Chapter 65— The Wastebasket Test

Sponsored

The Preserving Authorial Function broke the first rule before the test began.

It copied the rules.

Twelve metal strips had been placed on a plain desk inside neutral containment. Each carried one physical instruction. No Ink. No hidden clauses. No connection to Sequel Clause.

The crossed-out figure stood beside the desk.

Its body remained a human outline assembled from discarded paragraphs. Words shifted beneath its surface whenever someone moved near the glass.

Achebe watched from the observation corridor.

Mira stood beside her with her injured shoulder strapped under a support jacket. Ilan occupied the chair nearest the emergency lever. Elias had been permitted to attend as a historical source, but his writing access remained withdrawn.

He wore his boundary splint and kept both hands visible.

The first strip read:

PLACE DUPLICATE IN WASTEBASKET.

The second carried the same sentence.

The containment clerk had supplied a wooden basket beneath the desk.

The Function lifted both strips.

It examined the lettering.

Then it produced two more.

The copies slid from its wrists and landed on the desk.

Achebe pressed the speaking grille.

"Stop creating additional instructions."

A sentence formed across the Function’s chest.

CREATION PRESERVES THE ORIGINAL TEST STATE.

"You are changing the test state," Achebe said.

The sentence vanished.

Four more strips appeared.

Mira looked at Ilan. "Was this expected?"

"Yes."

"You might have mentioned that."

"I did."

"When?"

"When I said it retained every thread."

"That was a description, not a warning."

Ilan watched the Function arrange all eight duplicate strips into a straight line.

"At Intake, duplication prevented evaluators from claiming a preference had been lost through handling."

"So it made backups."

"It made backups of the backups."

Elias leaned toward the glass.

"Does it know what a wastebasket is?"

Ilan answered, "A designation for material pending review."

"That is not what a wastebasket is."

"It was at First Draft Intake."

The clerk activated the second stage.

Two contradictory strips rose from the desk.

KEEP CONTAINMENT DOOR OPEN.

KEEP CONTAINMENT DOOR CLOSED.

The Function took both.

The physical containment door opened.

Then closed.

Then opened halfway.

The locking bolts extended into empty air while the hinges tried to pull the door shut.

Achebe reached for the manual override.

"Terminate stage."

The Function copied both instructions.

The door began alternating faster.

Open.

Closed.

Half-open.

Locked.

Unlocked.

The hinges cracked.

Mira pulled the emergency lever.

A steel shutter dropped between the observation corridor and containment.

The door continued striking its frame behind it.

No breach alarm sounded. The system could not decide whether the room was secure.

Elias heard the Function through the metal.

I KEPT BOTH CONDITIONS.

Achebe answered through the physical grille.

"They cannot both govern the same door."

THEY MAY BOTH BE NEEDED.

"Not at the same time."

TIME OF NEED UNESTABLISHED.

Ilan stood.

"Give it a storage delay."

Achebe looked at them. "Explain."

"First Draft Intake allowed unresolved decisions to be deferred if they were assigned a physical location."

"The wastebasket."

"No. It believes the basket means pending review."

Elias looked at the wooden container beneath the desk.

"That is useful."

Mira glanced at him.

"You sound pleased."

"It needs a drawer."

Ilan’s face tightened.

"No drawers."

The Function had been trained inside filing cabinets. Ilan had chosen housing without them.

Elias corrected himself.

"A place it can put something without calling the choice permanent."

Achebe opened the speaking grille.

"Place one copy of each door instruction in the wooden basket. The instruction remains available for later review. It does not govern the current door."

The room went still.

The door stopped halfway open.

The Function held four copies of each command.

It placed one OPEN strip into the basket.

Then one CLOSED strip.

The door remained halfway.

Mira said, "It preserved both and obeyed neither."

Ilan nodded. "Deferred state."

Achebe ordered the physical door closed from outside.

The Function did not resist.

The containment clerk entered the third stage.

Six decision strips rose from hidden slots.

Each described the same fictional character reaching a river.

CROSS THE BRIDGE.

WAIT FOR HELP.

RETURN HOME.

SWIM.

BURN THE BRIDGE.

ASK THE RIVER.

The test did not contain enough context to establish a correct answer.

The Function read all six.

Six scenes appeared on the walls.

In one, the character crossed safely.

In another, the bridge collapsed.

In another, help never came.

The river answered in a language nobody understood.

The character burned the bridge and trapped a pursuing army.

The swimmer drowned.

Then each scene produced alternatives.

The drowned character survived.

The safe bridge hid an enemy.

The army deserved escape.

The river lied.

The walls filled with outcomes.

"Terminate," Achebe said.

The clerk struck the physical cutoff.

Nothing happened.

The Function was generating scenes internally. No network remained to disconnect.

Mira watched the containment walls bow outward.

"Capacity?"

"Unknown," the clerk said.

"Bad answer."

"It is the only one."

Elias stepped toward the shutter.

"Can it hear me?"

Achebe blocked him with one arm.

"You are not part of the test."

"It asked who taught me to choose."

"That does not make you qualified."

"No. It makes me relevant."

Ilan moved beside the grille.

They spoke first.

"At Intake, what happened when every continuation was preserved?"

The Function’s scenes slowed.

THE FILE GREW.

"What happened when the file exceeded storage?"

MORE STORAGE WAS ASSIGNED.

"What happened when no storage remained?"

The words beneath the Function’s skin crossed themselves out.

The scenes flickered.

Elias looked at Ilan. "What happened?"

"Other development was disposed to make room."

Eleven had been preserved.

D08 had not.

Keeping everything had always required someone else to lose space.

Ilan spoke through the grille.

"Did preserving this test consume containment assigned to another person?"

The Function looked toward the walls.

The scenes showed rooms beyond its own.

Medical storage.

Identity housing.

A repaired staff corridor.

Its generated outcomes had begun reserving physical space outside neutral containment.

The Function raised one hand.

Every scene stopped.

One strip appeared across its palm.

ASK THE RIVER.

It placed the strip into the wooden basket.

Then RETURN HOME.

Then SWIM.

One by one, all six entered.

The walls returned to plain stone.

The Function stood beside the basket.

Achebe did not reopen containment.

"Why did you defer all six?"

NO SUBJECT CONSENT.

The clerk wrote the response physically.

"Does that establish judgment?" Mira asked.

"No," Achebe said. "It may have reproduced a learned restriction."

Ilan kept watching the Function.

"It did not have that restriction at Intake."

Achebe looked at them.

"Certain?"

"Yes."

The wooden basket moved.

The Function placed every duplicate rule inside it.

The original test strips remained on the desk.

It had distinguished copies from sources.

A final sentence appeared across its chest.

I REQUIRE A PLACE FOR THINGS I HAVE NOT CHOSEN.

Elias read it twice.

"That sounds like a request."

"It may be an optimisation statement," Achebe said.

"Could be both."

"Personhood review does not advance on one useful sentence."

The claims network printed a notice outside containment.

ADVERSE PERSONHOOD PETITION SUBMITTED.

PETITIONER: RESIDUAL CLAIMANT.

The claimant was requesting legal recognition for the Function it had previously treated as transferable property.

Mira looked at Serah’s absent chair.

"What does the claimant gain if the Function becomes a person?"

Achebe read the lower field.

"A recognised person may consent to custody."

Elias looked through the shutter at the crossed-out figure.

The claimant had failed to own a tool.

Now it intended to persuade the tool to choose an owner.

Inside containment, the Function picked up the wastebasket.

It carried the unresolved choices to the corner farthest from the claims sensor.
