A Chronicle of Life in a Different World
Episode 265: Journey Part 2
The sound of firewood exploding. The fire produced a glorious light in the darkness, surrounding it, and Reurus and the others rested.
The day we left the abandoned city of Laval. The sun is already setting and the surrounding area is set in darkness. Looking up at the sky, the missing moon floated, but the amount of light was not great.
"I'm really not sure whether it should be as expected or unexpected."
It was Collard who twisted his neck.
Collard has extensive knowledge as a knight belonging to Mataroi. In addition, he had experience commensurate with his knowledge because he continued to promote from soldier to soldier and from soldier to knight.
Reurus also tilted his neck because he murmured in such trouble.
"Is there a problem?
"No... I traveled slower than I expected, but I was able to reach this place..."
That's how Reurus looks around. Reurus and the others chose the place for the night camp, called the "station", which was set up along the street.
It is a recreational facility with a lattice-shaped fence made of wood that stretches squarely and is about the height of the waist, but with an empty moat. Reurus is occasionally used when traveling, but it can also be used as an instant defense position inside the Station, making it difficult for bandits and monsters to get close.
We had to move a part of the fence to get in with a double-headed carriage, but it would be a great place to do night shifts.
"... Ruvillia-sama was walking hard?
Anemone asked Collard about his slow movement, killing his face. Perhaps he didn't like Collard's remarks, but he was more attentive than he was to Reurus, who was killing his expression.
"That's admittedly true with me, but the fact that the march speed is different from expected is very troublesome for those who lead the troops. It doesn't matter if it's fast, but if it's slow, we may run out of food and water."
"That's... no, you're right."
"Hmm. But this is a journey, not a march... I thought of myself as a knight, but that's what I said. I have no intention of insulting Ruvillia, so forgive me."
Anemone's expression soothes after listening to Collard. Reurus laughed bitterly at the two conversations.
(Mr. Collard, you're good at wrapping things up. Is it necessary as a knight, or is it his personality...)
While acknowledging that Ruvillia's feet are slow, he knows that it is necessary to recognize them. I can only admire it as a revulsion, but now there is something else that I am worried about.
"Ruvillia traveled a little slower than expected, but was it still unexpected that she could get here?"
"That's right. My predictions were that there would be at least one raid of monsters and bandits on the way. Without it, I was able to move forward as expected."
"You're going down the street. The monster is still a servant, but I have to assume that there is a problem with the lord's rule because bandits appear frequently....."
Anemone looked suspicious, but the question was as expected. Collard nodded one before explaining.
"Has the maid ever traveled before? Ah, I mean without the Knights of the House of Werg."
"... that's not what I meant. When I get out of Accra, it's about time I move as a cure for Ruvillia."
"That's the answer. Whatever monsters do, they choose who to attack. It is nothing but foolishness to attack the knights of the mighty and well-known Viscount Velg. He'll run when he finds out."
Collard says as he throws out the branches of the tree to adjust the fire.
"No matter how good governance you lay down, whoever dresses up as a bandit... from such a bandit, we would have looked like a dressed prey. It is strange that there was no raid."
"I got caught in Sarah's scouting range several times, and it sounded like a scourge to me. I turned around and ran away."
Strange, Reurus hits the gavel.
Sarah complained of the anomaly about three times during her daytime journey, but it wasn't all a fight. Normally, they used to lurk in the woods by the street and wait, attacking people who passed by, but Reurus and the bandits never attacked them.
It's not a quick journey, but it's better to stop less. Though it is thankful that there was no battle when I thought about it, it didn't fall into my heart as a revulsion.
But when he heard Reurus say that, Collard turned white.
"I don't care how many bandits didn't attack, but I wonder if they would attack the monster."
"I was in the direction of travel, and I followed....."
That said, Reurus turned to the back. Behind her gaze is Sarah, who bakes horned rabbits, and Meer, who seasons them with one hand, and Ruvillia, who looks at them in a rare way.
Eliza and Neddy were guarding Ruville, but this ensured that Anemone was safe from Ruville.
"Ahahaha! Yakiniku tonight! I'm gonna bake it good!
"Not only salt, but also spices can widen the flavor range."
I hear a conversation between Sarah, who bakes meat with high tension, and Meer, who shakes the seasonings flat as if she's used to it.
"... well, Eppel's meat is spermish and saves food, so it's good."
Collard was staring at Sarah as she baked the meat, but he eventually gave up something and lost sight of her. Her cheeks pulled slightly and her right hand was gently attached to her stomach, so she didn't even see Reurus.
"Ohhh... Anyway, there's nothing to it right now. However, it can be a coincidence only today, so don't be too distracted. Of course, it's also a problem to be too tight."
In the words of Collard, Anemone slipped away. You must have remembered Collard's attention during the journey.
"... I seem to make an excuse, but I was more afraid of the monster than the bandits. Reurus... as you may know, even though he was manipulated by the Gregorians, he encountered two Kimiras before."
"It's not like being called honorably, so you can just throw it away.
Reurus casually tells the slightly more spoken anemone. It is itchy to be applied like Ruvillia, but I am not particularly worried about it even if it is called without a title. Considering Ruvillia's situation, I am convinced by Anemone's attitude.
I don't think so, as a maid, but Ruvillia's offering is to Anemone alone. Though they are knights, from the House of the Viscount of Velg, they go to Collard, the "Outsider", and Reurus, the adventurers who are close to the lowest ranks in the world.
(From Anemone's point of view, it might be like you were told to come and die... or do you know the conditions under which Ruvillia would not be held responsible for his death? Jilba-san told me never to let you die, but I wonder if this is the attitude you know around here....)
I'm curious, but I won't be able to ask directly. This situation, which seemed to show signs of improvement as Collard stood in between, was likely to collapse at once.
"... no, I'm Ruvillia's maid. Besides, this time, I brought in the request. It's only natural to thank those who help us."
"It doesn't look like a natural face, but...."
"Ah... that's right! For one day only, how monotonous is the journey? Even though Ruvillia's health and the bandits avoided us, it was just walking down the street."
When Collard entered the comic book, Anemone blushed slightly to distract him from the story. Avoiding such a forceful deviation, Reurus silences without saying anything.
"Ah... explaining that there is no misunderstanding makes this trip very easy."
While saying so, Collard turned to Sarah and Neddy.
"It doesn't take much time to build a fire, and there's no need to look for a water source because the water is running out. I have food for you, but if you find a monster, some people try to hunt it right away... hmm, it's still easy."
If you need fire, you can use Sarah's flame magic, and if you need water, you can use Neddy's water magic to secure it. If it bothers Neddy, he can produce ice. If you need anything on your trip, Meer can make it, and Eliza's presence won't bring in any low-level monsters.
Collard is right, it's easy in many ways.
"I didn't see you today, but no matter which knights or soldiers are patrolling the streets, what happens if I reveal my identity? However, it will be easier in Mataroi... no, it will be close to the border."
"Ah... I won't tell you who I am in another country."
"No, until we cross the border before that. I intend to proceed as safely as possible and without taking the time to reach my destination, but to do so, I need to pass near the Veos volcano."
'Hmm?' Reus leaned his neck.
"I still think so... why don't we take a bigger detour?
"When that happens, the travel distance from La Paris is too long this time. I've been working as a Spirit since just before I entered Rapali, but I want to reduce my chances of being noticed."
"Given Luviria's physical condition, should we take some risk to shorten the journey… I hope the Fire Dragon won't attack us."
Hmm? Reus tilted his neck in the opposite direction. If Reurus is not mistaken, "acquaintances” are the subject of discussion.
(Speaking of which, the last time I saw you was when I stopped by on my way to Lake Mersena. Vanille might know something about unicorns, and I'd like to meet Neddy at the same time....)
I checked the attitude of Collard and Anemone, but the difference in size seeped into their expressions.
"Er... are the dragons of Volcano Veos so dangerous?
Asking for Vaniel's name without mentioning it, Collard and Anemone look at Reurus in an incredible way.
"A monster who has lived for hundreds of years in this place where Mataroi meets his neighbor, Rapali, and Berlido? Even that Gregorian wouldn't try to get involved as much as he could, would he?
"The three countries bordering the volcano Veos have all failed in their attempts to crush it many times in the past. It's the most famous monster in the continent, isn't it?
Reurus, who was told by the two with a serious expression, whispered in his heart that he had heard such a story.
Now it's like a friend in a fight, but when I first met him, I hit him once, so I did my best. Even when the Dragon Slash was acquired and returned to battle, Reus, Eliza and Sarah were all defeated, although they were somewhat injured.
Reurus and the others fly from there as they approach the Véos volcano, which is more dangerous than the slime itself.
(Judging by Mr. Collard's reaction, has he not informed the surroundings of our relationship with Vanier? If so, would it be better to keep quiet...)
I'd like to talk to you about Unicorn, but it may be difficult to face each other.
This trip is not always a wild stay, and I plan to stop by town as often as possible to relieve Ruvillia's fatigue. So if you ever stop by the town near the Veos volcano, you'll be able to sneak out.
(Vernier won't even come into town to see us.)
A town named Madaro exists near the volcano of Veos. The Reurus has stopped by the abandoned city of Madalo, but if we could meet Vanier, it would be nearby.
(If you fly to the wilderness lodge... you'll pretend to be His Highness and let Mr. Collard escape.)
I'm worried about the future, but I think we should alert Eliza and the others first. The conversation with Collard and the others was there, and Reurus decided to look behind Eliza and the others.
"Eh? This is raw... right? Can you eat the internal organs of Epel in the first place?
"I always eat Reurus while saying it's delicious! Come on, let's try something -"
"What are you doing!? Lady, pull your hands too!
There was Sarah, who recommended the horny rabbit's guts to Ruvillia, and Anemone rushed out in a hurry.
When Reurus sighed one by one, Vanille's story continued with Anemone to stop Sarah later.
