Chapter 42 — Manual Personhood

Elias’s left hand became transparent while he was buttering toast.

The knife stayed visible.

His fingers did not.

He dropped it onto the breakfast tray.

A nurse crossed the observation ward before it finished clattering.

"Do not move."

"I wasn’t planning to leave without my hand."

The nurse pressed two plain metal contacts against his wrist. No Ink passed between them. One measured pulse. The other measured whether the pulse still belonged to the person wearing the wrist.

The second contact stayed dark.

Above the bed, his registration clock read:

TEN HOURS, FORTY-NINE MINUTES UNTIL MANUAL RENEWAL FAILURE.

The countdown had begun at Claims Reception.

Elias flexed his invisible fingers.

The toast moved when he touched it.

"That seems promising."

"Movement is present," the nurse said.

"Is ownership?"

She did not answer.

Mira entered wearing her shoulder support beneath an open coat. Her right arm remained close to her body. The key to Elias’s boundary splint hung alone at her hip.

She looked at his hand.

"New?"

"Breakfast-related."

"Medical answer."

"Yes."

The nurse rotated the second contact.

For one second, Elias’s fingers returned.

Then the transparency climbed over his knuckles.

"The artificial signature is losing renewal priority," she said. "Body continuity remains intact."

Elias looked at the hand.

"Can you translate that into a sentence normal people regret hearing?"

"The building still agrees you have a hand. It is less certain the hand belongs on your record."

Mira pulled the curtain shut around the bed.

"Serah said his body was not part of the claim."

"Claims procedure is not removing it," the nurse replied. "Our renewal system is refusing to extend an identity field connected to disputed authorship."

"That sounds like removal with more paperwork."

"Yes."

Achebe arrived with Serah.

Serah carried the same leather case. Her green coat was dry despite the rain leaking from two repaired floors above. She had replaced her visitor badge with a physically engraved plate.

SERAH — CLAIM REPRESENTATIVE.

No surname.

Elias held up his transparent hand.

"Your neutral procedure is eating breakfast with me."

"It is not neutral."

"You said that yesterday."

"It remains true."

Achebe placed three metal folders on the bedside tray.

"Claims has approved an independent personhood petition."

Mira looked at Serah. "Why wasn’t that included in the first notice?"

"It was."

"Where?"

"Appendix nine."

Achebe’s stare shifted.

Serah opened the leather case and removed a sheet engraved in letters small enough to punish anyone reading them.

Mira said, "You could have mentioned it."

"I represent the claim."

"Not him."

"No."

Serah did not sound pleased about the distinction.

Achebe opened the first folder.

"Personhood and authorship can be separated temporarily. We need three witnesses who recognise Elias through relations independent of ASH–31."

"What counts?" Elias asked.

"Medical treatment. Institutional responsibility. An event involving you that did not depend on your Story."

"The Ember Sovereign was contaminated by my Story."

"Then not that."

"Most people I know met me during it."

"Yes."

The nurse removed the contacts.

Elias’s fingertips stayed invisible.

Achebe continued.

"Each witness accepts liability if the claim later proves they knowingly certified an artifact as a person."

"That seems designed to discourage witnesses."

"It is."

Mira took the first folder.

"I’ll sign."

Serah looked at her shoulder brace.

"Your relation to him includes supervision of the disputed mark and writing access."

"It also includes fitting his splint, reporting his lie, and stopping him from drawing another dash."

"Those may qualify."

"May?"

"The petition decides."

Mira wrote her name left-handed.

The folder warmed.

WITNESS ONE ACCEPTED.

RELATION: MEDICAL AND MOVEMENT SUPERVISION.

Mira returned it.

"Next."

Achebe took the second.

Elias looked at her. "You barely know me."

"I registered you."

"That was after the Story."

"I also struck a rewritten officer to stop him strangling you during the report breach."

"You make a strong first impression."

Achebe signed.

The folder displayed:

WITNESS TWO ACCEPTED.

RELATION: INSTITUTIONAL PROTECTION AND CONTAINMENT.

Serah closed the third folder before anyone reached for it.

"The final witness must possess a relation the claimant can reasonably challenge."

Mira frowned. "Why?"

"Uncontested testimony proves only that the institution agrees with itself."

Achebe understood.

"Dorian."

Elias looked toward the medical corridor.

"No."

Mira said it at the same time.

Elias turned to her.

"He asked not to see me."

"He also completed an incident statement concerning you."

"That does not mean he wants to become responsible for my existence."

Achebe contacted medical.

Dorian arrived ten minutes later under two-person escort.

He wore the open-palm brace. The grey fingers remained half extended. His little finger did not move when he adjusted his balance.

He stopped outside the curtain.

"What?"

Achebe handed him the petition.

Dorian read it.

Then looked at Elias’s missing fingers.

"You picked a dramatic way to skip discipline."

"I have range."

Dorian read the liability clause again.

"No."

Elias expected relief.

It felt worse.

Achebe said, "Reason?"

"I will not claim responsibility for him."

Serah answered, "The petition asks whether he is a person independent of ASH–31."

"I heard you."

Dorian placed the folder on the tray.

"He entered the Canon because of the Story. I was injured because of the Story. Most of what I know about him happened inside it."

Elias said, "Then don’t sign."

Dorian’s grey hand pushed once against the brace.

No click.

No cut.

He looked at the transparent fingers on Elias’s left hand.

"What happens if nobody does?"

The nurse answered. "We can preserve his body manually for several hours. Long-term continuity becomes uncertain."

"Meaning?"

"He may remain conscious while local systems stop assigning his body to the same record."

Dorian stared at Elias.

"You manage to make every injury sound contagious."

"I work hard."

Dorian picked up the folder.

He did not sign.

"What did you do after the Canon?" he asked.

Elias thought.

"I lied about my ankle."

"Not helping."

"I broke a security door."

"Still poor."

"I carried hinges yesterday."

Dorian looked at Mira.

She nodded.

"For Facilities?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Discipline and ordinary duty."

Dorian glanced at the breakfast tray.

"Did he eat anyone?"

"Not yesterday."

He opened the folder.

"My relation is not supervision."

Serah said, "Write the relation you can support."

Dorian held the stylus in his left hand.

He wrote slowly.

Elias Vance is the person who stepped between me and a blade without understanding it.

He paused.

"That sentence makes you sound worse," Elias said.

"It is accurate."

Dorian added:

He caused harm. The Story did not make the decision for him.

Elias stopped smiling.

Dorian finished:

I know who I am angry with.

He signed beneath it.

The folder stayed cold.

Serah read the statement.

"The petition may reject hostility as insufficient relation."

Dorian looked at her.

"Then your procedure cannot tell the difference between a person and a pleasant memory."

The metal warmed.

WITNESS THREE ACCEPTED.

RELATION: PERSONAL GRIEVANCE.

The three folders snapped together.

Elias’s hand returned so suddenly the fingers struck the tray.

Butter smeared across the blanket.

The registration clock changed.

MANUAL PERSONHOOD HOLD: SIX HOURS.

AUTHORIAL STATUS: UNRESOLVED.

Mira looked at the new time.

"Six?"

Serah returned the petition to her case.

"It can be renewed once before final audit."

"Why once?"

"To prevent institutions from preserving disputed material indefinitely through invented social relationships."

Dorian turned toward the door.

Elias said his name.

Dorian stopped but did not look back.

"Thank you."

"I did not do it for you."

"I know."

Dorian left with his escorts.

The transparent contact plate above Elias’s bed remained dark.

His body had been recognised as a person.

His registration still had not accepted him as its author.

Serah closed the leather case.

"You now have six hours to prove a different question."

Elias picked up the butter knife.

His fingers stayed solid around it.

"What question?"

"Whether the person Dorian hates is the same person who wrote ASH–31."
