WORLD OF FICTION (WOF)

The Preserving Function learned the candidate's prepared name from a maintenance worker who did not know it was secret. He arrived to replace a damaged ventilation plate above neutral containment with six screws in his mouth, a ladder under one arm, and a paper routing slip tucked into his belt. The slip had been folded incorrectly, leaving one line visible through the containment glass.

BENEFICIARY CERTIFICATE: S—

The rest of the name appeared when the worker bent to place the ladder. The Function looked at it, and its right wrist opened before the containment clerk understood what had happened. A metal strip began forming beneath the crossed-out text.

"Stop," the clerk said.

The maintenance worker froze on the second rung and took the screws out of his mouth. "What?"

"Do not move."

The Function gripped its own wrist while three letters appeared on the strip after S. The clerk could not read them from the observation desk, but the Function could. The room had not been prepared for a confidentiality test: Ilan was elsewhere, Eleven was working through housing labels, and Achebe was attending successor-hearing preparation.

Only an accidental disclosure had entered containment, along with a process that had already demonstrated it preserved information automatically before deciding whether preservation was wanted. The Function tore the unfinished strip free, and paragraphs along its hand broke apart where the metal separated. It placed the strip face down on the desk beside the cracked cup.

The clerk crossed the room and covered the worker's routing slip with a blank evidence sleeve. "Did you read the complete name?"

YES.

"Was it the certificate beneficiary?"

LABEL INDICATES YES.

"Do you recognise it?"

The Function waited while the crossed-out lines over its chest tightened and separated again.

POSSIBLE MATCHES EXIST.

The clerk kept their voice level. "Do not state them."

CONSENT BASIS?

The question stopped the clerk more effectively than an argument would have. They had ordered secrecy without establishing whose boundary applied. The beneficiary named by the trust had rejected the prepared identity, Rin had refused it as current, and the trust still treated the name as protected succession data, but no person in the room had accepted ownership of it.

The clerk narrowed the instruction. "The person who received that name refused it. Repeating the name may impose an identity they rejected."

The Function looked at the face-down strip before answering.

NAME BELONGS TO CERTIFICATE.

"Yes."

NOT NECESSARILY TO RECIPIENT.

"Yes."

The worker remained halfway up the ladder. "Should I leave?"

The clerk looked at the open ventilation cavity above containment. Air moved through the exposed grate, but the repair could wait. "Yes."

"I haven't replaced the plate."

"Leave the ladder."

He climbed down and stepped away from the routing slip while the clerk sealed it inside an evidence sleeve. Before leaving the outer room, the worker demonstrated with a blank sheet how he had tucked the routing slip under his belt because both hands were occupied. No one had instructed him to expose the line, and that fact entered the maintenance report beside the disclosure itself.

The clerk asked him to sign a physical acknowledgment that he had seen restricted identity information and to agree not to repeat it pending consent review. He signed.

The worker glanced through the observation window. "Is it going to get me in trouble?"

"You exposed restricted information," the clerk said. "The review will decide what consequence follows."

"I didn't know."

"That will be in the report too."

He nodded, dissatisfied but not arguing, and left by the physical door. The clerk watched until the latch closed before returning to the containment desk.

The Function picked up the unfinished strip. The disposal slot stood three paces away, yet it carried the strip back to the cracked cup and placed it underneath instead. Hidden, preserved, and undisclosed remained three different facts about the same piece of metal.

The clerk watched the cup settle over it. "Why keep it?"

EVIDENCE OF ASSIGNED IDENTITY.

"Can the evidence be kept without the name?"

The Function considered. It pulled the strip from beneath the cup, turned it face down, and produced a second strip containing only a summary.

A BENEFICIARY NAME WAS EXPOSED WITHOUT THE RECIPIENT'S CONSENT.

No letters from the name appeared. No identity claim or possible matches were included. The Function left the summary on its desk and carried the original toward the furnace.

The disposal control stopped it at the final step because destruction of another person's identity record required authorization from the person whose information would be destroyed. The recipient was absent, Rin could not be contacted through the exhausted permission, and the beneficiary on the certificate had no accepted current identity. The clerk had no authority to consent for them, while the Function still lacked established personhood status that would make its own property decision straightforward.

Procedure stalled where the harm became irreversible. The Function displayed two lines while the furnace remained cold.

KEEPING NAME MAY HARM.

DESTROYING EVIDENCE MAY HARM.

The wastebasket waited beside the desk. The Function placed the original strip inside instead of burning it, leaving the decision deferred and the information contained but present. The nonidentifying summary remained outside the basket so investigators could know an exposure had happened without learning the name.

Hours later, the residual claimant submitted an inquiry through the covered claims channel. The Function turned toward the covered sensor before the clerk had decided whether to answer.

DID CONTAINMENT RECEIVE BENEFICIARY IDENTITY DATA?

The Function looked at the message before the clerk answered. A single word formed across its chest.

YES.

The clerk raised one hand. "Do you intend to send that?"

The Function looked at the sentence, crossed YES out, and replaced it with a narrower response.

UNAUTHORIZED IDENTITY EXPOSURE OCCURRED.

The clerk asked, "Will you state the name?"

NO.

The claimant replied immediately.

NAME REQUIRED TO VERIFY SUCCESSOR PROFILE.

The Function's damaged arm shook. It had been built to preserve material for continuation and succession, and the hidden name could help identify the candidate the trust intended to present. Denying it might even weaken the Errata's own challenge if the name connected the certificate to an earlier process.

The same disclosure could force a rejected identity back onto Rin or another person who had never chosen it. The Function answered with the boundary it could actually establish.

RECIPIENT REJECTED CERTIFICATE NAME.

The claimant replied:

REJECTION VALIDITY UNDETERMINED.

The Function copied that sentence onto a physical strip and held it between both hands. After several seconds, it placed the copy into the wastebasket beside the hidden name.

The claimant asked again.

DISCLOSE CERTIFICATE NAME.

The Function replied:

NO.

No alternative or explanation followed for the claimant to argue with. The claims sensor then attempted to open an observation route, and the steel cover over it rattled once. The Function grabbed the cracked cup and struck the covered plate, splitting the ceramic farther along its existing fracture while the attempted route failed.

Achebe arrived six minutes later. The maintenance ladder still stood beneath the exposed ventilation cavity, the cracked cup had a new white line along its side, and the original name remained inside the wastebasket. She read the clerk's physical notes from beginning to end before asking questions.

"Did anyone else see the name?"

"The maintenance worker."

"Contained?"

The clerk shook their head. "Not a prisoner."

Achebe looked up. "Meaning?"

"He was stopped, informed the line was restricted, and asked not to repeat it pending consent review."

"Did he agree?"

"Yes."

"Voluntarily?"

"Yes."

Achebe looked through the glass. "Function?"

"Read it," the clerk said. "Preserved the original in the wastebasket. Created a nonidentifying summary. Refused claimant disclosure."

Achebe stepped to the speaking grille. "Will you tell me the name?"

WHY?

"To compare it with existing evidence."

RECIPIENT HAS NOT ACCEPTED IT.

"That is true."

DISCLOSURE MAY STILL ESTABLISH WHO PREPARED THE CERTIFICATE.

"That is also true."

The Function touched the wastebasket. Achebe waited instead of repeating the request, and no name appeared.

REQUEST RECIPIENT CONSENT.

"We have no contact route."

THEN WAIT.

Achebe looked toward the hearing schedule clipped beside the observation desk. Four days remained, and waiting weakened the Errata's ability to challenge the successor candidate. The claimant already possessed the prepared name, meaning the Function's silence disadvantaged the investigation more than the opposing side. None of that created consent.

Achebe returned to the grille. "I disagree with your choice."

ACKNOWLEDGED.

"I may seek an independent order."

ACKNOWLEDGED.

"If granted, you may be required to disclose."

The Function's paragraphs tightened across its chest.

WILL REFUSAL BE RECORDED?

"Yes."

WILL DISCLOSURE STILL OCCUR?

Achebe did not promise protection she could not guarantee. "Possibly."

The Function carried the cracked cup to the corner farthest from the covered claims sensor. Its new fracture remained visible between both hands while a final sentence appeared.

THEN THE RECORD MUST SHOW IT WAS NOT GIVEN.

Achebe entered those exact words with the time, her request, and the Function's refusal. She did not translate refusal into personhood, innocence, or authority.

Personhood remained unestablished, and the prepared name remained undisclosed to the Errata. The Function had protected a person it could not contact by using a boundary no procedure had assigned it, while whether that action reflected judgment, imitation, learned opposition, or some mixture remained unresolved.

The successor hearing lost one possible advantage, while the claimant lost nothing it did not already possess. The Function still refused.
