Chapter 68— All Safe Routes

Sponsored

The Errata had thirty-one exits and only one led outside.

Mira marked the real one with a length of red rope.

"Do not follow signs," she ordered. "Do not follow voices. Keep one hand on the rope."

Staff emerged from damaged offices carrying physical tools, patients, record boxes, and one kettle that refused to remain in the break room.

The claimant’s hearing had spread from neutral containment into headquarters.

Every proposed safety instruction had become an available route.

Evacuate witnesses.

Contain witnesses.

Move the Preserving Function.

Do not move the Preserving Function.

Transfer it to claimant custody.

Place it under Errata protection.

Allow it to choose.

Prevent it from choosing under influence.

The Function had kept all of them.

Corridors branched wherever two instructions disagreed.

One stair climbed into Claims Reception.

Another descended into the same room.

Doors opened onto safer versions of Medical where Elias had never arrived, where Dorian’s arm remained uninjured, where Priya’s surname had never split.

Mira ordered every false door shut.

Some closed.

Others opened wider.

Elias moved along the red rope under escort. His boundary splint dragged whenever a corridor tried to assign him a different registration.

One doorway displayed:

ELIAS VANCE — SOLE AUTHOR.

Another:

ELIAS VANCE — UNRELATED PERSON.

A third:

ASH–31 DERIVATIVE ASSET.

He did not enter any.

Eleven walked beside Ilan.

Neither wore responsive identity plates. Both carried plain engraved names.

Dorian and Pavel emerged from the kitchen covered in flour and hot water.

Dorian’s grey hand remained locked open. A faint white edge hovered near it, turning toward every role label that appeared.

Mira saw it.

"Can you stop it?"

"No."

"Can you aim it?"

"No."

"Then stay behind the rope."

Dorian looked at the staff trapped beyond three branching corridors.

"No."

Mira’s face hardened.

He added, "I can carry people without using it."

That was different.

She assigned two escorts and sent him toward Medical.

The neutral containment room stood at the centre of the branching structure.

The Preserving Function remained inside, holding the wooden wastebasket.

Every deferred strip had returned to its hands.

Its crossed-out body had become denser.

Paragraphs overlapped until no human outline remained clear.

The claimant attended through an empty chair outside containment.

No identity.

No face.

Only procedure.

The hearing plate printed:

QUESTION ONE.

SHOULD THE PRESERVING FUNCTION BE RECOGNISED AS A PERSON?

Two answers appeared.

YES.

NO.

The Function copied both.

Two corridors formed.

One led to a hearing where it possessed full legal standing and consented to claimant custody.

The other led to a ruling where it remained property and transferred automatically.

Both routes ended with the claimant taking it.

Achebe saw the structure.

"This petition is rigged."

Serah stood beside the physical review controls, her suspended licence strip hanging from one hand.

"It is procedurally complete."

"That does not make it fair."

"No."

Ilan approached the containment glass.

"At Intake, they used paired choices like this."

"What happened?" Eleven asked.

"Both outcomes served the purchaser."

The Function raised the YES strip.

Then the NO strip.

It could not discard either.

The branching corridors multiplied.

Mira anchored the red rope to a physical support column.

"Where is the original room?"

Ilan pointed beneath the Function’s feet.

"Everything else is generated from submitted outcomes."

"Can we cut power?"

"No network."

"Remove the strips?"

"It will copy them."

Elias looked at the wooden wastebasket.

"Make it defer the question."

Serah shook her head.

"The claimant petition requires a ruling."

"Then the hearing is the problem."

Achebe struck the physical suspension control.

The empty claimant chair rejected it.

WARDEN CONFLICT OF INTEREST.

Mira tried.

FIELD AUTHORITY INSUFFICIENT.

Serah pressed her broken badge into the review plate.

LICENCE SUSPENDED.

The hearing continued.

QUESTION TWO.

IF PERSONHOOD IS RECOGNISED, WHO PROVIDES CUSTODY DURING DEVELOPMENT?

CLAIMANT.

ERRATA.

The Function copied both.

Two more headquarters grew around them.

In one, uniformed Claims officers entered through authorized gates.

In another, Errata containment sealed every exit and left the Function alone indefinitely.

The Function’s paragraphs moved faster.

I KEPT EVERY SAFE OUTCOME.

Elias spoke through the physical grille.

"They are not all safe."

SAFETY CLAIMED BY SUBMITTING AUTHORITY.

"You know authorities can be wrong."

EVIDENCE EXISTS.

"Evidence of what?"

CONTRADICTORY AUTHORITY.

"That proves disagreement."

The Function held every strip closer.

Around headquarters, corridors folded across one another.

Medical staff led patients along Mira’s red rope.

Dorian reached a treatment bay where three versions of the same injured clerk waited.

Only one cast a physical shadow under the emergency lamps.

He chose the shadowed person.

The other two shouted that he was leaving them.

He did not turn.

His escorts carried the real clerk between them.

The invisible edge near his grey hand swung toward a sign reading RESCUER.

Dorian kicked the sign into a false corridor.

The cut followed it and vanished with the route.

No mastery.

No control.

One dangerous reaction redirected by movement.

Eleven reached the first branching housing hall.

Every door carried their name.

ELEVEN — ERRATA RESIDENT.

ELEVEN — ASH–31 DEVELOPMENT PROPERTY.

ELEVEN — CLAIMANT WITNESS.

ELEVEN — UNREGISTERED.

They tore every plate down except the plain one they had chosen.

The corridor with the engraved physical plate remained.

The others lost shape.

"Names can anchor routes," Eleven said.

Mira heard through the corridor line.

"Use current chosen identifiers only."

Staff began calling rooms and people by names they personally confirmed.

Pavel.

Ilan.

Tobias Quill.

Priya Odhiambo.

The false corridors weakened where labels could not claim them.

Priya stood outside neutral containment with Lio and Senka. She remained suspended.

No total attention.

She watched the physical movement of the routes.

"They all begin from the petition strips."

Ilan nodded.

"The Function treats submission as evidence."

"Can it recognise coercion?"

"Not reliably."

"Can it recognise refusal?"

"Eleven’s refusals affected it."

Eleven stepped to the grille.

"I refuse claimant custody."

The YES corridor flickered.

The Function looked toward them.

CLAIM DOES NOT TARGET ELEVEN.

"It targets someone who cannot refuse properly."

The Function’s body crossed itself out.

Ilan spoke next.

"I refuse to testify that selection equals choice."

Another corridor weakened.

Elias looked at the wastebasket.

The Function had asked for somewhere to place things it had not chosen.

The claimant had built a hearing where every answer benefited the claimant.

"Put the petition in the basket," Elias said.

RULING REQUIRED.

"By whom?"

CLAIMS PROCEDURE.

"Does the procedure permit you to refuse the question?"

NO REFUSAL CHANNEL.

"Then it is not asking for your choice."

The empty claimant chair printed:

SOURCE WITNESS ATTEMPTING UNDUE INFLUENCE.

Elias stepped away from the grille.

"Fine. Don’t listen to me."

Mira looked at him.

He continued.

"Listen to the routes."

The Function turned.

Beyond containment, every safe outcome was causing harm.

Staff were trapped between contradictory doors.

The kitchen existed in four versions.

Medical had duplicated patients.

The red evacuation rope crossed itself at three intersections.

The Function watched.

I KEPT THEM SAFE.

Ilan answered.

"You kept the instructions."

Eleven said, "People are not instructions."

The Function looked at Dorian carrying one injured clerk away from two unreal copies.

At Pavel choosing the corridor where his upward rain left a physical wet trail.

At Mira cutting false branches from the red rope.

At Priya standing outside the room because the occupants of Kestrel had refused her authority.

Different people.

Different choices.

No complete system.

The claimant issued a final command.

PRESERVE ALL SAFE OUTCOMES UNTIL CUSTODY IS RESOLVED.

The Function lifted the strip.

Every corridor stopped.

If it copied the instruction, headquarters might continue branching until no physical structure remained outside the alternatives.

Dorian’s invisible edge turned toward the new role forming across the Function’s chest.

PRESERVER.

He grabbed his grey wrist with his left hand.

"No."

The edge sharpened.

Mira saw.

"Dorian, back."

"If it attaches—"

"You cannot aim."

"I know."

He stepped behind the red rope.

The choice cost him a possible solution.

The Function held the claimant strip above the wooden basket.

It shook.

Paragraphs tore from its arms.

One sentence formed.

THIS INSTRUCTION PRESERVES AUTHORITY.

A second followed.

IT DOES NOT PRESERVE THE PEOPLE INSIDE THE OUTCOMES.

The claimant chair objected.

FUNCTION EXCEEDS DESIGN SCOPE.

The Function placed the strip into the wastebasket.

Not copied.

Not obeyed.

Deferred.

Every false corridor began collapsing.

Mira shouted evacuation counts.

Dorian and his escorts carried the injured clerk across the final physical threshold.

Pavel followed the wet trail from his own rain.

Eleven held Ilan’s chosen name plate when the floor tried to label them D19.

Priya and Lio pulled Senka away from a disappearing stair.

Elias’s splint locked as three versions of his leg tried to occupy the same board.

Mira reached him.

"Foot flat."

"I know."

"Do it."

He forced the heel down.

The false legs vanished.

The headquarters returned around them.

Walls cracked.

Doors slammed.

The kitchen lost three versions and kept the one with a broken service latch.

Neutral containment remained intact.

The Preserving Function stood beside the wastebasket.

One claimant instruction lay inside.

The first thing it had refused to carry.

The hearing plate printed:

INDEPENDENT BOUNDARY EVIDENCE RECORDED.

PERSONHOOD: NOT ESTABLISHED.

PROPERTY TRANSFER: SUSPENDED.

ADVERSE PETITION: FAILED.

The empty claimant chair folded into the floor.

A final strip remained beneath it.

Serah lifted it with physical tongs.

The reverse displayed the procedural basis sustaining the residual claim.

CONTINUATION ESCROW TRUST.

PURPOSE:

PRESERVE ASH–31 AGAINST AUTHOR ABANDONMENT.

BENEFICIARY:

UNNAMED SUCCESSOR.

Achebe read the fields.

The claimant was not yet identified.

The claim survived through a trust created to act when the author abandoned the Story.

Who created the trust remained sealed.

Who the unnamed successor was remained sealed.

The Preserving Function looked through the glass at Elias.

A new sentence appeared across its chest.

I CHOSE NOT TO KEEP ONE THING.

Elias looked at the wastebasket.

"That was one choice."

The Function answered.

IT HURT.

No one declared it a person.

No one called the pain proven.

Medical entered to document the statement and the physical degradation along its arms.

The Sequel Clause remained dormant in Story Custody.

The residual claim remained active.

The headquarters stood.

Barely.

Inside the wastebasket, the rejected claimant instruction began burning from the edges.

Beneath it lay a second strip the Function had not placed there.

It carried one name.

The letters were covered before anyone could read them.
