Chapter 204: Disrupting The Script
The white-hot phosphorus glare was still burning out Hexi’s night vision when the darkness beneath the eastern stairs tore open.
Selena’s instincts screamed before her ears caught the rustle of cloth. She relied entirely on the physical conditioning Nicholas had beaten into her muscle memory in that dusty basement range.
Shift your weight forward. Never plant both heels.
A matte-black stiletto blade hissed through the air, aimed directly at her carotid artery.
Shadow materialized from the blind spot of the overturned delivery truck. He moved with the quiet grace of a veteran killer, relying on low light and distraction rather than supernatural teleportation. His strike was fast, lethal, and practiced.
Selena did not freeze.
Instead of jumping backward into an unstable footing, she leaned into the attacker’s forward momentum. She brought her reinforced combat blade up in a sharp, angled sweep, meeting the incoming stiletto with a jarring clatter of hardened carbon steel. Sparks sprayed across the gap between them.
The shock of the impact rattled up her forearm, but her base was wide, her knees bent, absorbing the kinetic shock.
"Not bad for an association secretary," Shadow hissed through his teeth, applying downward pressure to force her blade away and free his off-hand for a throat strike.
"Supervisor," Selena corrected coldly.
She twisted her wrist, rolling the edge of her blade along the flat of his stiletto to trap his forward guard, exactly as Nicholas had demonstrated on the weighted mannequins. She drove her steel-toed combat boot forward into Shadow’s exposed lead kneecap with a dull, crunching thud.
Shadow grunted in pain, his balance breaking for a fraction of a second. He recovered with vicious speed, sweeping his blade in a horizontal counter-slash aimed at her midsection. Selena snapped her torso back, the razor edge slicing clean through the outer fabric of her tactical vest without piercing the dermal layer beneath.
She was holding her ground, but against a dedicated assassin, pure defense was a countdown to a fatal mistake.
That mistake never arrived.
From the blind spot behind the smoldering debris, Nicholas closed the distance without a single audible footstep.
He didn’t announce himself. He didn’t call out. He stepped in from Shadow’s compromised flank at an oblique angle, his left hand snapping out like an iron vise to lock around Shadow’s weapon wrist. With a brutal, twisting wrench of his body weight, Nicholas popped the assassin’s radial joint out of its socket.
The stiletto clattered against the stone.
Before Shadow could draw breath to scream, Nicholas drove the hardened heel of his combat boot into the back of Shadow’s right knee, collapsing his stance entirely. In the same fluid, unbroken motion, Nicholas brought the reinforced pommel of his heavy pistol down onto the temple of the assassin with mechanical force.
Shadow collapsed onto the scorched asphalt, limp and unconscious before his body even settled into the dust.
High on the perimeter ventilation grates, the three hidden lens pods Julie had anchored blinked with synchronized emerald lights.
Julie was crouched inside the narrow intake duct, furiously typing commands into her auxiliary control pad. Her eyes were wide, reflecting the real-time bitrate metrics as the live video stream hijacked every major broadcast relay on the continent.
Across the world, the silence that had followed Malik Vance’s speech shattered into utter disbelief.
Two billion viewers—civilians huddled around glowing television sets, soldiers stationed at command posts, citizens staring into their smartphones in dark shelters—watched the impossible unfold.
There were no blinding beams of energy. There were no flying bodies or reality-shattering shockwaves. On the screens, two operatives stripped completely of supernatural powers were systematically dismantling the Master’s terrifying inner circle using nothing but tripwires, flares, cold steel, and raw tactical discipline.
The public live-chat feeds, which had been paralyzed with despair minutes earlier, began to explode into an uncontainable roar.
Kestrel_Actual: Did you see that parry?! She caught a direct assassination thrust on pure mechanical reflex!
Vanguard_Fan_09: They took down Zayx with a tripwire and a pressure strike... no powers at all!
Iron_Will: Who are these two?! They aren’t glowing! They aren’t using abilities!
Nova_Streamer: Look at their coordination! The big brute is down, the poison is burned away, and the assassin just got put to sleep in three seconds flat!
TruthSeeker_99: Malik said we were helpless without magic... he was wrong.
The narrative of inescapable despair was disintegrating in real time under the lens of Julie’s camera.
Nicholas didn’t spare a glance for the fallen assassin or the invisible audience watching from the outside world. He stepped over Shadow’s body, holstered his sidearm, and vaulted cleanly onto the edge of the grand execution stage.
The air on the platform was thick with the scent of dried blood and ozone.
Eric knelt at the center, his massive chest heaving as he strained against the anti-kinetic restraints clamped around his neck and wrists. The veins in his forehead stood out like cords, his teeth clenched in helpless agony until a shadow fell across his face.
Eric looked up, his bloodshot eyes widening in stunned recognition. "You... Nicholas? How did you..."
"Quiet," Nicholas said flatly.
He drew a high-grade mechanical cable cutter from his tactical harness. The tool was forged from hardened diamond-matrix alloy, designed to sever industrial crane cables without requiring hydraulic power.
Nicholas set the jaws against the primary locking hinge of Eric’s neck collar, braced his forearms, and applied maximum leverage.
With a sharp, metallic SNAP, the heavy suppression collar fractured and clattered to the wooden platform. He shifted immediately to the wrist bindings, severing the carbon chains with two rapid, rhythmic cuts.
Eric slumped forward onto his hands and knees, rubbing his raw, bleeding wrists, his breath rattling in his chest. "My ability... it’s still completely dead, Nicholas. The girl... she’s still reading."
"I didn’t come to restore your powers," Nicholas said, already moving down the line. "I came to get you off the chopping block."
He knelt beside Dana, slicing through the heavy clamps binding her arms to the structural frame.
Dana gasped as the pressure released, her sharp eyes locking onto Nicholas’s calm, impassive face. "The girl is in the central pavilion. She isn’t controlling it consciously, Nicholas. Malik put her in a waking hypnotic state. Every line she reads from that book enforces the reality of the dome."
"Then we stop the reading," Nicholas replied.
He turned his back on the recovering heroes and walked toward the elevated pavilion at the rear of the stage.
The glass enclosure had been shattered by the earlier shockwaves, leaving only the ornamental iron frame standing. Inside, bathed in the pale violet aura radiating from the open manuscript, sat Joan.
The young girl looked fragile, no older than ten, dressed in a simple, oversized white frock that was pristine and untouched by the dirt around her. Her hands rested flat on the yellowed parchment resting across her knees. Her eyes were wide, glassy, and completely unfocused, staring straight ahead into the empty air as her small lips moved in an endless, rhythmic whisper.
Every time a word left her mouth, the air around her shivered with low-frequency resonance.
Nicholas stepped into the pavilion, the sound of his boots on the splintered wood causing the faint atmospheric distortion to ripple.
He stopped two paces from the chair. He did not raise a weapon, nor did he yell at the child. He stood there in the eerie violet light, looking down at the open pages where the ongoing story of their helplessness was being written word by word.
Joan did not turn her head, but her whisper faltered for the briefest fraction of a second, her glassy eyes flickering toward the shadow standing before her.
