A Chronicle of Life in a Different World
Episode 104: The Search for Dwarves Part 1
It was on the evening of the sixth day that the Reurus, who had travelled through Tillier, arrived at their next destination, Accra. By the time the sun began to set on the mountain, it had finally arrived at a time when the sky had begun to turn blue.
Accra, like Tyrier, was a fortress city with high walls and large moats. I would have stayed inside until nightfall, and if I had arrived an hour late, I would have been able to spend the night out in the wilderness.
"That was close....."
Reurus murmured as he paid the gate soldiers a toll and stepped into the walls of Accra.
I still have plenty of room, but it's time I took a good rest. While turning to the Spiritual Church, Reus took care not to let Eliza and Sarah get away.
"Hmm... I'm tired..."
"Strengthen your body even more. How am I still doing? You're pinching, right?
"I don't know what this irrational thing is..."
Eliza hasn't been "fortified" yet, but she's not as tired as she gets used to traveling or falling down.
Unlike Eliza, Sarah was looking around like she was feeling better. Even though the appearance is similar, it seems that the “contents” are different, and the physical strength is also very different.
I didn't know if the Spirit of Fire had the concept of physical strength in the first place, but Sarah's presence that doesn't show tiredness even if she carries the luggage is also appreciated as a revus.
Like Tyrier, Reurus walks towards the church without worrying, although his gaze is uncomfortable.
"... mountain... collapse..."
"Again... again... what..."
As you walk through the sunset townscape, you can hear the conversation between the townspeople and the loving men. Looking at the voice, there were men who wore work clothes that emphasized ease of movement.
(... a carpenter or something?
The men are in fairly good shape and are carrying a soft leather bag on their shoulders thinking that they are going home from work or that they have work tools in them.
"Reurus? What's wrong?
"Hey, what's going on? Let's get going. If it stays this way, Eliza will fall."
Don't be ridiculous! I'm still fine!
It must be some kind of rumor. Reurus switches consciousness and walks along with Eliza and Sarah as she pulls her hands and hem.
"... but... fu..."
"Really... soldiers..."
But every time I went down the road, I heard voices coming from all over the place. Apparently there is a topic that is attracting attention, and words are exchanged there.
As he leaned his neck and wondered what had happened, the Spiritual Church, the purpose of which was to stop at Accra, went into sight.
Reus went straight to the church and showed the Spirits who had come out with the "Proof of the Guest" and a letter from Gilba.
"I'd like to rent an overnight accommodation if possible...."
Yeah, I don't mind.
The same was true of the Church of Tillier, but the Spirits of Accra were also older men. He is an old man whose gray hair stands out and whether it will reach sixty years of age or not.
Even though Japan may still look young at the age of sixty, the old man in this world is really an “old man.” Whether the difference in average life expectancy affects people, when it comes to 60 years old, they are really treated as elderly.
Unlike the churches in the abandoned city of Madalo, the churches run by such old spirituals boast a look commensurate with the size of the town of Accra. The walls were made of brick, and the building itself was made large.
Compared to the church in the abandoned city of Laval, it will be about two to three times larger. The interior of the church is also widely built so that dozens of believers can worship, and the living space created behind the church is also large.
There were about two rooms, but there were rooms, and Reurus and the others rented one.
"Speaking of which, I think there was a lot of noise in town... what happened?
While thanking the spirituals who guided me, Reus asks that the object is still there. Then the old spiritual man distorted his wrinkled face a little.
"There's a place near this town called the Valley Mine, you know?
"I hear there's a mine...."
I don't want to be in the mood for a revus with a past sold as mine slaves. Still, I didn't know what would help and decided to gather information.
"Recently, there has been a continuing collapse in the Valley mine. Rumor has it that the dwarf's work and other monsters are rampant...."
"... hmm? Dwarf, is that you?
The word dwarf came out of nowhere, and Reurus left it for a few seconds before reacting. I got information from Singh and Snow, but I didn't think there was anything else in Accra.
"There have been rare sightings of dwarfs around the Valley mine. The lord was left alone because he would never attack if we didn't do it...."
Apparently, Natalia's story that there was a dwarf was true. However, it has a nasty smell even though it is rumored.
"You really think the dwarf is in trouble?
"Some people in town think so... that's what I mean."
Rumor has it he's swimming around with a tail. Or have you ever actually seen a dwarf rampaging?
It would be helpful if we could get information on the dwarf more easily than we thought, but it would be troublesome if the lord's army were to move in the way of the dwarf.
Whatever the truth, the dwarf is a subhuman - a monster.
Though missed because they hadn't attacked before, if they think they've collapsed the mine, they'll crush it relentlessly.
(This is a bad idea....)
There is also the question of whether a dwarf will actually be found, but I think I might get caught up in "other problems” before I do.
Once you arrive in Accra, you can't pretend it's a journey to deliver a sacrifice to a spiritual church. You can lie, but what happens if they find out it's a lie?
Though I don't think I'll be held captive without asking questions because of Zilba's letter, I feel sorry for the way the adventurers have been treated so far.
(... for now, let's get a good night's rest and get out of town as soon as the night starts)
While thanking the spiritual old man, Reurus made that decision.
The day after dawn.
The weather was bad since that morning. It's not raining, but it looks like it's going to rain. Thick clouds cover the sky and a damp wind blows in.
"Depending on the weather, we may return to Accra...."
Looking up at the gray sky, Reurus groaned hatefully. I don't know when it will rain, and I can't just sit still.
Behind such an impatience, Reurus decided to head for the Valley mine for now.
It's called the Valley Mine, and it seems to be excavating metals and the like with the help of humans.
Naturally, excavation requires a man, and the Valley Mine brings together merchants and prostitutes who have husbands as opponents, soldiers to protect the mine, etc., which is about the size of a village, but forms a living space for people.
Of course, even if the Reurus storm such a place, they will be driven away. It seemed that there was no church, and the use of "Guest ID" and Jilba's letters was unlikely to have any significant effect.
"Looks like it's going to rain... can you blow the rain clouds off like this?
"It's impossible to twist down natural phenomena with a power technique... but Vanille might be able to do it."
It seems to vaporize the rain clouds with powerful flame magic. With that in mind, you will continue along the road that leads to the Valley Mine - the forest beside it.
It's far from being seen from the streets, but still close enough for the Reurus to not lose sight of the streets. He searches the surroundings without interruption, scraps the grass and trees, and walks in the dark forest because of the cloudy sky.
If we could get close to the Valley mine, we'd have to change course and search the surroundings. We don't think Dwarves are in the Valley mine, so we're searching around for places where people might be confused to step in.
The dwarf is an intermediate monster. In that case, it is not strange to make the territory even deeper or in the mountains than the shallow areas of the forest.
(Although it is rare, it has been witnessed several times, so it is not far off the street... No, maybe it is a dwarf who is traveling like us. In that case, I wouldn't be able to find it even if I looked around...)
The worst thing for the Reurus is that there is no dwarf around the Valley mine, and the pattern of frequent sightings is the dwarf of the journey.
If that's the case, you'll have to walk around hoping to run into a traveling dwarf by chance.
In this vast world, you even walk around looking for someone you'll never know. It would be better to have a human blacksmith make a great sword with the money than to bet on the possibility of encountering it.
(But that's why there's a material problem... hmm?
Reurus walked in the woods, but stopped his feet feeling strange. Just to alert Eliza and Sarah, she just looks strange.
"Huh? What? Did you find anything?
"... I mean, you haven't found anything?
Reurus sighs at Sarah who asks her with a smile what she loves. Sarah waved her hands in a hurry to see if she was neglecting to search again.
"Yikes, you're on alert!? You've got a lot of human fever in the distance, and you've got it!
"Say that first... direction, distance, how many?
"What? Hmm... that's a long way away, isn't it? More than a dozen?
Sarah pointed in the direction of the street. Reurus concluded that there are no magicians or even less magic because magic does not catch his speculation at present.
"A soldier walking down the street? Let's just avoid it."
We can't make contact with soldiers. That is the common perception among the Reurus, and everyone turns to the back of the forest.
"Hmm... so? What did Reurus care about?
Reurus leaned his neck to Eliza's words, which helped him avoid the junior monsters, the reason he didn't hesitate to move into the woods.
"No, I thought I felt some magic... but I couldn't pick it up well."
Months have passed since Reurus became aware of magic, and the distance at which Reurus can feel magic is gradually increasing.
However, the distance remains the same due to the weakness of magic, and in the case of fine magic, we need to get close to it.
Even horned rabbits would now notice if they were within 30 meters, but the magic that Reurus felt today was a strange way to convey it, which he had never felt before.
It was as if the magic was attenuated by a wall or something, and I didn't know the exact direction. Sarah didn't feel the magic from the direction she pointed her finger at, so she didn't seem to have reacted to the soldier and her thoughtful opponent.
"Hmm... there's no other heat source. Like a little bird or a little animal?
"I don't know... maybe there's someone who can hide his magic, and I won't let you down."
I just recently encountered a powerful user who can hide his magic. Without knowing where to go and what kind of opponent, Reurus walked carefully through the Great Sword at all times - and felt the magic again.
(... where is it?
The way magic feels is very vague. It feels like there is what Sarah calls a “heat source” at a distance, centered on her own.
Speaking of the feeling of a realuse that lived in Heisei Japan, it's like you can feel the heat of a stove in a distant position. The heat - the distance and precise direction that you can feel with the strength of magic change, but this time the magic is conveyed in a strange way.
With his hands on the handle of the Great Sword, Reurus looks around. Eliza and Sarah are also alert to the surroundings as Reurus moves, but “something” doesn't show up.
All you see around you are lush and lush trees. Perhaps they are misguided by the trees, but that should catch Sarah's detection net.
It's completely different from when I felt Vanille's gaze from afar on the volcano Veos. There was no feeling of being seen, and a very faint magic was caught in the reflection of Reurus.
"It's gone... what is it?
When I was alert, the magic that I felt slightly disappeared. It feels like a fox or a fox, but Reurus walks out with his right hand on the handle of the great sword.
Walking that way for a while, Reurus looked up at the sky, feeling the rain particles hitting his face.
It seems that it has finally started raining, and rainfall grains are beginning to pour into the woods where the trees are growing.
"Oh no... we'll find a place to stay in the rain! Pick up as much firewood as you can!
Since it is late summer now, there are no leaves scattered. A tree with a large number of leaves should be able to shelter in the rain.
Reus, who decided so, gave instructions to Eliza and Sarah and ran away - the soil of the "ground” broke off and danced.
