Administrator Of A Broken World

Chapter 20: A Voice Earned, Not Given

Sponsored

The hooked wing had not reached the nearest captive when Mataon drove the broken spear into its path.

Wood struck cartilage.

TOK!

The wing folded around the shaft and kept coming.

Mataon had expected resistance. He had not expected the creature to use the spear as a handle.

It yanked him off his feet.

His shoulder hit stone. The bound cut on his upper arm flared hot, and the broken shaft slid from his fingers.

The captive knocked again.

Tok. Tok. Tok. Tok. Tok.

The ridges across the creature’s chest opened.

Every voice it had stolen answered.

Water.

Please.

Open the door.

Barni. Stay.

The sound hit the round chamber from every wall at once. Tovan dropped to one knee with both hands over his ears. Ivara’s knife scraped uselessly across the floor. Even Barni flattened, a raw snarl trapped behind his teeth.

The creature’s wing stopped half a handspan from the captive.

Emitting.

Anchored.

Mataon pushed himself up.

"Chest," he said.

His own voice returned from behind him.

"Chest."

The monster’s head tilted toward the copy.

Ivara did not need another explanation. She crossed the chamber in three steps and drove her knife into the nearest open ridge.

Dark membrane split.

The stored voices changed pitch.

The creature convulsed, and the hooked wing struck sideways instead of down. It tore through the captive’s shoulder binding and ripped a strip of leather from the wall.

The captive fell.

Tovan lunged beneath him and caught most of the weight. His injured forearm buckled, but he did not let the man’s head strike stone.

One prisoner down.

Two still hanging.

The creature pulled its four limbs fully into the chamber.

Now Mataon saw what the junction had hidden.

The body was longer than a horse but narrow through the ribs, built to flatten against ceilings. Its folded wings were lined with hooks rather than fingers. No eyes showed beneath the plates around its head. Instead, a crown of thin cartilage rings surrounded the throat and jaw, each ring trembling toward a different sound.

The System finally found enough of it to name.

[Hollow Choir Master Bat]

[Sound Understanding — Rank C]

Identification remains incomplete while the target is actively routing foreign sound.

Level eighteen.

Mataon’s current combat plan involved half a spear, one knife that was not his, a wounded scout, a clerk, a cat-dog with authority problems, and a doorway held open by a severed limb.

He had worked with worse committees.

Zahr laughed. "That was almost confident."

"It was accounting."

Almina said, "The second captive."

The Master Bat’s throat rings turned.

A small sound came from the wall.

Not a knock.

A heartbeat.

The second captive’s heartbeat.

The creature understood it.

One hooked limb shot toward the woman hanging on the right wall.

Mataon threw himself between them and raised the broken shaft. The hook cut through the wood, then stopped against the metal clasp from his ruined coat that he had wrapped around the splintered end.

The clasp bent.

The force drove him backward into the captive.

Pain flashed from his palm to his elbow.

Barni hit the limb from below. His teeth closed around the membrane Ivara had cut earlier, and his full weight dragged the joint sideways.

Tovan released the first captive to Edrin and joined him. Claws sank into the exposed seam.

The limb opened a child’s scream directly into their faces.

Tovan recoiled.

Barni did not.

His folded ears pressed tighter to his skull. He bit until the membrane tore.

The scream stopped in the middle.

The hooked limb fell limp.

The Master Bat answered by opening every ridge along its ribs.

Mataon saw the movement and knew what came next.

"Down!"

Too late.

The Choir released years of stolen sound.

A hundred breaths.

Chains dragged over stone.

Orders in languages Mataon did not know.

Someone laughing.

Someone begging.

The crack of a whip.

A woman saying a name with such tenderness that, for one instant, it hurt more than the volume.

The blast had no wind, yet it drove thought from his head.

Mataon hit the floor.

White swallowed the chamber.

Not light.

Noise.

He could not tell which direction was up. His injured hand felt distant. The stone against his cheek seemed to be shaking, or perhaps that was his skull.

Something warm touched his face.

Three taps.

Barni.

Mataon opened his eyes.

The world returned in pieces.

Ivara was on one knee, blood running from one ear. Tovan crouched over the first captive. Edrin had wrapped both arms around the blue-grey-hooded woman outside the gate and pressed his forehead to hers so neither could be lured by a voice. The two remaining captives still hung from the walls.

The Master Bat was moving.

Slowly.

Its chest membranes had collapsed after the discharge. The cartilage crown around its throat continued to tremble, but the rest of the body dragged as if the sound had emptied it.

A cost.

The creature had one too.

Mataon forced himself upright.

"What coordinates the borrowed sounds?" he asked.

The question was narrow.

The target was visible.

The information had already been partly earned.

All-Knowing Worlds answered.

[Fragmented Answer]

The Resonance Crown interprets living sound, separates meaning from noise, and directs stored patterns through the body.

Disruption will not immediately kill the target.

Expected Result:

Loss of coordinated routing.

Uncontrolled release of stored sound.

Severe risk to nearby hearing and cognition.

Information Cost: 5 Mana

Available Mana: 59/93.

Mataon looked at the rings around the creature’s throat.

Then at Ivara.

He pointed to the crown and rotated his fist sharply.

Break the coordinator.

Ivara wiped blood from her ear. Her eyes narrowed.

Tovan saw the same gesture. He pointed at himself, then at the creature’s left wing.

Hold.

Barni showed his teeth at the right.

Edrin looked from the injured woman in his arms to the two people still on the wall.

He could not fight the creature.

He could change the room.

Edrin pulled the black strip from his wrist and tied it around the severed hook beneath the gate. Then he struck the stone beside it.

Tok. Tok. Tok. Tok. Tok.

The Master Bat’s crown turned toward the familiar sequence.

Edrin struck again from the same place.

Five knocks.

A route confirmation.

A sound the creature had learned mattered.

The open ridges along its chest twitched, trying to answer with membranes that had not yet recovered.

Mataon understood Edrin’s plan one breath before it worked.

The creature dragged itself toward the gate.

Away from the captives.

Tovan attacked the left wing joint. Barni seized the right. Ivara climbed the creature’s side using its own hooked ribs as holds.

The Master Bat released a borrowed order in Orvek’s voice.

The words meant nothing to Mataon.

The tone did.

Fear disguised as command.

Barni hesitated.

Only for a fraction.

Mataon struck his own chest three times.

Real.

Barni looked at him and pulled harder.

The right wing spread.

The creature tried to climb.

Tovan’s injured arm shook. One claw tore free. The wing lifted him from the ground.

Ivara reached the throat crown.

A hook unfolded beneath her.

"Behind you!" Almina said.

Ivara could not hear her.

Mataon could.

He grabbed the shortened route cord, looped it around the broken spearhead still embedded in the wing, and pulled with both hands.

The hook’s path changed by less than a finger.

It missed Ivara’s spine.

It entered Mataon’s coat and dragged him across the floor.

The collar bit into his throat.

His vision narrowed.

Ivara drove her knife between two resonance rings.

The crown screamed.

Not the creature.

The crown itself.

Every ring spoke in a different voice.

The sound that came from the largest ring was quiet.

"Please don’t make me forget."

Ivara froze.

The Master Bat used that pause.

Its head snapped sideways. A cartilage plate caught her across the ribs and threw her from its back.

Tovan released the wing and caught her badly. They both struck the wall.

The creature turned toward the captives again.

Mataon was still caught by the coat.

Barni stood alone beneath its throat.

The Master Bat spoke in Mataon’s voice.

"Come here."

Barni’s paws shifted.

The command was perfect.

The voice was perfect.

But Mataon had never used that tone with him.

Barni’s amber eye narrowed.

Then the pale-blue one did the same.

He stepped forward.

The creature opened its jaw.

Barni leaped past it.

His claws struck the handle of Ivara’s knife, still buried in the crown.

The blade twisted.

CRK!

Three resonance rings broke together.

The Master Bat lost every direction at once.

Its limbs attacked the walls.

Its wings folded into each other.

Borrowed voices poured from the torn crown without order—questions answering screams, names colliding with commands, laughter breaking into sobs.

Mataon tore his coat free and reached the creature before it could recover.

No sword.

No proper spear.

No heroic weapon.

He had a broken piece of ashwood with a bent metal clasp wrapped around the end.

It was enough.

He drove it through the gap Barni had opened.

The shaft entered beneath the jaw and struck the damaged crown.

Ivara recovered first.

Her hand closed over his.

Tovan’s closed over hers.

Together, they pushed.

The central ring split.

The chamber went silent.

The Master Bat sagged between them.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then the gate shifted.

KRK.

The severed hook beneath it was sliding.

Edrin stopped knocking and grabbed the first captive beneath the shoulders.

"Tovan!"

This time Mataon did not care if the Choir copied him.

Tovan lifted the man. Ivara cut the second captive’s bindings. Mataon reached the third—a thin adult with short horns broken close to the scalp—and saw that the restraint around their chest had grown into the wall.

Not leather.

Root.

He placed his injured hand against it.

"Druid Extraction."

The root resisted.

It had fed on blood, sound, and stone long enough to become something between plant and restraint.

Mataon did not try to take all of it.

Only the living grip.

[Targeted Extraction Successful]

Mana Cost: 6

Hostile root cohesion reduced.

Ecological debt: Negligible.

Foreign acoustic imprint detected.

Available Mana: 53/93.

The binding softened.

Ivara cut through it.

The horned captive collapsed against Mataon, breathing but unconscious.

The gate dropped another handspan.

They moved.

Tovan carried the first man. Ivara supported the second woman. Mataon dragged the horned captive beneath the arms. Barni ran under the gate, turned, and barked once.

A real bark.

The dead Master Bat answered from behind them.

The same bark returned through its broken throat.

Weak.

But not empty.

Mataon stopped.

"Do not," Almina said.

"The pattern will decay."

"You are bleeding from three places."

"Two and a half."

"That is not a unit."

Zahr said, "It could be, if the wound is disappointing."

The gate scraped lower.

Mataon looked at the shattered resonance crown.

Sound Understanding.

Not speech.

Not language.

The ability to separate meaning from noise.

The thing he had needed since meeting Barni.

He passed the horned captive to Edrin and slid back under the gate.

Ivara caught his sleeve.

He met her eyes and pointed once at the crown, once at Barni, then at his own ear.

Her grip tightened.

Then released.

One chance.

Mataon reached the dead creature and placed his palm against the largest unbroken ring.

"Druid Extraction."

The pattern did not behave like bark, fiber, water, or mineral.

It entered him as a thousand unfinished sounds trying to become one thought.

His knees hit stone.

Mana vanished.

The gate struck the severed hook again.

KRK!

Mataon accepted.

The crown broke beneath his hand.

Every stolen voice passed through him.

A mother.

A guard.

A prisoner.

A child.

Orvek.

Ivara.

His own voice.

Then one sound rose above the rest.

A rough, furious bark from the other side of the gate.

It did not become words.

Not yet.

But for the first time, Mataon heard intention inside it.

Not command.

Not fear.

His name.

[Unstable Source Pattern Archived]

Sound Understanding — Rank C

Status: Incompatible / Unadapted

Mana Cost: 14

Available Mana: 39/93

Warning:

Do not activate before restructuring.

Hands seized his coat.

Ivara and Tovan dragged him beneath the gate as the severed hook snapped.

KRAK!

Stone slammed shut behind his boots.

Darkness swallowed the dead creature.

The borrowed voices did not stop.

They were inside Mataon now.

One of them whispered directly into his left ear in a language he had never learned.

And his mind almost understood it.
