Chapter 1: I need to kill more than a million slimes

Kanzaki Haru took a baseball bat out of his inventory, then struck a blue slime several times. After four uncounted hits, the slime died and dropped a crystal and some jelly. Haru crouched down and placed both items into his inventory.

’Now I just need to kill two million more slimes and I’ll be able to pay off my debt.’

He thought with great enthusiasm.

He had been doing this for many years. Since he was twelve years old, he had hunted slimes. Dungeons were open to everyone, regardless of class, and it wasn’t mandatory to have one to become an adventurer. All anyone had to do was sign a document exempting the dungeon from any responsibility, complete the training, and pay the entrance fee.

Each dungeon entry cost five copper coins. Each slime crystal sold for two copper coins, and the jelly sold for three copper coins. Haru always had to kill at least one slime to avoid taking a loss, although sometimes even killing a single slime was difficult and nearly impossible. At the beginning of every month, the dungeon was always packed with newcomers, and they always stayed on the first floor, causing every slime to be killed immediately. Even with the high spawn rate, the more adventurers there were in the dungeon, the fewer slimes remained to be hunted.

In six years, he had never entered the second floor. He had always preferred safety. The worst a slime could do was use acid and cause minor burns that could be healed with a basic potion costing ten copper coins. Besides that, the second floor was home to stronger monsters that were still considered beginner-level: white wolves and crystal serpents. Although they dropped items worth more money, he didn’t feel it was worth the effort and danger, so he simply continued killing slimes and earning a little money, enough to support himself and pay for rent, food, and, of course, the gambling he loved, even though he always lost money doing it.

That was why he owed a great deal of money to a family connected to one of the Four Great Families of the Empire.

Another slime appeared and was quickly killed, and its drops were collected.

A woman wearing armor that barely covered her private parts appeared. She walked right past him. The only thing he paid attention to was her butt, which was large and mostly exposed. Before long, his penis became erect, but he had a debt to pay, and his mind filled with unpleasant thoughts. As a result, his penis quickly looked like a turtle’s head retreating into its shell.

He continued killing more slimes, and after a few minutes, his watch sounded an alarm. He quickly left, handed the items to a receptionist with enormous breasts, and received the money. He didn’t check it, simply put it into his inventory and left.

He arrived at a school. An open area was filled with young people.

He didn’t pay attention to what an old man was saying. He simply got into a line.

"Hey, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen each other," a beautiful girl said with a wide smile on her face.

He thought for a few seconds, but he didn’t remember her.

"That’s true, it’s been a long time. How have you been?" he asked as she stood behind him in line.

"I’ve been great," she said as she grabbed his shoulder and kissed him on the cheek. "How about you?"

"I’m doing well too, just tired. I just came from a dungeon," he said, still trying to remember who the woman was.

They kept talking, and she kept flirting with him, but he couldn’t remember her, not even her body. How could he forget those breasts that swayed with nothing more than her breathing? Neither her voice nor the way she treated him felt familiar. Everything seemed new.

The first student was called. He received the common Butcher class, but he was happy since his family owned a butcher shop, and the class would certainly be very useful. The second received the common Ice Mage class, but it was only common rank, which wasn’t very useful in combat. Even so, he could still try making a living in a dungeon, but he would never be accepted into the army to travel to the Secret Kingdoms. They might not even allow him to enter the forest without stronger companions.

And so it continued. More than twenty students, and not one awakened a rare or legendary class. Only two classes were combat-oriented, which wasn’t unusual. Combat classes were rarer, and rare-rank classes were even harder to obtain.

Another thirty students went through the process. This time, only one received a rare class, and it was Swordsman. She could become one of the Empire’s knights and would certainly join the army, perhaps even the castle guard. Then another rare class appeared, but it was Farmer, a profession that was extremely necessary because of the food shortage caused by the war, yet at the same time it was a class people looked down on because it was associated with manual labor.

More than two hours had passed, and there were still many people in line. Haru was tired, but he had to keep waiting. Otherwise, he would end up without a class, and that would be much worse.

He looked to the side and saw his older brother. He possessed the legendary Paladin class, which brought great pride to the family. Haru, on the other hand, had always been considered the Kanzaki family’s greatest failure, which was why he had been kicked out of the house. Class Awakening Day was the only opportunity he had to return to the family home. But Haru wasn’t worried. He liked living alone because he didn’t have to worry about someone pressuring him every day or giving him obligations. That was why he liked having a place all to himself. At the same time, though, paying rent was a little difficult, so it might be worth moving back since he would save money and be able to pay off his debt more easily.

His name was called. The woman behind him wished him good luck, and he smiled in response. He climbed the two steps and stood before the old man whose name he couldn’t remember. Haru turned and looked at the large black stone before him. He stepped closer and placed his hand on it. He felt his hand grow warm, and within a few seconds, a brilliant yellow light appeared.

"A rare class," someone in line said loudly.

But the light changed color. It turned violet. That meant his class was legendary, but the light changed once again. That could only mean one thing.

"An Imperial-rank class!" the old man shouted.

[Class assignment process completed.]
