At zero hours, the Errata stopped recognising Elias as a Proofreader.
The title vanished from his tag.
Then his room assignment.
Then his medical access.
The observation bed beneath him rose upright because the system no longer recognised an assigned patient.
Elias slid onto the floor.
His boundary splint locked halfway down.
Mira caught the frame with her left hand before it crushed his injured leg.
"Manual control!"
The nurse struck the emergency lever.
Nothing happened.
PATIENT RECORD UNDER AUDIT.
The final tooth inside Serah’s leather case dropped.
Across the observation ward, every door displayed the same status.
ELIAS VANCE — ASSOCIATION DISPUTED.
His body remained solid.
The manual personhood petition held.
The building had simply withdrawn every service connected to his registration.
Oxygen support dimmed.
Medical monitors released their contacts.
The curtain track opened and refused to close.
Achebe entered with two brass override bars.
"Physical systems only."
Staff moved.
They lowered the bed by hand.
A nurse restarted the oxygen pump with a foot pedal.
Mira unlocked the boundary splint before its rods could pull the Blank mark higher.
She held Elias’s ankle in position while the replacement brace was reset.
Serah stood at the end of the ward.

"You said the accepted sample would preserve his registration," Mira said.
"I said it allowed appeal."
"Then appeal."
"We need escrow terms."
Achebe placed the Sequel Clause case on a wheeled steel table.

Serah looked at her.
"No."
Mira stayed beside Elias’s leg.
"What happens in escrow?"
"Neither party may activate, transfer, dismantle, test, or derive new samples from Sequel Clause."
Elias pushed himself upright.
"It already does nothing."
"Then you lose nothing operationally."
"It is still mine."
Serah did not argue.
"That is the question being appealed."
The wall printed:
ESCROW REQUIRED TO RESTORE CONTESTED REGISTRATION.
Elias read it.
The system did not demand his body.
It demanded the one physical thing that connected his current identity to the Story.
"Can I refuse?" he asked.
"Yes," Serah said.
Achebe looked at her.
She continued.
"Refusal preserves your personhood hold for its remaining duration. Registration services remain withdrawn. The claimant may then request direct recovery of the Bookmark."
"Direct?"
"Through authorized retrieval."
Mira’s hand closed around the splint key.
"No."
Serah’s eyes moved to the key.
"I did not recommend it."
That was the first time she had stated a preference.
Achebe inserted the Errata lock into the neutral case.
"Escrow. Seven days. No transfer beyond this building."
"Fourteen," Serah said.
"Seven."
"The claimant will reject seven."
"Then the claimant can identify itself."
Serah considered.
"Ten."
Achebe accepted.
The claimant lock required no visible key.
A claim cylinder slid into the second housing.
The case sealed.

TEN DAYS.
Elias’s Bookmark mark burned beneath his sternum.
The physical strip did not move.

The thirty-one ridges on the sealed object dimmed one after another.
The fifth reader trace stopped at Chapter Eleven.
The residual route claimant remained active.
The authorial verification source printed the accepted sample result again.

Serah placed Elias’s accepted authorial sample into the appeal slot.
Achebe placed the manual personhood petition beside it.

"What conflict?"

"That is not a conflict," Elias said. "People can have jobs."

"I am beginning to notice."
The building attempted to resolve the contradiction.

The final line changed.

Elias’s left arm faded to the elbow.
The nurse swore.

Dorian arrived under escort.
Facilities dust covered his clothes. His grey right hand remained open inside the brace.
He saw Elias’s arm.
"What do you need?"
Achebe answered.

"We already did that."
"The audit treats his authorship as overriding them."
Dorian looked at the registration plate.
"Then enter the relations again."
"Procedure will reject duplicates," Serah said.
"Do not duplicate."
He stepped toward the physical declaration grille.
The escort blocked him.
Dorian stopped.
He did not shove past.
"Move," he said.
The officer looked at Achebe.
She nodded.
Dorian reached the grille.
"Elias Vance is the man who got me injured."

Elias’s arm returned to the wrist.
Mira understood.
She used the next grille.
"Elias Vance is under movement supervision because he concealed a medical condition."

The transparency retreated to his fingers.
Priya stepped forward.
Lio said her surname when the sensor hesitated.
"Odhiambo."
She placed her engraved badge against the plate.
"Elias Vance objected when I entered his memories."
The ward became still.
Priya continued.
"The objection existed before he knew what ASH–31 was here."

Elias’s hand returned.
Achebe used the final grille.
"Elias Vance is registered under Errata protection because I chose containment over disposal."

The audit plate tried to classify the statements as Story-derived.
Serah opened a hidden section of the reclamation notice.
"Non-transferable living subject provision."
Achebe looked at her.
"You said the body was not claimed."
"It was not."
"Why was this hidden?"
"It was not hidden. Appendix twelve."
Mira laughed once.
No humour.
Serah pressed her physical badge into the notice.
"I certify Elias Vance as a living subject whose disputed authorial rights do not constitute transferable personhood."
The claimant lock on the neutral case flashed red.
Serah’s visitor badge cracked down the centre.
Her authorization was being challenged.
She kept it pressed.
The claims clock spun backward one tooth.

The ward lights returned.

The oxygen support resumed.
The bed lowered.
The doors recognised him as a patient.
Not a Proofreader.
Not an owner.
Not an asset.
A person under temporary protection.
Serah removed her broken badge.
Achebe said, "Your claimant will object."
"Yes."
"You may lose your licence."
"Yes."
"Why help?"
Serah looked at Elias.
"Because reclamation is supposed to recover rights."
She put the cracked badge into her leather case.
"Not people."
The system printed the escrow confirmation.
TEN-DAY APPEAL ACTIVE.
Then a second notice emerged.
The claimant had responded.
Not with a name.
Not with a demand for the Bookmark.

Mira tore the notice from the wall.
"No."
Elias looked at the sealed Sequel Clause.
The fifth reader trace resumed moving.

Achebe folded the notice.

Elias looked at her.

Mira watched him.
