A Chronicle of Life in a Different World

Episode 80: Altar Part 1

At the foot of the Veos volcano, the building existed on a landscape-killing flat with cold, hardened lava and jets.

From a distance, it seems that the reddish rock is used as building material. The rocks used in the pillars and walls were rough, but there were traces of processing as building materials, apparently created by someone with some intent.

Dozens of cylindrical columns are constructed, and the walls are made of building materials with rock cut into cubes. Looking at the shades alone, it looks like you've built a wall with bricks piled up, but each rock is large, and each building material on the wall is one meter in size.

Except for the walls of Laval and Madalo, Reurus is the first large-scale structure to be seen in this world.

Reurus thought in his heart whether it was a building that made the crocesium horn-shaped and “boneless”, if it was an analogy from the obtuse memories of the previous life. The exterior of the building is decorative at all and is made of only rock pillars and walls.

Considerable time has passed since it was built, and some of the building materials were weathered and worn out. Still, there is no sign that the building will collapse because it is built to be sturdy.

Mataroi, Rapali, or a fortress built secretly by Berlido. Although Reurus thinks so, it is also a good place to recklessly build a building in the territory of the Fire Dragon.

"What is it...?"

In the end, all I could say to Reurus was words that made no sense.

A mysterious structure that is less than 100 meters on one side and nearly 20 meters high. I don't know if there is a roof, but it is too uncomfortable to have such a structure in such a place.

(If it's a game, it looks like a dungeon entrance or a boss character is waiting for it....)

In fact, there is a huge dungeon beneath the volcano Veos, and the far-sighted building may be the entrance to the dungeon. I've never heard of a dungeon in this world.

The Fire Dragon territory and the surrounding woods may be said to be a dungeon in some ways, but the treasure chest is unlikely to fall.

(No... my thoughts are going crazy)

Reurus, slightly confused by the sudden discovery of the artifact, shakes his head and regains his mind.

Reurus is certainly an adventurer, but he doesn't intend to make an adventure in such a dangerous zone. I don't feel magic, but it is also possible that I will meet the Fire Dragon as soon as I enter the building.

"I'm worried about your gaze, but you should leave here once... Mr. Gilba?

The reason I came here was because of Reus, who felt something in my eye, but I immediately decided to retreat after seeing a building that was too heterogeneous. Though Zilba looked at Reurus thinking he would, Zilba opened her eyes and revealed her astonishment.

"No way... that building..."

Gilba walks out like that whispering. Surprised by the action, Reurus hurriedly slapped Zilba on the shoulder.

"Mr. Gilba! What's the matter!?

"Eh...."

Hearing the voice of Reurus, Gilba looks back at me. Gilba's face still had a surprising color, and at the same time she seemed excited.

"Do you know what that building is?

Gilba, a relatively common sense man, would have exposed her feelings so far if the Gregorians hadn't been involved. Reurus asks what it is.

"... I don't have proof either."

That's how Zilba looks at distant buildings. Even though it is in the territory of the Fire Dragon, it smiles like vigilance has blown up.

"That building may be the 'altar'."

"'Altar'? Um... is that it?"

Apparently, it's an important place for Gilba to lose calm, but unfortunately, Reurus doesn't know what an 'altar' is. As soon as I looked at Eliza, she shook her neck sideways.

"In certain environments... for example, places like Mount Veos are prone to the gathering of monsters dealing with flame magic. Have you ever heard such stories?

"Huh? Uh... I thought you heard that from Dario."

When I asked about the intermediate monsters that inhabit the vicinity of Madaro Waste City, I heard Reurus wonder because there are many monsters dealing with flame magic.

It was said that monsters dealing with flame magic in hot places and those dealing with ice magic in cold places were easy to gather, but what happened to them?

"Certain monsters gather in certain environments... it doesn't change even for spirits. The fact that it was built near a volcano means that the building was probably meant to celebrate the Spirit of Fire... I didn't know you could see it in a place like this!

The excitement grew while we were talking, and Gilba is about to storm the Altar. Reurus grabs Jilba's shoulder and desperately tries to hold it.

"Oh, calm down, Mr. Gilba! This is the territory of the Fire Dragon, right? It's dangerous!

"What is a Fire Dragon!? You've found the" Altar "and if you don't offer your prayers, the Spirit's name will be destroyed!

"No, but because it's dangerous... it's chaotic!?

A Reurus that desperately tried to stop Gilba, but the difference in power was obvious. Although Eliza was lowered to the ground and Zilba was strangled with wings, she was dragged away no matter how hard she stepped on it.

"Yikes... help Eliza too!

"Don't talk nonsense!? Even if I try to stop it, I'll be repelled!?

We can't just use "calorie release" to stop Jilba as much as we want, but we're being dragged away.

"I only read about it in the literature, but the 'altar' that the spirituals used to build to celebrate the Great Spirit and the Spirit... no, I'm heartbreaking!

"Don't make me dance! Damn it! I don't really listen to you at these times!

Where did the tension of stepping into the Fire Dragon's territory disappear? Zilba went straight ahead with a heavy footsteps.

"Do you know, Mr. Reurus!? It's been hundreds of years since Volcano Veos was inhabited by dragons! It would be impossible to build an Altar in such a place! In other words, that" altar "may have existed for more than a thousand years, not hundreds of years!?

"It's my first time and I don't care now! Ah... I can't..."

In contrast to Jilba, who heats up, Reurus relinquishes all his feathers with his abandoned face. Now that the Spirit is tangled, I realized that no matter how hard Reurus works, Gilba won't stop.

"Probably because of the fire dragons that settled in the Veos volcano, the Spirits who approached the 'Altar' were interrupted! I didn't expect to find the 'Altar' in the process of exterminating monsters... thank you, Great Spirit!

Zilba won't stop at the earliest. Reurus, who decided so, hugged Eliza and desperately chased Zilba as she ran away.

The building that Gilba said was an 'altar' had a truly majestic atmosphere when approached. Although some building materials have weathered over the years, it also appears to be a “taste” in conjunction with the word "altar".

"Ooh... ooh..."

Zilba, who approached the "altar", seemed so moved and trembling that she could even shed tears. With his body trembling little by little, Reurus and Eliza slightly distanced themselves from Zilba.

"Yep, Reurus... what are you going to do?

"I don't know what to do...."

I should have investigated the cause of the appearance of intermediate monsters around the abandoned city of Madalo, but I don't think that the discovery of the "Altar" caused me to stray into a sidewalk. Whatever you say to Gilba nowadays doesn't make sense, and Reurus is halfway there.

It is true that buildings built hundreds of years ago - if not more than a thousand years ago - are of historical value. As long as it concerns spiritualism, I can understand Gilba's emotions a little bit.

(Thousands of years ago, hey... humans and monsters killed each other, but they were inferior, and the Great Spirit called Komona saved humans?

I remember hearing such a story from the Esther of the Spirit Teacher, but if the story is true, the "altar" in front of me may have been built when Spiritualism emerged.

It was probably made by human hands, but no matter how magical it was, the enthusiasm for creating huge structures without heavy machinery was incredible.

As for Reurus, I was more concerned about entering the Fire Dragon territory than about the Altar.

(Speaking of which....)

Then, I noticed that the gaze I had just felt had disappeared. Reurus looks around, but he can't feel his unknown gaze.

"Hmm... I don't know what to do."

As he murmured, Reurus looked up at the sky.

Much time had passed since the departure of the abandoned city of Madalo, and the sun had already crossed Jomtien. I have time until the sun goes down due to summer, but I wonder if I can go back to Madaro Waste City by sunset even if I turn around now.

"Gilba-san, it's time to go crazy... Gilba-san?

After checking the position of the sun and lowering my gaze, Zilba disappeared. It was an unexpected revulsion, but Eliza pointed her finger in a troubled face.

"Over there... I ran away without time to stop."

"Gilba-san....."

Until now, I thought it would be okay not to involve even the Gregorians, but it seems that unexpected mines have been planted. In the direction Eliza pointed, there was Gilba standing at the entrance to the Altar.

Why don't we just leave Gilba and go back to the abandoned city of Madalo? Unexpectedly, such an idea was just behind Reurus's head, but it was just unjust.

He shook his head and threw out the noisy thoughts, and followed Zilba with Eliza. There are no signs of monsters in the territory, not the Fire Dragon's “feeding grounds”, but the danger of buildings collapsing is not zero.

"I've been walking in the direction of Rapali... but if I make the road, I'll be a sanctuary... to eradicate the monsters around me... and kill the Gregorians who stopped by..."

"Yahee, you're mumbling about some messy stuff."

"Is it okay to go back to the abandoned city of Madalo?

I caught up with Gilba, but I was confused to speak up. Eliza was throwing a spoon, and she seemed to recommend her withdrawal from the area.

"Ah... excuse me. I was unworthy and excited."

Grun, Zilba just looks back at her neck. The face was filled with a smile, and Reurus filled herself with a desire to escape with Eliza.

"Um... congratulations?

"Yes, thank you. This is a historic discovery for us Spirits... No, I'm glad we invited Mr. Reurus as a Guest. Thank you for your guidance, Great Spirit."

(I wonder if I can still return this "Guest ID"....)

It was hard to sympathize with Gilba because he was a former Japanese and had no religion in this world. Still, Zilba's joy was so great, I blessed her with a attractive smile.

"Look, the entrance to the Altar is safe."

"It seems so...."

Gilba showed us the entrance to the Altar. There was no door, and a longitudinally elongated arch-shaped entrance was made up of cubic rock.

Well, shall we come in?

Gilba smiles and tries to dive through the entrance. There was nothing to stop it, and Reurus and Eliza followed it silently.

"Oh... this is great!

Zilba exclaims as she enters the Altar.

The first place I saw through the entrance was an enormous place of prayer worthy of the name 'Altar'. Beautifully polished stones are stretched on the floor, lined with stone benches.

Inside the Altar were cylindrical pillars all over the place, supporting the ceiling as though it had been cut out of rock. There are places where the ceiling has collapsed over the years, but the light from the holes has plunged into the outside, creating majestic signs.

And most importantly, the stone statue placed in the middle of the Altar. Apart from the likeness of the Great Spirit, there is a huge stone statue that probably mimics the Spirit of Fire.

Seeing the statue, Zilba immediately threw herself on her knees and began praying.

(Looks like a devout believer to me... well, just to make sure the surroundings are safe for now)

Jilba won't be able to move at all. Having decided so, Reurus begins exploring the Altar.

As large as it looks, the "Altar" is reasonably large. There were rooms partitioned by stone walls that were used not only as places of worship, but also as dwellings for worshippers or spirituals.

There is no furniture in the room. It wasn't weathered and broken, and everything seems to be gone. I wonder if the presence of a firedragon in the volcano of Veos forced me to move.

"... hmm?

There was no sign of a monster, but he looked around with his big sword on his shoulder so that he could deal with it anytime - Reurus stunned his nose.

The unpleasant smell of something rotting. The smell was one that stimulated the memory of Reurus' predecessors, but Reurus turned to Eliza who was walking next door for a moment.

(Sukashi... no, hey. It's not like there's no delicacy.)

If we had been same-sex, we would have listened without hesitation. Swallow it and point your feet in the direction where the smell gets stronger.

"What is this smell..."

Did Eliza notice the smell, too? She frowned and frowned. Still, you can't leave it unacknowledged, but you approach it carefully.

(This smell... oh, yeah... volcanoes.)

Reurus is convinced by the smell that grows stronger as we approach. Still, I thought there might be monsters I didn't know about, so I didn't lose my mind.

I don't think so, but perhaps there are monsters wandering around like rotten zombies.

Still, there was “it” in the back of the "altar" dwelling area, further down through the corridor made of stone.

"... what? Stinky water?"

Originally there was a wooden door, or a stone room with weathered wooden debris. It was made wider than the rest of the room, and Eliza looked inside and murmured with a strange face.

It was a hot spring with a unique smell and hot air rising from the surface.
