Chapter 58— Cylinder One Hundred and Thirteen
Cylinder One Hundred and Thirteen began with twelve seconds of silence.
Tobias Quill listened to all twelve.
He sat at the fixed table in secured records housing. The transparent partition had been replaced with iron bars after the route credential was terminated. Achebe said the change was practical.
Tobias said it lacked imagination.
Eleven occupied a chair on the other side.
They had asked to attend every cylinder directly connected to ASH–31. Achebe approved on the condition that Eleven could leave at any time and owed no testimony.
Mira stood near the door.
Serah attended under visitor restrictions with her bandaged palm resting on the leather case she was no longer permitted to open.
The mechanical reader clicked.
A voice began.
Not Operator Quill.
Not Tobias.
A woman spoke in a hurry.
"Revision map acquired. Public copy diverged twice before Chapter Twelve."
Achebe stopped the cylinder.
"Source?"
The archive clerk inspected its physical edge.
"Internal Strip Floor transfer. Speaker designation removed."
"Continue."
The woman’s voice returned.
"Comparison map includes author edits, deleted material, abandoned continuations, and unsent reader responses."
Eleven looked toward Tobias.
"The verification source."
"Possibly," he said.
Mira said, "Do not make them one mechanism."
"I said possibly."
The recording continued.
A masked voice answered.
The same purchaser filter recovered from the ASH–31 extraction.
"Can it authenticate a future claimant?"
"Not alone."
"What is required?"
"Behavioural revision sample from the living author or a successor accepted by the map."
Elias had produced that sample decades later in route time, days later in the Margins.
The recording was old.
The process had been prepared to compare someone in the future.
Serah leaned forward.
"Repeat that section."
The archive clerk wound the cylinder back.
"Behavioural revision sample from the living author or a successor accepted by the map."
Achebe stopped it again.
"This establishes one fact."
Mira nodded.
"The verification source may be a retained revision map."
"May," Serah said. "The recording describes one. We still lack proof the current verification process uses the same map."
Eleven asked, "What is a successor?"
Tobias answered.
"Someone the system recognises as continuing the authorial function."
"Child?"
"Could be."
"Editor?"
"Could be."
"Owner?"
"Could be, if procedure treats ownership as authorship."
Eleven’s mouth tightened.
"Bad procedure."
"Yes."
Achebe restarted the recording.
The woman asked, "Reader map?"
"Separate."
"Route claim?"
"Separate."
"Purchaser access?"
"Sealed."
Three distinct fields existed in the old record.
That supported the current reports.
It did not prove they had remained separate afterward.
The masked voice said:
"Preserve all four."
The cylinder clicked.
The next line had been physically gouged away.
Tobias’s eyes moved to the damage before the archive clerk mentioned it.
Mira noticed.
"You know what was removed."
"No answer."
Eleven stood.
"You always say that when the answer matters."
"Yes."
"Does it involve me?"
Tobias looked at them.
"Yes."
"Then I am asking."
He rubbed his thumb across the edge of the fixed table.
"The recording listed development assets."
"How many?"
"Three."
Eleven already knew three unwritten paths had been consumed to sustain the old hold.
"What codes?"
Tobias did not answer.
Achebe placed a route inventory beside him.
"D11 was Eleven."
"Yes."
"The other two?"
He looked toward the mechanical reader.
"D08 and D19."
The archive clerk entered the codes.
D08 returned:
DISPOSAL CONFIRMED.
D19 returned:
TRANSFERRED BEFORE HOLD CONVERSION.
Eleven read both.
"What were they?"
"D08 was an alternate opening narrator."
"Person?"
"Uncertain."
"What happened?"
"Disposed."
No softened word.
No promise that deeper records might restore them.
"And D19?"
Tobias looked at Serah.
"Claims witness."
Serah’s fingers tightened around the leather case.
"Human?"
"Development character."
"Name?"
"No answer."
Eleven moved closer to the bars.
"Did Elias write them?"
"Possibly."
"Did you preserve them?"
"No."
"Who transferred them?"
Tobias did not answer.
Achebe returned to Cylinder One Hundred and Thirteen.
"What was gouged from the line?"
Tobias’s face went still.
"The destination of D19."
"Which was?"
"No answer."
Mira stepped forward.
"You recognised the masked purchaser voice on earlier cylinders."
"No answer."
"Same person?"
"I cannot prove it."
"That is not what I asked."
Tobias looked at the bars.
"Yes."
The room changed.
Serah asked, "Identity?"
"No answer."
"Organisation?"
"No answer."
"Relationship to you?"
Tobias smiled without warmth.
"Bad."
Eleven sat again.
"Play the rest."
The archive clerk turned the cylinder.
The masked purchaser spoke after the gouged section.
"If the living author returns, do not inform him of the witness transfer."
The woman asked, "Reason?"
"Original authors overvalue rejected material."
Tobias’s natural voice entered from farther away.
"They are people when they speak."
The masked voice replied:
"They are costs when they remain."
Tobias said, "That sentence does not become true because it fits a ledger."
A sharp impact followed.
Someone had struck him.
The credential voice replaced his natural one.
"Operator Quill acknowledges purchaser authority."
Eleven stared through the bars.
"You objected."
"Yes."
"Then obeyed."
"Yes."
"Then wrote my cage."
"Yes."
Every part remained.
Resistance did not erase participation.
The cylinder’s final line came from the unnamed woman.
"Revision map sealed under authorial escrow. Reader access retained for comparison."
Achebe stopped the recording.
One new technical fact had been established:
A revision map existed separately from the reader map and route claim when ASH–31 entered escrow.
The current verification process might descend from it.
No identity was proven.
The cylinder released a hidden metal strip when the playback ended.
The strip had been trapped beneath the final gear.
D19 TRANSFER DESTINATION.
Every person looked at Tobias.
He had known it was there.
The archive clerk unfolded the strip.
Most of the destination had been burned away.
One phrase remained.
FIRST DRAFT INTAKE.
Mira read it.
"First Draft?"
Tobias spoke before anyone turned the phrase into cosmology.
"Department name."
"What did it do?" Achebe asked.
"Processed development material before Canon registration."
"Inside the Strip Floor system?"
"Yes."
"Still active?"
"I don’t know."
"Location?"
"No answer."
Eleven looked at him.
"You knew the strip was hidden."
"Yes."
"You let us play one hundred and twelve cylinders first."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Tobias met their eyes.
"Because D19 may remember me more clearly than you did."
The mechanical reader clicked.
Cylinder One Hundred and Fourteen slid into the tray by itself.
Its physical label read:
ASH–31 — D19 RETURN REQUEST.
