatekeeper."
