A Chronicle of Life in a Different World

Episode 256: Signs Part 2

Reurus took the streets of the abandoned city of Laval and stepped into the Adventurers' Union.

The time is before noon, so there are no other adventurers. The Adventurers Association is crowded in the morning when the request is received and in the evening when the request is reported, so no one stops at the Adventurers Association during the day unless it is urgent.

Reurus and Collard go to the reception as it is convenient to be unavailable. Both have serious expressions, but Neddy walks silently, little by little, behind him, whether he knows or not they're in the mood.

"Oh... what's wrong with you at this hour?

Natalia, who had welcomed the Reuses, was looking through the documents on the desk at the reception. And when he looked equally at Reurus and Collard with a serious expression, he opened his mouth while placing the document on the desk.

"What did the five men who came to the gate do?

"Eh... why did you do that?

Hearing Natalia's words, Reurus opened his eyes to surprise.

I went straight through the gate to the Adventurers Association, but did someone else report it in the meantime? Despite that doubt, to the best of Reurus' knowledge, no one overtook them and went to the Adventurers' Union.

"Something difficult happened with the word, Captain... no, Lord Natalia."

While Reurus remembers the question, Collard takes Natalia's words for granted and answers them. Natalia laughed like a prank at Collard's reaction.

"Oh, can't you call me Captain anymore?

"If it's a personal matter, do it many times. However, I'm not irrelevant this time either. We need to move as Collard-Nate, not Collard, who was your attendant."

"Hmm...."

Did Collard's behavior make things important? Natalia turns her expression once again into something serious.

"Well, let's leave the joke at that... and the letter from Reurus, the Viscount of Werg?

"... well understood, Seung-san."

With that in mind, Reus sends a letter from Diego to Natalia. Natalia smiled a little at Reurus's words, but opened the letter without answering anything and began to see what was inside.

As Natalia read the letter, there was a feeling that the air of the Adventurers' Union was gradually getting heavier. Is that an illusion that only Reurus had, or does Collard also feel it?

"I see... you're going to have some trouble with it."

It was such a murmur that came out of Natalia's mouth after reading the letter for about three minutes. The voice tone also contained an impressive sound, but the expression was somewhat sharp.

"Where's the messenger?

"They're staying in Laval. He said he wanted an answer within three days...."

"... yes"

Natalia nodded at Reurus's words and took the pipe out of nowhere. The collard who saw it shook his body for some reason, but Reurus couldn't afford to care more than Natalia in front of him.

"Trouble?

"Well... it can be a nuisance, and it can be an opportunity."

"... if this isn't a good idea, I'm leaving with Neddy.

Given Collard's reaction to the letter he received from Diego, Reurus is also involved. But I'm curious, but I don't know if it's okay to go deeper considering Natalia's position.

"Don't hesitate. I'd rather listen to you... no, I'd rather hear your opinion."

Natalia smiled as she said so. Reurus shook her shoulders, raised the Dragon Slash nearby, and then lowered her hips to the chair.

"Where's Neddy?

"You can stay, but you don't have to."

"Really... Neddy, I'm running out of salt at home, so can you get me some?

When Reurus invites Neddy, he takes a silver coin out of his wallet and gives it to him. Then Neddy stared at Reurus in the chair.

"... you don't have to protect me?

"Hmm? Oh, it's okay now. You can spend the extra money on pocket money, so please buy it out."

"... wow"

He slightly broke his face at Neddy's words, caressing his head before sending it out. Neddy raised his hands in response to the word pocket money, but his face was real. Probably even imitating Sarah.

As he smiled at Neddy's back as he ran away, Reurus turned back to Natalia. The expression had already turned serious, and Natalia smiled satisfactorily when she saw it.

"Did she miss you so much?

"If that's the case... you're a good boy. Can I ask you something?

Reurus leans back on his chair and talks to Natalia. Natalia turned her eyes to Collard and asked him to sit on the chair, again dropping her eyes on the letter.

"First of all, Lord Collard..."

"Hah...."

Natalia calls out Collard's name in honor, and Collard corrects his posture in awe. Reurus did not say anything to those two exchanges and decided to keep an eye on the situation.

"It says here that I can get your help in this case... is that correct?

"I assure you. Personally... no, I'd say it's reckless if I don't decorate myself, but I have a formal request for your help from the Värg family."

Natalia and Collard talk in awe not only of their attitudes, but also of their language. I think Reurus is fresh when he hears about those two interactions.

(You and Collard are totally different... this is the “official” interaction between the Baron and the Knight?

Now that you know Natalia's position, it is not surprising, but it is strange to see Collard, the knight of the country, interacting with the opponent face to face.

"Really...."

After listening to Collard's words, Natalia thought slightly and turned her eyes towards Reurus.

"Someone with the power to accomplish this request with our power… We cannot accept this story unless Reurus accepts the request. This is absolute."

"That's... no, I guess not."

Collard also looks at the rear view, but as a rear view from the two of them, he can only tilt his neck.

"Ah... I knew from Mr. Collard's reaction, but is this about me?

Reurus shakes the conversation with courtesy to suit the air of the venue. Natalia took the Reurus question for granted and raised her eyebrows small.

"Reurus, you have a lot of knowledge, don't you?

"I just have a bad feeling about pretending... but don't complain if you don't know anything.

As Natalia's tone shattered, so did Reurus. However, even if the tone is broken, the content can't be ignored as a revulsion.

"That's fine. There is a monster called the Unicorn, do you know anything about it?

"Unicorn?

Reurus listens to Natalia's words and explores the memories of previous generations. I try desperately to catch my worn memories, but I don't get a lot of information.

"Unicorn... unicorn. Sounds familiar to me...."

It is a word I remember hearing in my previous life - but it was impossible to recall the details. Compared to slime and so on, its visibility is much lower.

"I got a big horn... um... horse?

I tried desperately to remember, but it was the only answer I could get. But as for Natalia, she nodded with a faint smile.

"I only know it by hearsay, but it seems that way. It's the unicorn that will be involved in this request."

"You want me to take him down?

If that's the request, I'll take care of it, but Reurus nods with a rush. But Natalia smiles bitterly.

"Don't knock it down. This is absolute. If we take him down, we won't be able to achieve our purpose."

"... that reply really gives me a bad feeling."

I thought it was a request to exterminate monsters that I had received before, but apparently not. Reurus had a bad feeling that he didn't want to hear more, but he couldn't help but listen.

"For the first time, Unicorn is not such a dangerous monster. The ranks of monsters ranged from intermediate to advanced and lower, but they weren't so powerful... Kimira would be superior in simplicity. However, unicorns have their own characteristics."

"Features?"

The strength of being counted as a monster ranges from intermediate to upper and lower levels. Reurus wonders, but Natalia keeps talking.

"Yes... the unicorn is characterized by its powerful healing magic. Apart from their ability to fight and their magnitude of magic, they say their abilities are comparable to those of the White Dragon."

"White Dragon is a superior monster... right?

Natalia nods with a serious look when asked by Reurus, who feels she has heard such a story before.

"I see. It is said to be closer to the apex of the monster than the Class Dragon."

"I don't know what to do with a monster that is partly comparable to such a mess...."

They say you can't take it down, but then I don't know what to do. Reurus had a puzzled look on his face, but he could think behind it.

(Unicorn... a monster that can use powerful healing magic. What are you doing with a monster like that... No, wait... it was the Viscount Velg who offered you this request.)

Characteristics of the monster that is likely to be involved with the person who brought in the request this time. Reurus, who tied the two together, felt something caught in his brain.

(If someone is injured, can you heal them with a magic cure or use a magic medicine... I think the Viscount of Velg can do either. When that happens, are you trying to cure something that you can't cure by “normal means"?

There was only one girl behind Reurus thinking. It seems necessary to pull out the presence of monsters such as Unicorn, even among the Viscount Velg's family who brought in this request.

"I need to ask you one thing... where is that unicorn?

The mouth of Reurus was moving without knowing. A nobleman named Värg, who will have more talent and combat power than the abandoned city of Laval, has come all the way to ask for it. There should be inevitability there.

Natalia must have noticed that Reurus was "watching” Reurus asking with a serious look. He smiles without saying that he did well, but he immediately reappears with a serious expression.

"Where do you think you are?

"... a place where the“ aristocrats ”of the Vicomte de Velg cannot reach or are difficult to reach... a country other than Mataroi."

The Värg family, which runs the border between the two countries, is also well known in Mataroi. Reurus has only seen the strength of the battle against the residence of the Viscount of Velg, but the main unit must have been elsewhere, such as at the border.

There shouldn't be many reasons why such a Värg family would bother targeting the abandoned city of Laval - an “unregulated power” of adventurers.

"That's right. I want Miss Ruvillia, the second daughter of the Viscount of Velg, to be brought to the unicorn for medical treatment... and that's what I've been asked to do. The place is....."

While saying that, Natalia takes the map and the paper out of the drawer. It is very rough and roughly a substitute for the name of the entire continent of Caldeba.

"Rumor has it that Unicorn lives in a huge forest on the east side of La Paris, a neighboring country east of Laval Waste City. If there is a problem, it means that the forest is located on the border with the state of Berlid in the north-east of the continent."

And Reurus, who heard Natalia's explanation, pulled her cheeks.

Cross the lands of other countries and reach the vast forest on the border between the two countries to find a monster named Unicorn and treat Ruvillia.

"... are you crazy?

Reurus, who heard the story, spoke the same words as Collard.
