A Hitman's Guide To Becoming A Hero

Chapter 203: The Guerilla Breach

The subterranean stillness under St. Jude’s Plaza shattered as a sequence of low, concussive thuds vibrated through the foundation.

Nicholas thumbed the mechanical remote detonator with steady detachment.

Along the northern flank of the amphitheater, the non-ability thermite charges burned through the structural rebars of the grand transit colonnade in a fraction of a second. Thick, white-hot slag dissolved load-bearing iron, and two massive stone arches buckled under their own dead weight. They collapsed into the lower perimeter with a deafening roar, churning up tons of pulverized masonry, ash, and chalky plaster.

A dense, opaque dust screen billowed outward, climbing thirty feet into the stagnant air of the dome. Within seconds, the western and northern approaches were completely severed from line of sight, blinding Sniper’s elevated terrace above the municipal library.

"What was that?!" Hexi hissed from the lower stage, her fingers twitching as she spun toward the northern curtain of smoke. "A breach?"

Zayx did not wait for an order, let alone a tactical assessment.

True to Selena’s psychological breakdown, the towering brawler grinned with savage delight. The veins along his neck bulged, his massive fists curling into iron mallets. Without the presence of an active impure power, his sheer biological mass and brute bone density were still enough to crush a regular man’s ribcage with a casual backhand. He saw smoke, he heard structural collapse, and his instincts demanded he tear apart whatever crawled out of the rubble.

"Stay on the stage, idiot!" Hexi snapped, reaching to grab his shoulder.

Zayx swatted her hand away with a guttural laugh. "Keep your poison back, woman! Whoever crawled through that wall is mine to break!"

He lowered his heavy shoulders and charged straight into the blinding fog of gray dust.

His heavy combat boots pounded against the cracked asphalt, sending loose gravel skittering. Zayx pushed through the first ten yards of swirling powder, his predatory eyes searching for the silhouette of an association vanguard.

He never looked at the floor.

Three inches above the grit, stretched between a shattered concrete barrier and the rusted axle of a crushed municipal bus, hung a high-tensile tungsten wire.

Zayx’s lead shin struck the taut line at full sprint.

The wire bit deep into the leather of his boot and the meat of his leg, holding fast under two tons of engineered resistance. Zayx’s massive forward momentum worked violently against him. His lower body halted instantly while his upper torso was hurled forward, pitching him face-first toward the asphalt.

Before he could hit the flat stone, the weight of his fall triggered the kinetic pitfall Nicholas had rigged beneath the dust: a dropped sewer maintenance cover, propped on a hair-trigger pivot.

The iron plate snapped downward under Zayx’s chest, plunging his right arm and shoulder into a narrow, jagged concrete opening. The bone in his collarbone cracked with a dull, sickening snap against the reinforced rim.

"Aaargh!" Zayx roared, thrashing wildly to pull himself free, spitting gray dust and blood.

From the swirling mist directly above him, a shadow dropped without making a sound.

Nicholas landed with zero wasted motion, his boots finding purchase on the stable rim of the pit. His expression was cold, clinical, and completely devoid of emotion. He did not yell a challenge. He did not deliver a heroic declaration.

He struck.

Before Zayx could wrench his heavy frame upright, Nicholas stepped inside the giant’s guard, driving the heel of his palm directly upward into the base of Zayx’s chin. The blunt, mechanical impact snapped the brawler’s head back, slamming his teeth together and rattling his brain stem.

Zayx swung his free left fist in a wide, desperate arc that whistled through the dust.

Nicholas ducked beneath the sweep by a matter of inches, his center of gravity shifting smoothly. He drove a stiffened knuckle strike directly into the vulnerable nerve cluster beneath Zayx’s exposed armpit, paralyzing the swinging arm instantly.

With his left hand, Nicholas drew a matte-black combat blade from his hip, reversing the grip.

He did not stab for the heart or the throat—he moved with the terrifying precision of a surgeon dismantling a machine. He drove the reinforced pommel of the blade down onto the cervical vertebrae at the base of Zayx’s skull with full body leverage, followed by a vicious, close-range slash across the brawler’s primary hamstring tendons.

Zayx’s massive legs folded beneath him.

The brawler let out one final, choked gasp before Nicholas hooked an arm around his neck, applying a carotid compression hold with brutal, calculated force. Four seconds of unrelenting pressure deprived the brain of blood. Zayx’s eyes rolled back into his head, his towering frame going completely limp as he collapsed into the debris.

Nicholas released the unconscious giant, stepping over his bulk without a second glance.

From forty yards away, Hexi realized Zayx had gone silent far too quickly.

"Zayx! You brute, answer me!" she called out, backing toward the perimeter barricade.

No response came through the swirling haze.

Panic flashed across Hexi’s sharp features. Her paranoia, exactly as Selena had predicted, flared into overdrive. Even without her full impure range, she refused to fight in the open. She reached into the pressurized containers strapped across her chest, twisting the release valves with manic urgency.

"If you want to hide in the dark, you can choke in it!" Hexi shrieked.

Thick, unnatural plumes of purple, bio-engineered miasma vented violently from her canisters, sweeping forward to merge with the gray dust screen. The mist was an organic toxin, formulated with necrotic spores that liquefied respiratory lining on contact. Within seconds, the dense chemical fog formed shifting, humanoid shapes—miasma puppets designed to confuse intruders and deliver airborne poison straight into their lungs.

Through the purple haze, Hexi watched the misty silhouettes advance, waiting for the choked screams of her prey.

Instead, a bright, metallic hiss echoed from the eastern rubble.

Selena stepped out from the flank of an overturned delivery truck, wearing a compact carbon-filter respirator strapped snugly over her nose and mouth. Her eyes were sharp, calm, and locked directly onto the chemical vector pathways.

In her right hand, Selena held a military-grade, high-intensity phosphorus flare.

"The vector is organic," Selena said calmly into her collar mic. "High vapor density, flammable lipid carrier."

She struck the flare’s primer against the side of her tactical harness.

A brilliant, white-hot fountain of phosphorus fire erupted with a deafening roar, burning at over three thousand degrees.

Selena hurled the flare with a clean, overhand arc straight into the center of the advancing purple cloud.

The instant the superheated flame touched the airborne lipid spores, the miasma did not merely disperse—it ignited.

A rolling wave of golden-white fire washed through the purple fog in a sweeping chain reaction. The intense thermal shockwave incinerated the organic toxin out of the air in seconds, turning the necrotic puppets into drifting soot and harmless warm air.

The blinding flash of white light punched clean through Hexi’s dilated night vision.

"Aah! My eyes!" Hexi screamed, stumbling backward onto the stage stairs with both hands clawing at her face, completely exposed, defenseless, and blinded in the sudden glare.

Selena lowered her sidearm, aligning the front post with cold precision.

Through the clearing smoke, Nicholas emerged like a ghost, his suppressed pistol held steady at low-ready as he closed the remaining distance to the stage.
