Administrator Of A Broken World

Chapter 21: The First Word Was an Insult

Sponsored

The voice inside Mataon’s left ear finished a sentence his mind had no right to recognize.

Not the words.

The shape of them.

A warning. A name. A direction.

Then twenty other voices pushed through the same opening.

Mataon staggered into the sealed gate.

Tovan caught his shoulder before his head met stone. Ivara caught the horned prisoner before Mataon dropped them. Barni planted both front paws against Mataon’s shin and barked hard enough to hurt.

The bark arrived twice.

First as sound.

Then as meaning without language.

Pain. Anger. Stay awake.

Mataon pressed his palm over his left ear. "I’m awake."

A dead woman whispered that he was lying.

A child laughed.

Orvek begged someone to run.

None of them were present.

The archived pattern was still sorting everything it had touched, assigning meaning whether Mataon wanted it or not.

"That is the failure," Almina said.

Her voice cut through the others because it did not enter through his ears. In the corner of his vision, the divided deity stood as one tall body beneath the shared halo—Zahr’s pale half watching with interest, Almina’s dark half already irritated enough to be useful.

"The source does not distinguish interpretation from certainty," she continued. "It hears a pattern and declares what the pattern means."

Zahr tilted their shared head. "A confident mistake. Those are popular in government."

Mataon swallowed against the pain in his throat. "Not only government."

Another foreign sentence scraped through his skull.

This time it carried grief so strong that his knees nearly folded.

Barni struck his leg three times.

Real.

Mataon looked past him.

The corridor beyond the sealed gate was barely wide enough for the living. Edrin supported the blue-grey-hooded woman. Tovan had the conscious man half over one shoulder. Ivara lowered the second woman beside the wall and checked the blood at her ear with two fingers. The horned captive lay breathing between them.

Four rescued people.

Three injured companions.

One unstable skill pattern.

No safe route marked.

He needed an order of operations.

"Edrin," Mataon said. "Count everyone. Names if they can give them. Injuries first. Tovan, listen for movement. Ivara, anyone who stops breathing interrupts everything."

Ivara gave him a flat look.

"Yes," he added, "including me."

Her expression improved by an amount too small to measure.

The voices surged again.

Mataon sat before falling became a decision made for him. Barni remained against his knee.

"Can it be destroyed?" Mataon asked.

"Yes," Almina said at once.

"No," Zahr said at the same time.

Their shared mouth tightened differently on each half.

Mataon closed his eyes. "Excellent. A unanimous advisory body."

Zahr’s half smiled. "It can be destroyed."

Almina said, "But not cleanly. It has already used your memories as reference material."

"So removing it could remove something with it."

"Possibly language. Possibly faces. Possibly your ability to separate Barni from a poorly folded blanket."

Barni growled.

The unstable pattern supplied a crude meaning.

Insulted.

"That one was accurate," Mataon said.

He forced his breathing slower. The voices grew louder whenever he chased them. Softer whenever he treated them as entries rather than people.

Entries.

Not truth.

Mataon pictured a registry desk.

Incoming statements did not become facts because someone spoke them. They needed a source, a category, a confidence level, and a place for unresolved contradictions. A record without uncertainty was not accurate. It was only neat.

"We don’t preserve the source skill," he said. "We redesign the process."

Almina’s half of the shared face turned fully toward him. "Explain."

"Intake first. Sound enters without meaning attached. Then source separation. Then pattern comparison. Then an output that admits when it does not know."

Zahr asked, "You wish to make ignorance a feature?"

"I wish to stop calling guesses knowledge."

For a moment, neither adviser answered.

Almina spoke first. "Good."

The word was quiet enough that Mataon almost missed it beneath the voices.

Zahr did not.

"How generous," he murmured.

"I approved the structure."

"Of course."

"Continue speaking and I will approve your silence."

The shared body’s halo turned once.

Lines appeared in Mataon’s mind—not words, but possible channels. The Rank C pattern wanted to connect everything to everything. He began cutting routes.

Human speech from animal calls.

Living voices from stored echoes.

Known words from repeated context.

Emotional intent from literal meaning.

Certainty from probability.

The pattern resisted every division.

It had been born in a predator that survived by deciding what a sound meant before its prey could move.

Mataon refused it.

"No forced conclusion," he said.

A foreign voice became static.

"No unidentified source presented as familiar."

The dead woman’s whisper lost his mother’s warmth.

"No translation without confidence."

Pain lanced behind both eyes.

The archived pattern folded inward.

[Skill Restructuring Available]

Proposed Skill:

[Sound & Language Engineer — Rank F]

Core Functions:

- Separate living sound from stored or reflected sound.

- Identify familiar emotional intent from audible vocal patterns.

- Build limited spoken vocabulary through repetition and context.

- Display uncertainty instead of forcing false meaning.

Limitations:

- No literacy.

- No mind reading.

- Unknown languages remain partial.

- Crowds, echoes, overlapping voices, and deliberate mimicry may cause overload.

- Non-human interpretation depends on familiarity and repeated contact.

Restructuring Cost: 8 Mana

Current Mana: 39/93

Accept?

<---------------------------------------------------------->

Mataon accepted.

The pattern tightened around his hearing.

For one terrible second, every breath in the corridor became a separate person.

Tovan’s shallow inhale carried pain and restraint.

Ivara’s exhale carried impatience, concern, and the clear intention to hit Mataon if he stopped responding.

Edrin’s breathing counted the rescued prisoners.

Barni’s growl was an entire argument.

Then the noise passed through the structure Mataon had built.

Intake.

Source.

Pattern.

Confidence.

Output.

The voices fell into place.

Silence returned.

Not complete silence.

A useful one.

Mataon heard water somewhere behind the wall. Tovan’s tail brushing stone. Ivara tearing cloth. Four uneven breathing patterns from the prisoners.

And Barni.

Barni stared up at him with both ears folded flat.

Then he barked once.

The new skill hesitated.

[Source: Familiar non-human vocal pattern]

[Intent confidence: High]

[Literal vocabulary confidence: Low]

A rough male voice formed inside Mataon’s understanding. Older than he expected. Dry enough to sand wood.

"You reckless, long-legged idiot."

Mataon blinked.

Barni’s eyes widened.

"You sound older," Mataon said.

Barni barked again.

"You look worse."

Zahr laughed so loudly that the shared halo tilted.

Almina’s half tried not to smile and failed only at the corner of their shared mouth.

Mataon looked at Barni. "You understood me this entire time?"

Barni sat.

"Yes."

"And you let me keep guessing?"

"You guessed badly."

"That is not a defense."

"It entertained me."

Ivara watched Mataon argue with a barking animal.

She pointed two fingers at her eyes, then at him.

Mataon raised a hand. "I can understand him now."

Barni barked.

"He says you should have tied me to the wall before I touched the crown."

Ivara nodded immediately.

"Traitor," Mataon told him.

"Survivor."

The System chimed before he could answer.

No warmth repaired his injuries.

No light filled his body.

His arm still hurt. His throat still burned. His coat remained ruined.

But the Mana inside him had more room to move, and the channels no longer felt like a cup filled to the edge. They felt like a larger cup that was mostly empty.

"Level increase without full restoration," Mataon said.

Almina answered, "You improved. You were not rewarded with the right to ignore damage."

Zahr added, "She has been waiting to say that."

"I have been waiting for him to understand it."

The concern beneath her correction was small, quiet, and immediately hidden.

Mataon noticed anyway.

He chose not to mention it.

A faint pressure moved through his Mana channels as Almina guided his attention lower, beneath the ribs.

"Four counts inward," she said. "Hold for two. Release for six. Do not pull Mana. Let the empty channels settle first."

Mataon followed the rhythm.

The first attempt did nothing.

The second made him dizzy.

The third stopped the new skill from catching every scrape of cloth as a possible sentence.

Tovan raised one hand.

Everyone stopped.

Tik.

A distant metallic sound travelled through the wall.

Tik.

Not the Master Bat.

Not an echo.

The new skill marked the source as living movement accompanied by metal.

Barni turned toward the eastern passage and sniffed.

"How many?" Mataon asked.

Barni listened.

"Six. Maybe seven."

"Coming toward us?"

"Yes." His growl deepened. "And one of them smells like the chains in the prison."

Edrin had finished counting. He held up nine fingers, then pointed toward the passage.

Five rescuers.

Four prisoners.

Nine people who could not fight another full battle.

Mataon looked at the wounded, the unmarked corridor, and the blood they had already left behind.

Then he heard the metal sound again.

Tik.

A retrieval team keeping time.

"New rule," Mataon said. "Nobody gets separated, nobody answers a familiar voice, and nobody leaves without being counted."

Barni barked.

The translation arrived with perfect confidence.

"Finally. An intelligent order."
