Chapter 43: Why Don’t You Say You’re the Kid’s Godfather
"It’s me. They’re gone."
Caroline Whitman cautiously peeked out, her eyes just visible. "Really?" she asked tentatively.
Beside her, Ryan Grant poked his little head out too, his big, round eyes wide as he asked, "Really, Dad?"
Adrian Grant couldn’t help but be amused by the sight of the two of them on the bed—one big, one small. A strange feeling stirred in his heart.
’It’s as if, in this moment, they really are my wife and son.’
"Yes, they’re really gone."
Adrian Grant didn’t know how she’d managed to keep the boy from fussing to see his grandparents, but he knew he would have to explain the situation to her later.
After dropping their son off for his private lesson, they sat together in the car parked downstairs.
"Are you saying your parents know it was me in the room?" For a moment, Caroline Whitman didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Her brow furrowed. "You told them?"
Being found by his parents in the same room, on the same bed... any normal person would jump to conclusions.
’How am I supposed to face them after this?’
Adrian Grant said, "They figured it out on their own. I’ve been showing up with you in front of my grandfather, and I agreed to be set up on a date with you. It’s only natural they’d think of you first."
Caroline Whitman was at a loss for words, a little annoyed. "That may be true, but couldn’t you have denied it? This practically confirms that we’re in a relationship."
But Adrian Grant just tilted his head and asked, "We don’t have a relationship to begin with. What is there to confirm?"
"..."
"I explained to them that we were just discussing work last night. When it started thundering and raining, I had you stay over," Adrian Grant added, his voice still completely emotionless.
"..."
Caroline Whitman hesitated, then shot him a cool glance. "Do you even believe that yourself? If any other woman came to your house, would you let her stay in the master bedroom?"
’That excuse might work on a child, but there’s no way it would fool those two old foxes.’
"..."
"Never," Adrian Grant said suddenly.
"What?" Caroline Whitman was taken aback by his abrupt "never."
"No one has ever stayed over before you," Adrian Grant explained. "So, your hypothetical comparison isn’t valid."
Now Caroline Whitman was truly speechless.
She turned her head away as an inopportune thought surfaced. ’What is this? His way of telling me about his private life?’
She didn’t want the conversation to stay focused on her.
So she changed the subject. "What about our son? They didn’t find out about him, did they?"
"No, they didn’t. They just asked whose child I was holding that afternoon, and I told them he’s your godson."
"..."
"’Godson’? You even came up with that? Why didn’t you just say you were his godfather?"
"If necessary, I can be."
"..."
Caroline Whitman resisted the urge to roll her eyes at him. Remembering how confidently Adrian Grant had sworn no one would ever come over, she couldn’t help but tease wryly,
"I don’t think Ryan and I will dare visit your place again."
"...My grandfather’s driver took me home last night, so I had no choice but to go back to The Seraphic. I just didn’t expect you to bring our son with you."
He’d been too drunk to think straight last night. When he heard that the boy was already asleep at The Seraphic, he ended up staying by a strange twist of fate.
Without realizing it, they had both started putting their son first. As long as he could see them at night or the next morning, it didn’t matter where he slept.
Thinking about this, Caroline Whitman felt a sense of resignation.
"That kid is incredibly smart. Before I came out last night, he told me that if neither of us came home, he’d have Miss King take him to the old family house. I couldn’t risk it."
Adrian Grant: "..."
He was suddenly reminded of helping the boy with his homework recently. The three-and-a-half-year-old was indeed very sharp.
He was especially quick-witted, particularly when it came to adapting to new situations.
Having gotten on the same page, the two went their separate ways back to work.
After the close call with Jonathan Grant and Grace Lawson, things were quiet for a few days.
Caroline Whitman also hadn’t heard anything from her father, Franklin Whitman, so she was fairly certain the Grant family hadn’t said anything to her own parents.
「On the weekend.」
To avoid the awkwardness of being spotted and photographed by an acquaintance again, the two of them took Ryan Grant on a road trip to the neighboring city.
They took him to a public amusement park, finally granting his wish to play with other kids.
Still disguised in a hat and sunglasses, Caroline Whitman wore a light-colored dress as she sat with Adrian Grant in the parents’ waiting area.
The two of them sat primly, their gazes identically fixed on the little guy in the kids’ zone, who was having a blast playing with the other children.
"So, we came all this way... we’re not going to run into anyone taking pictures again, are we?"
Caroline Whitman elegantly adjusted her sunglasses, still a little worried.
Adrian Grant replied, "They’re all in Kingsport for the next few days. They don’t have any plans to leave the city."
Caroline Whitman glanced at Adrian Grant beside her.
He was wearing a simple, short-sleeved shirt and trousers. It was perfectly ordinary casual wear, yet it couldn’t hide his perfect physique—broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and long, straight legs.
Combined with his handsome, well-defined features, he was still incredibly eye-catching, even though he was wearing a hat and sunglasses just like she was.
This getup was far more conspicuous than his usual staid and formal appearance in a suit, instantly making him look like a college student.
As a result, people’s gazes had been fixed on him almost non-stop.
’Why did he suddenly change his style, anyway?’
Caroline Whitman had to admit, standing next to him while he looked like this was incredibly stressful.
She was terrified of a passerby snapping a photo of them.
The only thing she could do was try her best to hide her own face.
If a passerby did take a picture, at least she wouldn’t be recognized.
This was why, every time she went out with Adrian Grant and their son, she wore brand-new outfits that she had never worn in front of her parents, relatives, or friends.
’Top-tier counter-surveillance, right here.’
Caroline Whitman asked, "What if some of your friends or old classmates are here?"
Adrian Grant calmly adjusted his sunglasses. "They’re all in Kingsport."
After a pause, he retorted, "Forget about me. What about your friends and family?"
Caroline Whitman replied, "Don’t worry, I’m not as unreliable as you. I asked before we came. They’re all in Kingsport."
Adrian Grant: "..."
He had no rebuttal for that.
After all, Ryan Grant’s existence had been nearly exposed at his place on two separate occasions.
Bored, Caroline Whitman took out her phone to check the time.
Just then, a news notification popped up on her screen.
[BREAKING! Luna Lynn Is Retiring From Showbiz!]
Caroline Whitman raised an eyebrow and tapped on it.
She saw that Luna Lynn had posted a statement announcing her retirement.
"..."
Caroline was both surprised and not surprised.
She remembered that in the original story’s plot, Luna Lynn retired because she was drugged, spent a passionate night with Vincent Fuller, and got pregnant. That was why she quit showbiz and ran off with the baby.
But last time, it was Adrian Grant who had accidentally drunk that drugged wine.
’So, what’s with this sudden retirement?’
Caroline Whitman decided to ask her cousin, Lily Young. Lily had connections in the industry and was always well-informed; she would probably know more about the inside story.
After sending the message, Lily didn’t reply right away, so Caroline put her phone away and turned her attention back to her son, just in case he got into trouble while out of her sight.
After watching him for a while, her gaze drifted and happened to land on a large poster on the wall.
It was a promotional poster for an event with Luna Lynn at the mall.
Happening today.
The location was right here in Marinus, in the very mall where they were currently sitting.
Caroline Whitman silently took out her phone again, opened up social media, and looked through the trending topics. Only then did she realize that Luna Lynn had said she would officially retire after finishing today’s promotional event, and would no longer appear at related events or do any on-screen work.
"..."
Caroline Whitman pursed her lips and gave the man beside her a heads-up. "Luna Lynn announced she’s retiring today."
