It rolled out of secured storage on a steel cart with no one pushing it.
The wheels followed a line engraved into the floor.
Achebe stepped in front.
The cart stopped.
A claims plate unfolded from its side.

Mira arrived from operations with her injured shoulder locked inside its support jacket.

The room stayed still.
Elias stared.

Achebe placed one hand on the review table.

The plate revealed three.

DO NOT COMPLETE THE DRAGON SENTENCE WITHOUT A WITNESS.
Elias read them.
The first opposed what he had done.
The second reversed his public edit.
The third addressed a sentence he had not completed.
Mira looked at Serah.
"Could this be the retained map producing its own preferred choices?"
"Yes."
"Could it be a purchaser?"
"Yes."
"Could it be another author?"
"Yes."
"Could it be Tobias’s converted hold?"
"Yes."
"Could it be an automated successor?"
"Yes."
Nothing narrowed enough.
The claims plate opened three possible findings.
SOLE AUTHORSHIP — ELIAS VANCE.

PRIOR CLAIMANT OWNERSHIP.
The first required Elias to declare the competing sample fraudulent.
The second accepted that ASH–31 may contain more than one authorial continuity.
The third transferred Sequel Clause when escrow ended unless appeal overturned it.
Achebe said, "We challenge the sample."
"On what basis?" Serah asked.
"No person identified."
"Procedure allows nonpersonal authorial sources."
"That is a flaw."
"It is still the procedure."
Elias looked at the first option.
Sole authorship.
He had written the public Chapters.
He remembered the failures.

He had not remembered the side-gate character until evidence returned it.
Someone or something had preserved decisions he abandoned.

"Pending review," he said.

"That one."
The plate accepted his decision.
The escrow cart stopped preparing for transfer.

THREE ADDITIONAL DAYS GRANTED.
Achebe exhaled.
Mira did not.
The competing sample gained limited standing.
It was allowed one statement.

Elias expected a demand.

Elias read the first line again.
I did not write the Story.

One remaining path was gone.
The other had submitted a return request.
Across the repaired headquarters, Cylinder One Hundred and Fourteen began playing without anyone touching it.
A voice came through every physical speaker.
Not Toby.
Not the masked purchaser.
Not Elias.
"I was told the author would leave us."
The neutral escrow case struck the inside of its locks once.

The voice continued.
